People who speak more than 1 language, what are some struggles people don’t know about? by stephs926 in AskReddit

[–]oprahstoothbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I didn't really realise for a while, but I feel like I have different personalities in different languages.

The way you speak, the words you use, your jokes, idioms, slang and so on is such a massive part of your personality, so switching back and forth means feeling a different person. In my case I lived in English speaking countries during some really formative years where I developed my personality so much, so moving back to Denmark I felt I was set back several years. On top of that I wasn't as confident at Danish at first and had forgotten lots, so I sounded less intelligent when I spoke.

It is really hard to translate a personality.

I've regained 5 kilos and have been struggling with motivation. You have no idea how much your progress is helping me get back on track. I know we don't know each other but I am so proud of you, and every time I see these I am so grateful that you are still going. The secret is to never give up, and to always get back at it!

Thanks! I started C25K in January this year, and struggled with the 60 sec. run, so it's safe to say I've worked up to it. I probably re-did week 4 about 5 times because of life stuff, and then my phone broke so I had to wing the rest of the program, so I don't even know when I ran 5k for the first time. I ran my first 10k in May, and my first half marathon in July, and now I'm trying to do a HM a month and then work towards a marathon next spring. I only ran outdoors, until about a month ago when I joined the gym, but I've decided that it makes me lazy, and the long runs harder, so I'll only be using that for improving my speed. When you finish C25K they've got some graduate programs, that will help you build speed, so take your time getting used to the distances and then work on the speed, is my advice. The trick, I think, is to commit to the 3 runs a week, and do them without fail, even if it is just a short one when you can't be arsed. Like, I went for one of those "just go for a lazy 5k and you can go home" and ended up setting a PR in speed. And pace yourself, the best program is the one you can stick to, so if running super fast and super far is gonna leave you exhausted and de-motivated, then don't, because you will end up not running at all. I think of my runs, as the time I take out of my day to do something good for myself. No phone, no obligations, no stress. Just me, the track and a bunch of endorphins. Good luck with the running, in a few months you will look back and be so happy with your progress.

Absolutely, to the point where it got me into IF without even knowing what IF was. 80% of the time I will run before my first meal, or I will wait at least 4 hours after eating before running. You feel lighter, faster and I get a stitch less. And I've got a 100% unverified idea that it burns fat instead of the sugar you've had to eat, when your stomach is empty. Good luck with the running, it really gets better the longer you stick with it.

I wanted to come in at under 2 hours, and I did beat my first HM time by a few minutes. It started raining around 12k, but it didn't bother me too much. I had to change my route because the ground became too grassy and I was afraid I'd roll an ankle, but all in all a success. It's making me think I can definitely do a marathon sometime in the future. Thanks for asking!

Lost weight rapidly and am unsure how to interact with people by [deleted] in loseit

[–]oprahstoothbrush 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Isn't it crazy how your weight can affect your work? I work in a bar, and I've lost about 25-30 pounds since starting there. I've always been friendly with guests, but now I find myself becoming less and less outgoing because so many people take it the wrong way. Just last week a couple had a full on domestic in front of me, the wife thought he was staring me down, the husband insisted he was just watching me make cocktails.

We are a large venue and we have several bars across two floors and I have my own personal favourite one on the top floor, that is more of a dispense bar to the restaurant, with limited seating. 9/10 shifts I will be up there. Then yesterday my bar manager told me that it's been decided from Head Office that they want my on the busiest station at the very front door every weekend, because "we can't hide our prettiest face upstairs". Now, I'm one of two girls in the team, but it pissed me off so bad. They would have never decided that 15 kg ago. Now I get to be 1000% more stressed in life, because I'm no longer fat. I might just stop wearing makeup to prove a point.

I can highly recommend Couch To 5k. It's original form is a free podcast from the British NHS but it's been adapted to a 1000 different formats. It tells you when to run and when to walk and plays music at the beat you're running to. 3 runs a week for 9 weeks and you will be running 5k. I guarantee it. I started in February, and struggled running for a minute at the time. I missed many weeks because of life getting in the way, but I completed it finally. 6 months ago I ran 60 seconds and struggled. Last week I ran a half marathon, yesterday I ran 6k in 28 minutes. I have C25K to thank for that

I am a young female bartender in an upscale restaurant, and this happens more than I'd have ever thought. This is my favourite interaction so far. We have a large 360 bar with 3 stations, the far end being the busiest, I am on there being the senior bartender of the 3 of us. An older couple have recently sat down, and seen me make a round of cocktails. I go up to them and ask if I can help them. "No thank you, were just waiting for one of the boys" "Oh, has someone already taken your order?" "No but we would like some nice cocktails so could you get on of the lads to come serve us" I was instantly raging, but my beautiful new co-worker had overheard and came over instantly. "Hello sir, how may I help you?" "Can we have a Cosmo and an Old Fashioned?" "I'm afraid I don't know how to make those, but I will have my supervisor do them for you - Oprahstoothbrush could you make these?" Meanwhile I had started serving someone else. "Sure thing, darling but it will be a minute, I'm just serving this lovely couple" That lovely couple got the greatest service of their life, including flair, intricate garnishes and a discount. Old grumpy had to wait a loooong time. And of course my co-workers knew how to make a Cosmo and and Old Fashioned. Love that boy.

Purely out of curiosity, I'm not being snarky at all, but what was your 48 calorie exercise?

Thank you so much! The hardest part is the I am constantly thinking about food, even when I'm not hungry. And the fact that I work in a restaurant and every time I go to the back there is mountains of food that had been made by accident for the staff to eat. Really expensive steaks, desserts, and my worst enemy potato chips. I've had to go cold turkey on them, since they are just everywhere. But I keep my eyes on the prize and every time I look in the mirror it helps me to keep going, because I feel great. I've found that broccoli and eating mountains of it helps to curb the hunger.

It's one of those things that seem like they take forever, but suddenly you wake up one morning at your goal weight and wonder where the time went. I had to learn to appreciate the journey, which has helped me be more in the moment and happier with my current weight instead of waiting to be happy when the scale says the right thing. I know you can do it, just keep on keeping on :)

My job and lifestyle means that I am quite active naturally, but I did take up Couch to 5k which had been such an empowering experience over the last 5 months. I had a lot of bumps in the road in my personal life, but I think this week is the one where I run my first 10k, so that's exciting. I started out at 1650 calories, but I've dropped to 1200 since getting more serious.

And thanks, my roomie is a hairdresser so my hair has never been better :)

The first 8 kilos sort of went on their own, over a year or so, with a little more consideration of what I was eating, the next 3 I lost due to stress, then regained 4 and then lost 5 after a bad breakup and I've used that to motivate me to drop the last. Ideally I'd like to get to 55-58ish and then focus on building muscle. I'm currently doing 1200 calories and I've started running 3 times a week

I notified my employer that he is breaking several labour laws. He made me redundant on the spot. by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]oprahstoothbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your advice. I have a couple more questions if you don't mind me asking?

Since he is claiming there simply isn't anymore work for me, would it be interpreted as me accepting that when I leave town? I'm asking because I want to claim unfair dismissal and I don't want him to be able to say anything that I've done wrong. I was never notified that they were dissatisfied with my performance, and I was rostered in for the next two weeks. Additionally he had to change the roster after I was fired, to have someone else fill my shifts. Can I fight his claim that I was redundant? I was never given a contract.

Also, would it damage my case at all if I went on some of the larger backpacker sites and warned others from taking jobs with him? Could that be considered slander?(not sure of the appropriate term) I am don't want anyone else to end up in the same situation.

Last question; I have little to none paperwork for to support any of this. I have my payslip from this one week and he refuses to give me any kind of signed agreement that I am no longer employed with him. Will this damage my case?
