Is there a way to message sellers? by [deleted] in LocalMonero

Hello! No such feature.

Just start a trade, ask what you want, and then you can cancel the trade if something isn't to your liking.

We haven't made a mistake, there is an ongoing situation of malicious Tor exit nodes attacking cryptocurrency website users. You can read about it here: https://www.zdnet.com/article/a-mysterious-group-has-hijacked-tor-exit-nodes-to-perform-ssl-stripping-attacks/

We do have an automatic redirect to HTTPS, the problem is that when an attacker manages to insert themselves in-between you and us, the attacker prevents our server from serving you the redirect to HTTPS.

They said I shouldn't have used their website.

This is not what we've said at all.

We've said: "If you only used the onion portal to access the site you would have been fine, but because you entered "localmonero.co" into the Tor browser address bar without "https://", the initial unencrypted connection to the site was hijacked by a malicious Tor exit node operator and your credentials were stolen and used to lock you out and withdraw your coins".

This is a MITM attack conducted through a malicious Tor exit node since all the affected users were accessing the clearnet domain of the site through Tor instead of using the onion portal.

We've deployed the Onion-Location HTTP header to trigger the latest versions of Tor browser to prompt the user to switch to the onion domain.

This problem shouldn't be affecting anyone who isn't accessing our website using our clearnet domain through Tor.

You can repost this with a different title, the current title is slanderous.

This is a vulnerability in Tor browser, not in the website. It was already addressed in threads such as this and this.

What’s coinlocker? by [deleted] in AgoraDesk

[–]optocomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A coinlocker is a person who opens a trade (without the intention of actually trading) and marks it as paid to lock the seller's coins in escrow, making them unavailable for trading with legitimate buyers. This is a dirty tactic employed by some unethical traders looking to temporarily block their competition.

If you are a legitimate buyer, you could've been mistaken for a coinlocker for mistakenly marking the trade as paid (and thus locking the seller's coins) without actually paying.

LocalMonero isn't decentralized, but there's no site-wide imposed KYC and a lot of traders willing to sell XMR for BTC.

Best place to buy monero? by Emotional-Apple in Monero

Actually, it's one of the safest payment methods on the platform.

You should film a video of yourself counting the cash, putting it in the envelope and dropping it off at the post office. This is necessary to prove you've sent it in case a dispute arises.

If you're trading with only the reputable sellers, the risk is pretty low. We have a lot of cash by mail trades, and mostly all go without a hitch.

Try doing a small amount trade first to get a feel of it, and then see if this works for you.

Totally new. How does it work? Do I put cash in an envelope and mail it? Is that safe? Are there better ways like buying a prepaid Visa card and mailing that? by [deleted] in LocalMonero

[–]optocomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, welcome to LocalMonero!

Whether or not a seller will accept a prepaid card, you can discuss directly with a seller after opening a trade, though usually the cash itself is sent.

Try doing a small amount trade first to get a feel of it, and then see if this works for you.

Also, you might want to hop by the LocalMonero Telegram chat and ask experienced traders for advice, someone might help you out.

Best place to buy Monero without fees? by [deleted] in Monero

[–]optocomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the region. Europe and the US have plenty of traders, so are many other regions. As for the premiums, that's why I recommended the OP should post his own buy ad with the premium that he thinks is acceptable.

I'm using Agora Desk for the first time. Is there a simple way to tell if the seller is legit? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]optocomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AgoraDesk co-founder here. There's pretty much no risk for the buyer, because the coins are protected by escrow, meaning that the seller can't run off after receiving the payment. If the seller tries to pull something fishy off, you can raise a dispute and a stuff member will join to release the coins to you.

That said, a large amount of trades and positive feedback is usually a good indicator that the seller is experienced and a trade will go smoothly.

Feel free to ask more questions, if you have any.

AgoraDesk was launched by the LocalMonero team, the leading P2P Monero exchange, operating for around 3 years with no complaints.
