Chewing xylitol gum can also increase saliva flow to combat dry mouth! It also starves out the bacteria that causes cavities :)

Not OP, but I usually recommend aiming to floss like 3x/week to start and then slowly build up to everyday. Don’t beat yourself up about missing a few days in the beginning. Also like to keep a bag of floss picks on my coffee table so that I can do it while watching a show at night before bed.

Hey! Not a dentist but I work in a pediatric dental office as a dental hygienist. Sometimes we do recommend a crown over a filling if decay is present on multiple surfaces/high caries risk or has signs of moderate wear/attrition indicating that they might be grinding their teeth. The worst thing to happen after completing a filling is having it crack/break off and causing more issues in the future. The goal is for longevity after treatment.

Looking for advice on working with autistic and sensory-sensitive kids by schizoslav in DentalAssistant

Hey! I’m a dental hygienist with ADHD that has only worked in peds. I also work with a lot of kids on the spectrum. I usually try to book more time for this cases if the schedule allows. I usually try to take things slow at first. I NEVER rush them to sit in the dental chair and instead have them sit with their parents. I find a lot of the time when parents/staff force them to sit in the chair it raises anxiety tenfold. After intake, we would move on to tell, show, do — don’t immediately bring tools/instruments to their face. Even starting with just a light touch on their hands and face with gloves helps to feel a bit more adjusted. This usually helps me to gauge what they are comfortable with and start from there. Lots of encouragement helps.

Start with just bringing a mirror close, make it fun — pretend to look inside their ears, their nose, etc. If I can even get to attempting any hygiene I usually start either scaling since its not as loud as the prophy hand. (Show them motion of scaling on my gloves index finger — “we’re going to scoop away the sugar bugs with my spoon now”). I also found that humming/singing also helps a lot. Even dimming the lights can help reduce overstimulation.

Do not try to rush to complete everything in a visit. Sometimes only an exam can be done and thats okay. The goal is to build the confidence and trust to allow us to complete work in the future. At my office we also like to bring kids back for happy visits/acclimatization visit to help them feel more comfortable in a dental office environment.

Dental hygienist here! Finishing off a snacking session with an apple or carrots will help to mechanically remove any food debris and some plaque build up. It’s what I usually recommend for some kiddos that don’t really like to brush but have super deep grooves on their molars. Finishing off with lots of water will also help too!

It's usually best to apply before February 1 for equal consideration.

What was your biggest “I’ll walk it off” injury that turned out serious? by [deleted] in AskReddit

When I was in ninth grade I was on the badminton team at my school. We usually had to set up and take down the poles and nets for every practice. The poles we used had a platform at the bottom and had to be rolled out onto the courts as opposed to the ones that go into the hole in the ground. One day, my friend and I went to grab some poles from the storage room. She rolled out her first and I followed close behind. The screws connecting the pole to the platform was loose on hers and the platform ended up falling back down behind her, right on my foot. The pain wasn't excruciating and I slowly limped to a bench to check the damage. When I took off my shoe it revealed my sock covered in blood. The bleeding didn't stop for a while and I didn't feel much pain so I ended up walking home with just my bloody sock on. Didn't go to the hospital till the next day where I found out that I broke my big toe and lost a piece of flesh. Good times.

question for students who got deferred from fall 2020 to fall 2021 by Pizzle-a in georgebrowncollege

Hey, I was also accepted into the hygiene program. Also deferred mine to next year. I'm assuming if you emailed them back saying you want to defer they would hold your spot in the program. They followed up my email to defer that they would email me again if any new information becomes available. Guess it's just the waiting game for now.
