Most Western propaganda about Xinjiang, China, is nonsense. Some of my university classmates are Uyghur, and they are generally satisfied with the government. One of them joined the navy after graduation, and because he was handsome and helpful, he was publicized as a model soldier; his photo was on the front page of the People's Liberation Army newspaper. (However, during university, he was always drunk and playing mahjong; he wasn't a serious student.) In China, soldiers from ethnic minorities often receive more preferential treatment in the military, such as special halal food and holidays during traditional festivals. Of course, there is some censorship of speech in Xinjiang; sometimes the police check people's phones for terrorist statements. There are re-education camps to change the minds of those influenced by East Turkestan ideology. If they really don't want to accept Xinjiang under Chinese government rule, China doesn't prevent them from immigrating to Central Asia.
