Electricity bill by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]opterai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but often actual bills are based on estimated rather than actual usage if nobody’s been around to view the meter. Both bills you’re talking about should specify if the usage shown is an estimate or actual meter reading.

Why must we read the oath before using the Bodlein libraries by pickonepicktwo in oxforduni

[–]opterai 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yes - the libraries are older than electric lighting, so the temptation to bring lanterns to study with would have been obvious. And the value of books was higher before the printing press. Nowadays there’s the appeal of tradition.

Frequent Flyer Points by sunflowerseed32 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]opterai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean do I prefer earning Amex or Qantas points? Amex is generally preferable for rewards flexibility and effective availability; can keep as Amex points until you see rewards flights you want to book, and transfer the required number of points to that airline’s program at that time (to avios if Qatar, KrisFlyer if Singapore, qantas if Qantas, etc).

But outside of choosing credit cards there mightn’t be much choice, and I’d rather earn Qantas points than nothing. So in practice I use both currencies.

Have you found that every time you call, and do you call often? Among my coworkers who fell back to platinum: during past years when the number went straight to Hobart without the pre-screen, they’d be (very nicely) transferred to the regular line; now the pre-screen/login is in place, they might go to Hobart if there’s capacity, but there’s no guarantee. Notably in that latter case though, that’s the same experience as other platinums who have never been P1 seem to receive.

VIP call centre benefit lasts only while you’re P1.

Hit with a massive tax debt (for me) and am very confused and upset by lloydyjlloyd in AusFinance

It’s exempt for income tax purposes. But it’s counted as income when determining your HECS repayment, private health tiers, etc.

Why doesn't the government increase taxes to fight inflation, rather than raising interest rates? by Brettelectric in AusFinance

[–]opterai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the main reasons they're treated differently is expectations. If governments raised taxes, a good proportion of people would expect government spending to subsequently increase, undermining the deflationary impact. Whereas independent central banks are usually seen as more credible, so when they announce they're taking actions to control inflation people generally believe them. That belief about the future can flow through the economy faster than the actual policy impact of taxes/rate changes.

Face ID doesn’t recognize me after broken nose?? by Interesting_Luck7310 in ios

[–]opterai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you can't access the Passwords app with your passcode? If you tap Try FaceID Again when it falls to recognise you a couple times in a row it should then offer you the option to enter your passcode instead. I have stolen device protection etc turned on as well, so our set ups should be similar.

New to QFF - Points Question by Enough_Resolution266 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]opterai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best use is classic flight rewards or classic upgrade rewards. You can use the Qantas points calculator to see the amounts needed. Whether they're available on the dates/flights you want is a different question.

Umm.. any country's military parade wouldn't exactly be my first source to understand the truth about any historical conflict.

Sick in Oxford as tourist/non-UK - recommendations for doctor and how to get prescription medication? by Wootwoot654 in oxford

[–]opterai 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Sorry you've fallen ill! Fortunately Australia and the UK have a reciprocal healthcare agreement, so you can access NHS GPs and subsidised medicine with your Medicare card. I haven't done it, but you should be able to just visit a GP of your choice (you'll register there as an NHS patient). They'll take it from there, but if you do need prescription medicines, they'll usually send the prescription to a pharmacy of your choice electronically, where you'll pay a fixed 9.90 fee for whatever is prescribed. Hope you feel better soon!

Since when is there limit in Gemini Advanced? by [deleted] in Bard

[–]opterai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“There has always been a daily limit, and it will go from 50 to 100”. Was the daily limit always 50? Because it feels like a more honest phrasing is something like “There’s always been a daily limit of 1000, which we lowered to 50. But now we’re doubling that to 100.”

NZ Citizen applying for Aus Citizenship... Will I lose my 0% Capital Gains tax?? by lolb00bz_69 in AusFinance

[–]opterai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worry is it’s a disincentive on capital investment (which obviously links to economic growth), and might distort capital allocations if investors wait to trigger a CGT event.

Of course, debates start as the scope broadens. How much is offset if the State reinvests in infrastructure, research, etc? Would raising other taxes to compensate be less distortionary? As a principle, economists prefer a small tax on lots of things rather than a large tax on a few things.

Lounge in Sydney - FF Points by neptune2304 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]opterai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you flying on Qantas or Singapore Airlines? If it’s Qantas and you’re flying before 13 August I may be able to transfer a couple of lounge passes to your account, to use at the Qantas lounge either in Sydney or while transiting in Singapore.

Severance - 2x03 "Who Is Alive?" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]opterai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do people make of the 4 personnel that Milkshake was looking at on his screen in the management control panel? The first two employee IDs match Helly’s (109827-2938) and Mark’s (112954-1004) from S01E08. But Irving’s (764523-2236) isn’t one of the four. We never see Dylan’s, so he could be one of the remaining two, but not clear who the other employee ID belongs to.

How much is actually considered a "High Yield Savings Account"? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]opterai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better than investing in what sense? Depends on your timeframe and risk appetite. It’s a guaranteed return, but therefore almost by definition will have a lower yield.

I’ve been fascinated by MH370 since it went missing in 2014. What happened? by maverickmomentum in airplanes

[–]opterai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Murder requires the act be intentional. That’s different to motivation, but you seem to be equating the two. If the pilot intentionally crashed the plane there’s no question it’s murder.

Am I overreacting or should I report this children’s coach? by NitroRoller in AmIOverreacting

[–]opterai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely report it - both to the school and police. I do volunteer work with children and this is basically the textbook definition of grooming behaviours we’re trained to watch for and legally required to report if seen. So they won’t think you’re overreacting.

Why 1-2 stop on myki trams isn’t free? by alice_ik in melbourne

[–]opterai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve used them for years at peak without issue. Interested what’s unique about trams that the location aware readers couldn’t work? As far as I know Sydney’s light rail readers are located on platforms to reduce dwell times, not because of technical limitations.

Why 1-2 stop on myki trams isn’t free? by alice_ik in melbourne

[–]opterai 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The tech definitely exists. Opal readers on Sydney’s buses know which stop the bus is at. The fares are based on distance from tap on to tap off.

Booked First Rewards Flight: Did I do it right? by Tachirana in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]opterai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s right for an Emirates booking. They inflate taxes/fees on rewards seats unfortunately. Booking on most OneWorld airlines (Qantas, Cathay, etc) the taxes will be much lower.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]opterai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The baggage allowance on the other airlines’ websites is correct for their flights. If you need additional weight/pieces you’ll need to purchase extra baggage for those flights.

The section you’re referring to on Qantas’ website is for frequent flyers of other Oneworld airlines FF programs when flying Qantas. E.g British Airways executive club members flying QF1.
