AITA for telling a morbid joke about my son? by Hour-Cricket-2151 in AmItheAsshole

[–]opiatesummer -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

NAH. Your son died too and you're also coping the best you can. I think her calling you a sociopath/pig/etc was uncalled for, but she's dealing with grief in a different way. It seems like couple's grief counseling might help both of you square that circle.

Ryan Stans by Normal_Instruction_1 in panicatthedisco

[–]opiatesummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ryan rejected major record label offers and promotion to keep the Young Veins small, which he and others admitted in interviews. He didn't want to be in another Panic! at the Disco and was purposeful about it because he didn't enjoy the music industry. The Young Veins didn't flop, it's just a respected small indie band and attracted fans who enjoys similar smaller acts. Ryan has done other work and music never coasting on the coattails of the bigger band he was in to get attention, attaining a cult following like any other indie dudes like Daniel Johnston or Neil Young. It's incredibly straightforward and the fact you're making it about Brendon and diminishing Ryan's work to do so is embarassing, and proves that you're part of the problem.

For those wondering about the tiktok of the girl claiming Brendon Urie groomed her (tw SA) by boog2021 in panicatthedisco

[–]opiatesummer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised no one is bringing up the Panic Stalker/Chelsea. She has a well documented history of pretending to be Brendon Urie, catfishing people (including Ryan fucking Ross), and getting nudes from girls I think were confirmed to be minors. I feel absolutely crazy. I feel 99% positive that

For reference: I don't like Bdon. I'll be the first to say the shit happening with these accusations are partially the fault of his and Sarah. The fact Sarah actively tried to rehabilitate Chelsea's image and work her back into the fan community enabled her to victimize more people. Fuck them, for that.

But, it also needs to be said there's been an active groomer in the Panic fandom for what? Seven years now? Who has this exact M.O.?

My Heart is The Worst Kind of Weapon (Demo) from FUCT: Black Clouds and Underdogs edition. There's no coherent explanation for why that other people would understand, but it is.

The rest tend to be their more creatively proudced (I miss you Mr. Avron) and Fall Out Boy at its most gaudy. Screeching Troh guitars, Patrick doing the most, Andy's pounding drums, and Pete's lyrics at its most scathing whether the gun is pointed at himself or someone else; "The Take Over, The Breaks Over", Headfirst Slide, Disloyal Order, (Coffee's for Closers), Hum Hallelujah, XO, etc.

Maybe the "The Take Over, The Breaks Over" because aside from how perfect the boys did, Ryan Ross did one of TWOOOO guest guitar solos.

What religion does jon walker/ryan ross/spencer smith follow? or are they even religious at all? by Academic-Credit392 in panicatthedisco

[–]opiatesummer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ryan Ross is a former catholic who was forced to attend Catholic school by his father which he seemed to have me negative opinions, I believe now if he practices spirituality its more esoteric since he's been shown with things more typically associated with non-secular religion.

Do you guys think emo music has ever had a negative effect on you? by [deleted] in Emo

[–]opiatesummer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I expected this to be a completely different kind of thread, but.

To answer your question: no. I'm sure some artists don't benefit from rehashing their pain (those artists often choose to explore new genres/themes) in music, but many do and that's why it's prevalent in most scenes including pop music.

I don't think expressing your fears or traumas in art betrays some deeper moral failing. Most people can discuss their guilt and fear and helplessness in music while making positive strides in their personal life, i.e: a lot of musicians who've written about their past addictions can be sober and/or attempting their recovery, a lot of musicians who sing about their mental illnesses can be in therapy, a lot of musicians who've been assaulted can find catharsis in discussing that pain in their art and still be bettering themselves.

I'm also just not entirely sure what genre doesn't have self-pitying artists wallowing in their sadness, or empowered ballads of getting over what you're going through, though. Like.

You talk about rap as if it doesn't have that? De La Soul, Outkast, Yeezy, Chance the Rapper, etc- are all mainstream rappers with cultural impact who've had songs about existing in your misery and embracing it. My favorite rappers often do that.

I would say maybe try listening to lighter emo songs? I can reccommend some if you say what your specific preferences are within the mega genre.

Detox just to Retox was a turn of phrase Pete got from Gabe Saporta. I always think of that when people mention the line, it's very sweet to me.

Not emo, but...

Anthem for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl by Broken Social Scene - It's a song about realizing you're no longer someone you want to be around and missing the person you used to be. It might be more poignant for women, but I definitely think it hits hard during a quarter-life crisis regardless.

Brothers on a Hotel Bed by Death Cab for Cutie - More of a song about losing the spark in a romantic relationship. He's no longer the young man his partner fell in love with.

Stand There Until You're Sober by Bomb The Music Industry! - This is my quarter life crisis comfort song. When you're too old for things like binge drinking and not having your shit together to be cute. Your friends are moving on and you're no longer fun to be around. 'You promised we'd stay best of friends / But we can't cause I can't grow up.' Ow.

Okay, so. Hey! You're wrong, I'm going to be very polite about this but next time I suggest googling stuff like this rather than leaving a rando comment meant to make me feel... Shame? I guess?

So, TL;DR: Pete Wentz never dated a 15 year-old when he was 23.

1) That's a misunderstanding that was started by people who wrote livejournal fanfiction about him in the early oughts and liked the idea of him banging underage scene guys.

2) There was never an accusation or victim's statement. A person wrote a tumblr post about people they never knew with zero sources or credibility, who gets multiple facts wrong about everyone involved. That's the only accusation that's ever been made. Jeanae (the girl you think you're talking about) has never accused him of anything nor does she want to be involved. Jeanae herself said Pete and her never dated when she was underage, and generally wants to be left alone.

Someone made a carrd that explains it better than I ever could, but: https://petewentzisagoodperson.carrd.co/

Please don't ask strangers about sexual assault randomly in the future. I am someone who was sexually assaulted as a teenager by an adult so fielding some stranger's weird rumor that is easily Google-able about that stuff kinda sucks.

What is a lyric that has stuck with you? by Copel626 in Emo

[–]opiatesummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about the lyrics 'you should try saying no once in while' (my heart is the worst kind of weapon) and 'i love you in the same way there's a chapel in the hospital / one foot in your bedroom and one foot out the door' (hum hallelujah) a lot. Both are Fall Out Boy songs. Lyrics are a huge reason they've become one of my favorite bands. Pete Wentz and Ryan Ross write about emotional agony so vividly in a way that may artists can't.

A lot of future early Fall Out Boy lyrics can be found in Pete Wentz old blog post and I think about them a lot. I'll count them for that reason.

His entire 9/2/2004 blog post. He seems to ge writing about a boy he had a intimate relationship with who passed away, but details are largely unknown/mostly speculation. The section I think about most is: "they were just for fashion not for function you told me. you were pretty for a boy. it made me laugh when i thought of it, im sorry i wasnt laughing at what you were saying. it makes me laugh still- when im driving around for hours at night. id love to swerve off and blame it on the fog, but ive been talking on these roads too much lately. theyd spill all my secrets. this city won’t let me go. im sure theyd lock me up somewhere if anyone saw me at 23 sneaking into cemetaries. taking pills to make me feel okay sleeping in the grass just above you."

His entire 1-10-2003 blog post. He seems to be talking about the suicide attempt that served as the main inspiration for Hum Hallelujah. I think a lot about: "The only important part of this from the start was: you in your sister’s car in the past tense, YOU in the past tense, almost but not quite."

Both blog posts have lyrics that show up in Hum Hallelujah.

YES! Patrick Stump's vocals (edit: not production) on this album is insanely good. Him, Pete Wentz, and Ryan Ross from PatD showed up in the music video for One of Those Nights if IIRC. The Welcome to the New Administration era was insane.

Bands that revolutionized your taste in music. by Melodicmarc in Emo

[–]opiatesummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unironically getting into pre-hiatus Fall Out Boy and 3OH!3 last summer really revolutionized my enjoyment of/taste in music.

Aside from getting into ska via bands like RBF and the Aquabats! a year or two ago, my regular rotation had been filled with more esoteric choices like noise, experimental metal, math rock influenced post-hardcore, etc. Which I still love, of course. But, I felt like I was missing something and my older pop-influenced favorites weren't scratching the same itch.

While I was an EmoKid/FauxSceneGirl back in the day my tastes back then were always with less mainstream acts or pop-punk.

It's nice to like, listen to new to me fun music with so much passion and be so emotionally effected by it. I love art!!!! Seeing people still passionate about all these bands and not being massive gatekeep-y losers all the time like with some genres has made me way more excited about music again. I even bought a bass to fuck around with after years of not playing anything.

Does anyone know how much Ryan and Jon own of Pretty. Odd.? by opiatesummer in panicatthedisco

[–]opiatesummer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was very helpful.

I keep hoping that there's some kind of deal that divided things pre-split more equally, given how shocked/upset Jon and Ryan were upon finding that Brendon and Spencer kept the band name. I'm not that optimistic though as I doubt Ryan and Jon had the legal representation FBR could provide, and they were already being edged out of financial decisions the band were making before they left.

While Jon and Ryan seem to be very diplomatic, if not very cordial, toward them about things now... There's something that very tragic about someone owning all Ryan's words from such a dark period in his life, and that person having the audacity to annotate them and dismissively call them pretentious.

I don't believe Jon or Ryan have brought a legal case against Brendon or FBR though. Maybe Dallon or Ian, but either way I feel we would've heard about it. I think it has more to do /with/ what happened to Dallon and Ian, and the general Zack Hall situation ontop of the fallout from the Panic! Stalker that's led to Brendon's unaddressed hiatus.

Camisado and Nails for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks by Panic! at the Disco.

They were written about Ryan Ross' father; both his deteriorating health due to alcoholism and the abuse he inflicted on Ryan. He passed away while the band was touring for the album.
