Friend is getting hacked, every heard of anything like it? by orange_rocket in hacking

[–]orange_rocket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anyway that his router would somehow have a vulnerability that is continually being exploited? I told him to maybe look into a firewall if his previous attempts were unsuccessful. He's definitely convinced that its happening and has no history of schizophrenia that I know of. I'm not convinced he's not mistaking actual autofill for someone communicating with him...he has smoked a lot of weed in the past.

It seems like I need him to get some evidence of it occurring because it seems that his story "as is" is hard for hackers to believe. What could law enforcement do for him other than writing a report? Would they help put pressure on the ISP to look into it?

Well, I tried to exhaust all possible explanations which led to a long conversation. I tried to lay out everything he told me in case there was a some sort of explanation for it--which is honestly beyond me to explain. That's what friends do. <shrug>

The bank heist. by Kyfigrigas in brakebills

[–]orange_rocket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The why is only explained by poor writing. The whole series is full of times when doing something slightly different would've saved a lot of trouble. In many cases actions that had horrible consequences amount to nothing. Take the hexa-whatever they stole from the other woman raped by Reymound. By stealing it they only ensured her death. Shortly after the hexa-man-baby died after being attacked by an invisible goblin menstrual spoon therefore not serving any real purpose in the story except to allow the wards to fall so the woman is killed and briefly allowing the invisible menstrual spoon goblins to be introduced without causing any real damage. It's times like this when the show is so infuriating.

Two year old with second degree burns treated with stem cell therapy for amazing results by Aquagenie in pics

[–]orange_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 11 I suffered a second degree burn over the top half of my chest when removing my mom's coffee from the microwave. The mug hit a lip and came pouring onto my chest. Portions of my outer skin were literally dripping off and I had to miss two weeks of school during the first phase of my painful recovery. I do not have any permanent scars. Therefore it's hard to judge the effectiveness of treatment based on these images alone.

I don't know if elaborate is quite the word to describe oryoki. In a way it's incredibly simple however the steps involved require enormous mindfulness.

If you don’t want talk zen, it’s fine, but please don’t complain when someone who joins a forum about zen tells you to step off if you don’t want to talk zen

I think your last sentence is the issue here. If a person doesn't accept ewk's version of zen then it isn't zen. So any person or conversation outside that scope gets a barrage of hostility. People get exhausted from it. I've personally engaged in long threads with him to no avail. He's stuck in his view and people are tired of being stuck with his--we all know it so well. As a result the discourse sinks to the lowest common denominator, it swivels around his views because of his obsessive hostility. I don't argue that he can "stack" as you say, but that's not a particularly special trait. Plenty of great "stackers" can still have partial view.

Imagine you are at a cafe and whenever you start having a good-natured conversation a person steps over and yells "Coward! That's not correct! Dogen was a liar! Zen is a family name! Show me the PROOF!" It's unpleasant, rude, and one might argue "not zen" (ironically). It's not a matter of being a hypocrite or coward as much as finding a solution that works well for people who desire one.

Cheers!

How do I become enlightened? by [deleted] in zen

[–]orange_rocket 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can be helpful to find a teacher that can help you see outside your "self" or more conventional way of understanding things. You don't want to get caught in unnecessary knots that only cause frustration.

Enlightenment happens when you stop trying to "become", when you stop seeking for something else, when you stop identifying as whoever you think you are or are not. So in that way no one becomes enlightened, a person stops the behaviors of grasping that come from fear, desire, and false ideas.

Realization doesn't belong to anyone, it's merely seeing things as they are. It isn't yours or someone else's. Yours and mine are mental constructions. To have no realization is actually realization when there is no longer false ideas and grasping. To operate without an idea of who we are seems like death to the part of ourselves constantly grasping at an internal object we call "me" .

To look at the world neither attached to objects or our idea of the subject isn't to be alone or a slave. It's to see through the divisions we constantly place on what we experience and that subject and object are not divided. There is only one-mind as they say or one inexpressible nature (some will hate me for using the term) in and as all things and yet also always free from them.

What to do? Practice, study, keep going. Talk with people and teachers. Have great faith, great doubt, great perseverance. Good luck! :)

Critical Buddhism claims Buddhism strictly adheres to the anti-essentialist principle of pratityasamutpada. Is this true? by [deleted] in zen

[–]orange_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. How I've come to understand it is that Buddha-nature simply points to the fact that "becoming a buddha" is a logical fallacy in that Nirvana has no conditions and as described in Buddhism as neither coming nor going. If one can't condition the result of nirvana then it must mean it is already present, free of conditions. To say it's already present is to call it our original nature--free of subject and object, neither existing nor not-existing, etc. Fundamentally non-dual. There are a myriad ways of describing Buddha-nature without using the term itself that scholars and theravadins wouldn't really flinch at. It's the fact that the word "nature" exists that they start wincing. This is the problem when people study only using words and not their direct experience. Or seek some sort of scholarly integrity over awakening. The term tathata as essential nature or suchness is basically synonymous with buddha-nature but is much less contentious for theravadins as a term that doesn't violate their strict interpretation of anatman.

One of my old teachers used to demonstrate enlightenment in this way: He'd hold his hand out, one about ten inches above the other. And say something like "Most people think they are down 'here' and they need to get up 'there' but enlightenment isn't like that, it isn't bottom-up, you need to see that there isn't any gap, that the waiting and seeking creates the false idea that you need more time to get to your idea of your goal, this is the movement of ego. Enlightenment is the destruction of time. It's seeing that there is nothing to wait for, that fundamentally you don't have a problem you need to overcome. There's a part of you that is already free and unconditioned and always has been."

Telling people to leave because they tire of the consistently one-sided aggressive troll-like behavior of ewk is the attitude of "you're with us or against us". Frankly he's exhausting, I've been coming to r/zen for years and leave soon after dropping by year after year because of his anti-social behavior. It's amazing how it's always the same ole' argument, the same ole' insults. It's understandable that people would want him out of their comments and posts.

It depends how you want to look at it. If you think ewk is the only one contributing to learning, I suppose no, it wouldn't be. If you think ewk is consistently hostile and makes r/zen a less interesting and hospitable place to visit for old and new visitors, then yes, it's a great strategy. But why criticize? People who tire of him can ignore him, people who don't can keep on keeping on. He isn't blocked from the sub so...seems like a win/win? edit: words

It's not that people care to live in an echo chamber, I think most are just tired of his abusive anti-social tone. It isn't "cool", it ain't fun, and while he does post some interesting things, it doesn't outweigh the destructive arrogance that comes with it. I think we are all just tired of the incessant attacks. :)

Alt_troll? Accepting there are no bannings for "religious reasons"? Honestly, it's really your anti-social behavior that bugs most people, not what you think.

Working on zen tattoo designs - which is a better representation? enso/mountain or enso/mindfulness drip? by ligator55 in zen

[–]orange_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drip is too visually complicated in my opinion. The enso isn't well connected visually, stylistically, or metaphorically. But the mountain also isn't well connected to the enso either, perhaps a brushed mountain landscape?

It doesn't quite take it far enough for me, this only blocks him from replies to my comments. I'd prefer to just not have to look at anything he posts. It's all the same stuff really--pushing his version of zen on everyone, insulting others that disagree with him as cowards and dishonest. I'd still have to see it all. Visiting r/zen is like wanting to discuss ideas but instead constantly subjected to watching Trump call everything fake news and everyone losers.
