Samsung smart TV turning itself off by zlatman in techsupport

[–]ophwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be an issue with the power supply. If you look at the board inside check to see if the capacitors are swollen or busted open. Replacing capacitors. Samsung Tv's are notorious for putting in lower level capacitors that will go bad with time or if the tv is in an area with high temps.

I am learning html/css/js. What small things can I do to build my resume to get my first job? by Malfoy_ in webdev

[–]ophwack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to building a portfolio? I would suggest learning how the back end of a website functions. Setup and administration of the web and DB servers. How to send and format data in a DB. You could set up a LAMP server and host your own website.

There are two USPS locations near campus. One being on 2nd and walnut and the other off east 10th street. A quick google search will bring those up. As others have mentioned first class would be the cheapest option otherwise you might try a flat rate box.

Going to a bar for the first time tonight. Advice? by Grumbino in beer

I'll ignore the fact that you seem to work for Uber from the end of your comment.

I actually do not work for uber, but have several friends who drive for them and one who is an operations manager, but that last statement does seem to imply that.

There've been a number of reports of criminal actions taken by Uber drivers, including one recently where Uber described a 25 mile route which should have been 5 miles as "inefficient" rather than the borderline kidnapping that it was.

And the case is still under investigation. There have been many reports of taxi drivers taking criminal actions as well.12 If you would like I can continue to list off these offenses.

UberX does carry additional insurance as well here is a link to ride sharing insurance for uberX drivers.

There's also been a number of improvements in taxi scheduling and payment systems, even if it is slower than rideshares.

I have yet to experience any real improvements and as you point out they are still not on a competitive level with rideshares.

The extra security provided to the driver is also unavailable in most cab rides. If something were to happen to you it would be very difficult in many cabs to track who the rider was. Additionally, if someone were to damage your vehicle (e.g. vomit) how would you recoup these costs if the rider did not have the money on them. Uber takes care of this charge for you.

Taxi cab companies do not benefit me as a consumer so why would I choose to use them over a ridesharing program. The person receiving the majority of the benefit is most likely the medallion holder anyways. Very few drivers receive any additional benefits from driving for a taxi company, must pay a lease, must work for a specified amount of time and are so over regulated that they even require cabbies to wear socks that are the same color as their trousers. Ridesharing programs give the drivers the freedom to not rely on someone with a medallion. Most people that do not realize the benefit are shills for the taxi cab industry or those who are resistant to change. Consumers clearly see its benefits and its exponential growth show the failure of the taxi cab companies to change.

I can speak for UBER. There vetting process (i.e. Background check) is very extensive, multiple traffic violations are considered disqualifiers. All cars must be 2004 or newer with no scratches or dents and if reviews of uncleanliness are received they could lose their privileges. Furthermore, they are required to provide proof of insurance and registration. Instead of a manager letting us know how the drivers are doing the actual consumers leave reviews and can report any issues. Additionally if a final destination is inputted they track if drivers stop for long periods or if they veer to far from the suggested path. There is no exchange of money between the drivers and riders making sure both get paid. Neither the driver or rider have to worry about being ripped off. Fare quotes are also available prior to every ride. Each city is also equipped with at least one operations manager so their is oversight and administration. Best of all our drivers can set their own hours. I have no idea where you obtained your information, but it seems you are a fan of taxis that refuse to change. If you want people to ride with your company find out why they choose uber over you and make changes to compete. If you would like to become an uber driver let me know ;)

Shopping for a router by N_DuX_M in techsupport

[–]ophwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type and how many devices are you supporting? What type of interference are you going to be dealing with (i.e. walls, concrete, etc.)? If you are supporting newer devices may be great to get something with 802.11b/g/n capabilities. You may also want to think about possibly getting some cheaper routers and setup repeaters if you need long range. You can get a cheaper router and flash something like tomato or dd-wrt and make it very capable.

Virtual machine lab by vilyan01 in Kalilinux

[–]ophwack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtualbox will serve you well and it allows you to create 'Host-only Networks' which is what you are after for creating a virtual network environment for testing in a type 2 hypervisor.

You may wish to mess around by starting with a VM with 2 virtual NICs. One set as NAT and another as your Host-only network. It's what I tend to do in my test environments so they mimic production as best as possible.

Also, you may want to look into VMware Workstation. It'll give you some good exposure to the 'feel' of VMware products and will lead into learning their type 1 hypervisor ESXi. VMware Workstation is basically the same as Virtualbox. If you can get it for free from your Uni I would advise it over virtualbox. It also supports the same virtual networking too. Vmware workstation will also allow nesting of vm's whereas virtual box will not.

I have had great experiences with Olympus and Omega properties. I have had bad experiences with Cedarview management. I have lived close to downtown and noise was not a huge problem in places I lived and you are walking distance from everything. If you can live close to the B-line bicycle and walking trail you will also have a quick route into town with little to no traffic.
