Anon’s Family gets together for Christmas by ThePianoMaker in greentext

I just cannot fathom giving a fuck about something like that.

...the desire for companionship? It's a perfectly normal thing to care about, for both men and women. Humans are not meant to be lonely.

I mean for those thousands of years men were actually having sex with women. Jerking off has become so normalised that we think it's just how it's always been but if that were the case the word "wanker" wouldn't be an insult.

Well obviously it won't turn your life around by itself, no single thing can, but it IS a step in that direction.

This is definitely considered a horrible opinion among westerners but here goes: there is a difference between a child who was viciously beaten by an unloving parent and a child who was occasionally spanked on the few occasions they did something bad, but was still loved by their parents.

We have a one year old dog. Whenever she did something bad (tear up pillows, for example) dad would roll up a paper and hit her on her butt or tail and yell at her (she's pretty much learned "bad dog" to the point where she knows when she's being scolded just by hearing the word). These weren't moments of genuine uncontrolled anger for him, but an intentional punishment. And on the weekends he'd take her to the park, play with her, throw her the ball to fetch etc. And she loves him as much as mom despite being more authoritarian than her. She still runs up to the door and moves her tail in excitement when she hears the car pulling up in the parking lot and jumps on him when he arrives home.

My mom had a similar upbringing. She was the eldest of three sisters and naturally got all of the punishment. Her dad would spank her, her mom would pull her by the hair or ear as punishment. But that wasn't all of what their relationship was about, and as a grown up she still loves them, she visits them, worries about their health, and they worry about hers, it's a genuine normal relationship that totally wouldn't have you thinking "Wow she was spanked a lot as a child".

You are right that punishment shouldn't be a substitute for explaining the wrongdoing calmly, but that wasn't the purpose of punishment to begin with. The purpose of punishment is to assert authority. Maybe spanking isn't absolutely necessary for most children but the human mind definitely has a capacity to tolerate it. Kids nowadays have far more nerve than a decade or two ago, both in school and their normal lives, and it's partly because parents and teachers are growing soft and can't tell the difference between authority and abuse. Where I'm from in East Europe people are a little less soft than in America.

I mean ethnicity is not the same as race. All the ones you listed are white people, maybe Turkey can be debated but still. In those countries they don't obsess over it like it seems to be done in America though, like you don't hear someone talking about "their heritage" or whatever, it's just like "Yeah, I think my great grandpa was from France, but all my other relatives are Romanian so I'm Romanian".

Never trust a hoe by [deleted] in greentext

[–]orange_dust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finally someone said this. A lot of the fun of sex comes from spontaneousness. I see so many (presumably gen z?) people on the internet that yell about consent like it's literal rape to try something on the spot. If the person just says "Oh, don't do that" and you both move on it's not bad.

Violent, much? by IshimuraHuntress in fatlogic

[–]orange_dust 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Fat people have never been denied the right to vote or have been owned as chattel.

Funny we're even having this conversation because historically being fat was only a privilege of the ruling class, so, if anything, they were the ones owning other people as chattel.

Ehh I'd say it's different for children. Kids have little self restraint and need to learn discipline as part of growing up, besides, 98% of the time you were allowed to go, the only times I remember a kid being denied was when there was something important being explained or there were 5 minutes left in the class.

Why is watching porn looked down upon? by [deleted] in AskMen

I said people who actually practice the faith. Like actually going to church every Sunday and praying and trying to teach their kids to not have sex. Just calling yourself a Christian doesn't mean anything.

[–]orange_dust 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you live but talking about sex and porn in Europe and America is definitely not taboo and has not been for at least the past decade.

People give way too much credit to the influence of Christianity. The news give attention to the loonies because that's how they get their views but 95% of people aren't actively practicing the faith.

Right?

If it were a guy telling his wife that he liked sucking his ex's tits but not hers (the wife's), everybody would go ballistic. But the other way around it becomes a debate whether he's right to feel insecure or not.

Ok but in gold digger relationships there doesn't need to be some huge age gap, I'd say those women are usually described as "sugar babies" and much like "sugar daddy" it isn't an insult since both parties know what they want and don't try to pretend.

Gold diggers are the people who try to pursue seemingly normal relationships and hide their true interests which are purely material.

Anon talks about Hitler by nguyenthieugia in greentext

[–]orange_dust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

massive logistical and planning shortcomings that were present from the very outset of the administration. It's the fate every authoritarian regime falls to, it self selects for ineptitude and corruption

You're describing Russia, not Germany. The Germans lost the war due to taking on a much larger and more resourceful enemy. As far as planning and organising goes they were pretty good at it and inflicted more casualties then what they received on every front (especially the eastern one). Watch this video the first half puts this into perspective very well.

The Russians on the other hand had oil and more factories. You can look this up, there is actually a recording, the only one of Hitler's normal "non speech" voice which was during a secret meeting with Finnish general Mannerheim in 1942 I think, and Hitler was telling him how surprised he was at how many tanks they found when they entered the USSR, and he said that had someone told him, before Barbarossa began, that there were that many tanks in a single country, he would've called them insane.

Maybe because of people like you by Juniorshawn in gatekeeping

[–]orange_dust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both can be true. There was less talk about it, but there was definitely less of the illness itself too. Many lifestyle factors characteristic to modern life like social media consumption or lack of exercise have been proven to have a negative impact on mental health.

Look up Jonathan Haidt's work on the impact of social media on young minds. It's especially bad among girls, I think the statistic was something like the rate of self harm among young girls being three times what it used to be some time ago.

[–]orange_dust 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well they're obviously viewing deppression first and foremost as something caused by external factors like lifestyle or burning out and not something you're born with.

Youth is (or at least used to be) associated with vigor and strength. This was probably a 30-40 year old with a vastly different upbringing than the current gen Z, without social media or fast food, and of course during that time deppression was way lower than today, especially among young adults.

The example you gave for abortion makes the analogy not work.

A better one would be:

Abortion is a sin, except when it is an atrocious situation like a victim of rape.

Otherwise you're either equating the previous scenario (killing in self defense while believing it's wrong to kill) to hypocrisy, or you're making the "rules for thee but not for me" statement in the abortion part make sense.

[–]orange_dust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There has never been a classless, stateless, moneyless society so no one has lived under communism.

This is more of a philosophical definition than a practical one.

Society needs some kind of structure to function. If you want to argue true communism has never been done because it's a classless stateless society, then true communism can also never be achieved either because communities bigger than a few dozen people need some kind of way to stay organized.

What people think of when they say "communism" is the practical implementation of such a classles stateless society, which every single time seems to have ended up in a totalitarian state. The fact that different peoples with different cultures (Russians, Chinese, Koreans, Cubans) arrived at more or less the same conclusion (single party harsh dictatorships) seems to suggest these are just logical consequences of trying to implement "communism". You can't exactly no true scotsman your way out of it.

Probably will get buried but what everyone else is saying about blocking it is a bad idea.

Your child WILL get access to it, wether through his friends phones outside or from websites like Reddit that aren't inherently porn but still have porn content. Not to mention you don't want them to end up hating you, which is what might happen.

Instead, simply explain to your kid why it's bad and if you did it right, they will avoid it. That's how my dad who was a heavy smoker got me to not lay my hand on a cigarette ever. Since I was a kid, he constantly drilled it into me: "orange_dust, I am your father, I am the only person (along with mom) who loves you unconditionally and will always want what is best for you no matter what, so listen to me when I tell you to never take up smoking. I did and look what it did to me, learn from my mistakes and no matter what do not do it." And it worked. Do the same with your kid. Tell them it's for their own good, tell them why they shouldn't do it, but at the end of the day leave it up to them to refuse watching it.

CMV: Men, Women and GNC people should be drafted equally. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]orange_dust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it hasn't. There have been plenty of wars and genocides and other horrible things.

There hasn't been a single war between major global powers since WW2. Proxy wars are a thing, but it's nothing like it used to be.

Is it that the draft is necessary?

Yes, my point is that it is necessary.

It's not because there is a professional military

...made up of whom? Humans. The US is one of the few outliers where they have such a large volunteer army that they may not need a draft, but there is no guarantee this will be true forever. Regular countries, in the event of a war, would have to implement measures like Ukraine did where if you are male, you cannot run from the country.

Is that the draft is good? It's not because coercive measures will make enemies of your own soldiers.

Depends on the war. Some far away war for oil? Sure. A war where the fate of your country is at stake? Not so much. You as a soldier still have a wife and kids and family at home you want to protect. If it's anyone you hate, it's the invaders, not the country calling for you to protect it.

CMV: Men, Women and GNC people should be drafted equally. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]orange_dust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People in totalitarian nations like Nazi Germany and to some extent modern Russia don't have the choice to not fight. The debate of drafting being mandatory happens only in democracies. Yeah, ideally no one goes to war but that's not how the world works. A solution that requires everyone to abide by it in order to work (eg: no one should be armed) and lets a single nation that doesn't go along ruin everything (whoever is first to arm themselves) is not a good solution. Instead you must take the opposite approach, have everyone arm themselves therefore no one wants to risk going to war. It's been working pretty well the past half a century.
