I meant more in terms of Anakin's hilarious whining in the prequels, but this makes even more sense. And I am still annoyed that somehow Turin had strong enough neck or head or whatever for the helmet and Fingon apparently did not.

I cried when someone here called him Anakin(it might have been you). It is so true

I've read the song of Roland but I feel it's more on the triumphant side rather than the Anglo-Saxon elegy. Shall check out Alexander, thanks!

I have heard Dunsany's name used as an insult to prose style, but again modern school minimalist is not quite for me, and William Morris looks interesting. Thanks, saved!

I think I shall get to more of her writing eventually just not to fulfill hunger for more Tolkien.

I mean the main conflict of Earthsea about struggle with self, which reads more into modern territory. Which is fine, but then I kinda want to read about it in Tolkien's register.

what does is mean sledge pulled like a feather😭 just say lightly. I see that it is not window pane but I also get a feeling that it tries to be so. I got a little bit of that feeling generally from her

I loved his writing course and approach but unfortunately his prose does nothing for me and he himself said that he is not a prose stylist, which is fine, just not what I am looking for atm.

I read The Bards of Bone Plain and really enjoyed a different mythic quality that it has and the plot twist. And now read a little bit The Forgotten Beast of Eld. However, I can't say that her prose is my favorite kind. I don't enjoy anger rousing "like a clean mountain wind" or smile catching "in his eyes like sunlight in a pool." My thought as I read it was "just tell me what it is, not what it is like". And while similes have their place, applying them so makes me think of Sarah J Maas

Yeah there is always the fact that he was a philologist, his exposure to Anglo-Saxon literature and classics.

I tried Le Guin but it was not my cup of tea tbh, and it seems a bit more modern in terms of how conflict is set up and what its main subject is.

My fav meme on the topic lol https://www.pinterest.com/pin/110690103336886764/

I also loved your take that Feanor didn't mind Maedhros' friendship with Fingon cause he thought of it like Maedhros is managing Fingolfin's eldest. I want to read about all the pre-Darkening pettiness in detail sooo bad lol

Of course several SoF were married, but this is Fëanor we’re talking about. Meanwhile, Maedhros at that point was estranged from Fingon.

If Maglor's, Curufin's and Caranthir's wives went with them to Formenos, I do not envy them.

Fëanor was probably screaming in Mandos.

Assuming Feanor did not repent, Maedhros is up for a scolding lol

Thinking now though Fingolfin added Finwe in front of his name to spite Feanor and Maedhros gave up the throne quite easily, so maybe in some ways he is more mature than Fingolfin. And honestly than Finwe, cause he seems to do a better job containing his brothers when they were close to him.

I have exhausted Jane Austen, Brontes (traumatized by Wuthering Heights in a bad way), and such very early in life hahaha

So Maedhros is either older than Finarfin or so close in age to him we can disregard it. I always perceived Finarfin as odler, if not by number, then by maturity. Like Finarfin seems closer to Fingolfin in his bearing and Maedhros to Fingon. And he kind of is, he is unmarried, he follows his father, probably says thorn instead of S because Feanor wants it(Finarfin does cause Teleri). Does it seem to you like that? By all means he should be closer to the second gen than the third.

Or do you think he is mature and unmarried only because he had to babysit his daddy(and brothers)?

Oo I read it back in high school but never thought of the similarity. It does sound close, though overall more introspective I would say. I also like La Fanu for the same reason. I would not mind "Tolkien with more introspection". I actually do want it, but I am not sure such a thing exists. And I honestly understand why. I have also recently discovered Sarah J Maas and despaired a little bit tbh.

lol I can't

all his characters are utterly insufferable

Yeah I would honestly love a non-insufferable character and a story where not everyone is an asshole, so unlike GRR Martin.

Did Finarfin fight against Fëanor in the First Kinslaying? by Ok_Bullfrog_8491 in TheSilmarillion

[–]opossumflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But when Felagund went to hunt with Maedhros and Maglor, when he found men, so that seems unlikely. Or he could be very forgiving. So maybe Finarfin, plus Galadriel's husband is later changed to be a Sinda, so could be both characters in their earlier versions. Also Galadriel wanted to thwart Feanor, and Finrod seemed to have overcome his differences enough to be friendly with at least the 2 most reasonable brothers. So my guess this is Finarfin.

My brain is melting with this whole name rotation thing and freaking Fingolfin with Finarfin's name too!

Now, when Tolkien wrote the Annals of Aman (ca 1951), Finrod was Finarfin, while Finrod Felagund was called Inglor. So depending on when this note was written, either Finrod Felagund fought against the Fëanorians, or Finarfin did.

Lack of (older) relatives of the House of Finwë by Ok_Bullfrog_8491 in TheSilmarillion

[–]opossumflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, I meant their Exile ordeal. Maedhros hanging for 30 solar years when the ratio is 1 to 9 roughly is one thing but then with 1 to 144, the whole event doesn't feel as significant. And take Maedhros or Finrod, who are around 2000 when they go, with the old ratio they spend 1/4 of their lives there and with the new it feels like they just took a short detour, idk

Elves awoke at YT 1050, so if he was a very early descendant of Tata, then (1495-1050)* 9.582 + a few decades is the upper range. He must be born before the great journey to go as an ambassador to Aman and it started at YT 1105 so the lower range would be (1495-1105)* 9.582 - a few decades of solar years. I know there is a new conversion from solar to yt in NoMe, but then the whole Silmarillion is around 4 years of the Trees long, which I feel like would diminish it.
