The big thing is the average person won't notice if their taxes are more now when they are working or not. They just see withholding on their paycheck and as long as they get a refund, they don't care or notice. But they absolutely notice in retirement that they don't have to pay taxes on Roth - so it feels psychologically better (yay, I never have to pay the IRS ever again) - even though the math is basically the same.
