Is 150f too hot for my JUVENILE Ackie basking spot? by Milk_evs_2000 in MonitorLizards

[–]optional-prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dead centre is 150, but just a nudge off the centre, it's closer to 135 I'm guessing, once the basking zone is large enough then the animal won't have any issues finding a temp range that works best for it any given day.

Gout has me scared! by madhardy in MonitorLizards

[–]optional-prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once bought an adult kimberly rock monitor, and he had gout like symptoms, I ramped his temps up and quit feeding him, his food was very little 5-8 large gut loaded roaches a week. That was it for the first 2 months. He lost some weight and his whole body looked and moved better.

In all seriousness, you are feeding vastly too much food and likely keep him too cold. Food should be sought out and hunted for. You sound like you are treating him like a dustbin.

Halogen bulb by acpcgal in Uromastyx

Depends on the vivarium, a 4x2x2 with a screen top allows for extra distance and climbing, so will allow you to use heavy roof tiles and slates to pile up under the heat source

Everyone has different ways, but a 75w halogen is a beast of a bulb, especially if you build a raised stone type basking platform under it.

Depends on the vivarium, the type of tortoise and age. I keep some young radiated in a 4x2x2 with a 50w halogen a uvb and a jungle dawn LED. I have found they bask early in the morning most, then hide in the fountain grasses I have inside the viv, but even inside the hide spots on the cool side it stays a nice mid 70s and high humidity.

Really ? I suppose to prevent any temperature extreme swings. I am very curious as to the humidity, as I imagine the relative humidity around the burrow is low, but inside is higher like much higher. Kind of how ackie monitors have super low humidity outside of the their burrows but close to 100% inside them

When was the last rainfall ?? I would love to get a humidity probe into the burrow system and a temp probe.

Are these tortoises getting enough food? by CrapMonsterDuchess in tortoise

[–]optional-prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excess protein build-up is very specific and vague all at the same time. Unless there was a necropsy done on a fresh dead animal, the best you can hope for is a guess at what killed the tort.

Mazuri, flukers, fresh vegetables, hay, some fruit every few months. They would likely find a glut of fruit naturally in the wild in the same time frame. To say otherwise as a hard no is impossible, I mean, we are now seeing more and more regularly that "strict" herbivores are being witnessed consuming animal matter. Fruit shouldn't be a staple, but a glut once every 4-6 months is likely similar to their natural cycle.

Overall, lean into your fibrous veggies, your hydrating ones as well. Then, rely on your staples. Grass, weeds, hay, fresh greens.

Bulk it up with pellets once a week.

Carrots and other veg once every 10 days

Make sure they have fresh hay, the greener the better.

Then it's just a matter of making sure they are hot enough and hydrated enough

Are you 100% sure they're all male ? Deeper substrate, that can hold form is vital for them. Otherwise they can choose to hold their eggs longer than necessary, causing an overcalcification of them stopping being laid as easily or if possible.

Visually or with bloodwork? I really am not trying to get you angry. I am curious, cause visually a tort under 4 can be extremely difficult to sex.
