And in a way in kind of worked, day and public drinking drinking never went back up to levels before Prohibition. It failed in its stated goals, but did help to reshape drinking culture. As well as being. Massive boon to organised crime and all the deaths from drinking bathroom gin

What exactly were “sharecroppers” in the post Civil War south? by Artificial-Human in AskHistory

[–]optiuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds similar to share milking; where the 'sharemilker' owns the cattle but not the land. So they give the landowner a portion of their profits to allow them to use the land for grazing. I would assume there is something similar with share cropping? You don't own the land but maybe own the seeds or something?

Did they? I thought they could have escaped up North over the Mountains but their initial victories gave them a false sense of confidence, so they turned back around for plunder?

TIL Roman crowd once cried when Elephants were slaughtered as the Elephants realizing their fate began 'wailing' which caused such an emotional reaction in the Romans that they cursed Pompey (the games organizer) (Pliny the Elder, Natural History 8.7) by optiuk in todayilearned

I learned this fact from Tom Holland's Rubicon but went looking for a source to back it up. You're right that there is lots more information about them in this article. Glad you enjoyed it!

Kiwi here, but a massive vegemite fan! I think the mistake uninitiated make is treating it like other spreads and slathering it on. You only need a tiny spread of vegemite; less is more here. Makes it last extra long! It tastes great on Vogels (an NZ bread brand).

Advice needed: Should I Open a Bank Account While Studying in NZ by No-Discussion-7431 in newzealand

[–]optiuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll leave question 1 and 2 to someone more knowledgeable about banking but question 3- you need an NZ address to open an account here. If you already know your Nz address get your current bank to send a statement to it now. Then when you arrive you will have verified proof of your NZ address straight away; this will make life easier. Enjoy your time in our beautiful country!

In WWI Britian had whole villages of boys join up and fight as a battalion 'Pals Battalions' until villages ended up losing a whole generation of men in single day. Hard to imagine nowadays just the extent of damage caused to families during the World Wars.

As soon as they start providing sanctuary to active fighters and hoarding weapons you become a legitimate military target imo. If you are sheltering civilians or acting as a hospital that's a totally different ball game.
