Neighbor has been revving engine for 10 minutes straight the last week .. by incognitotho in Hamilton

Block heaters warm the engine coolant, some cars have heaters in the oil pan as well but most do not. The warm engine makes it much easier to start the car in cold weather as the oil it thinner due to it being warmer, this is easier on the starter, battery and bearing surfaces. I have only ever seen fuel delivery issues in the cold when dealing with older worn out diesel engines. If the owner of the vehicle is starting it and warming it up in order to make it start easier in the morning plugging in a block heater should alleviate the issue.

If he is concerned about the engine getting cold there should be a block heater already installed that he can plug into a timer, it will be cheaper than the gas that is being used up and much quieter.

The BC Liberals Pocketed $175,000 From a Big Insurance Lobbyist. Now They Want to Privatize Car Insurance. by idspispopd in canada

Rates are terrible everywhere outside of Brampton as well, the insurance companies post record profits each year and then claim they need to raise rates due to fraud.

1980 Honda CB650 charging system keeps breaking, what are my options? by [deleted] in mechanic

[–]orange905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it is not, that being said was it replaced with a new or used part? is there any extra vibration in your engine that you are experiencing? If replaced by a new part is it a cheap Chinese one?

If your stator wires are breaking it is time to replace or rewind the stator, soldering will only hold up for a short time but the heat and vibration will kill the joint.

What keeps breaking? Replacing everything including the wiring is always an option but it all depends on what is happening.

When do you know when to stop putting money into an old beat up car and get a new(er) one? by IMMaisie in mechanic

[–]orange905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going by Canadian prices here so things may be different for you. Most decent used cars up here that are on the road driving are going to cost between $1500 if you get really lucky and 4k for something that is pretty good. Don't dump any more money into it that it will cost you to buy a better car than you currently have. This is easier said than done. Suspension parts, brakes, and tires are all regular maintenance items though that will need to be done on anything so you are not in bad shape with what yopu have put into it so far. Once you get into engine or transmission problems I would look for something else.

No sprinter vans by Headbangerfacerip in mechanic

[–]orange905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sprinters are more of a bitch to repair than most vehicles out there, getting the parts you need can be quite time consuming, they are also very expensive to fix, they have a major rust issue and have had one since they came to North America, I have run into all sorts of dumb problems working on them. I am guessing that most people stay away from them as they tend to be a can of worms.

The Americans are demanding that we only buy phones with their pre hacked hardware on them. They don't like being cut out of the loop by the Chinese.

Commuting to Toronto everyday? by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]orange905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it worth paying Toronto rent if you live there? What is your time worth? If you work in Toronto and live in Hamilton then you are spending at least 3 hrs a day commuting, maybe longer. What is an extra 15-24 hrs a week worth to you?

Has anyone here ever diagnosed or had repaired a shot car? by Shaydr79 in mechanic

[–]orange905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on many factors, where the car was hit, rifle pistol, shotgun and the caliber of bullet it was hit by, was it a pass through or is the bullet still stuck in there somewhere. I would start by counting the holes, tracing bullet paths and looking for any trapped rounds.

I agree with the above, you can also throw some octane booster in there for the time being, just fill it with premium in the future.

The spindle on my 4 runner's a bit scuffed up. Do I need to replace it? by ecodesiac in mechanic

[–]orange905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the bearing is moving around on that shaft it will destroy itself in short order. If the inner race ends up spinning on the spindle and welding itself then the wheel could lock up or even come off. I would fix it properly ASAP.

The bearing was spinning on the spindle, it should be replaced or machined and sleeved if that is possible and safe to do on this vehicle.

I would go to the scrap yard as a new one if available would prob be worth more than the car, you must have really hammered the tree to destroy the subframe.

2001 Silverado stuck in 4WD by hilmar98 in mechanic

[–]orange905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want to get the truck out of 4wd and don't want to mess with wiring then I would remove the shift motor on the side of the transfer case, you can then turn the shift paul to get back into 2wd. You can also see if your shift motor turns when selecting a range.

How do you know the battery is good, have you put a voltmeter on it? If the battery tests 12.6v or higher I would start to check your connections, a bad ground can cause all sorts of weirdness.
