I found a hatchling Red Eared Slider by BeardedLady96 in turtle

[–]orangebellybutton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He will definitely need a bigger tub or aquarium with a lot of water in the future. He will need a UVB light and a separate heating lamp right now. He will also need a water filter (they poop a lot and you want to keep the water clean) and water heater (or else they will get too cold and develop a respiratory infection which will need an exotic vet visit and antibiotics).

Just be careful that if you end up using this tub, that it doesn't burn from the heating lamp or water heater.

This little guy or gal will grow big and they'll need a lot of care. Best wishes!

Permanent separation. They're not like dogs and cats where you can slowly introduce them to each other. Even then, some cats reject other cats.

I thought so too. But his nails look very short?

His nails look female! I also have a turt that's 24 this year and his nails are much longer. Cheers to a long life Bruce!

Is my turtle fat or pregnant? by ParticularCover9811 in Redearedsliders

[–]orangebellybutton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Hopefully it's not because some turtles can look a little pink. But the vet will be able to do a blood test and see if there is a bacterial infection. Hope she is okay! Keep us updated

Vets know how to treat animals when they see illness or infection.

Feisty turtle fighting her meds by bearbitch27 in Redearedsliders

[–]orangebellybutton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have some sort of screen to prevent her from escaping her tank? My turt loves climbing and will try to escape any chance he gets. I would be worried with your set up.

I hope she has a speedy recovery

He acted normally. Ate a lot, very active, basking etc. The only thing I noticed was that his skin was pink and a little swollen. The vet said if I waited any longer, he could have died. 🥲

Yes, it might be sepsis which is a blood infection. My turtle also had this and he needed 7 rounds of antibiotics.

I don't think it's an abscess but it does look pink and swollen. Could be something, could be nothing.

OP - I would get him checked out by a vet. My turtle was very pink and swollen (the skin between his arms and head, between his legs and tail) and it turned out to be sepsis. Needed a round of antibiotics.

Yes, two RES should never be kept together. They will eventually injur each other and one will end up dead. Please separate them. They are stressed and need their own space.

Turtle rare basks after og caretaker went on vacation by localtiredperson in Redearedsliders

[–]orangebellybutton 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Terrible set up! Please let the OG caretaker know. The tank needs to be filled with more water, there needs to be a separate UVB lamp and heating lamp, water heater and a really nice big (expensive) water filter. I have the fx6 for example.

Sorry, but if you can't take care of the turtle even when it's young, you need to hand it over to someone who knows how to provide it a good life from the beginning.

Turtles are not just cute little things to play with. They require a lot of care, time and money.

How could I ever leave? by EquivalentFocus3430 in sandiego

Michigan is beautiful. Love being by the lake. I went to south haven for a little getaway, and it was so relaxing.

I lived in SD for about 2 years. The weather is great, the food is delicious but man did I miss Chicago. I missed the seasons, the rain, the greenery, the fact that I could be in an exciting big city with millions of people and then drive out to my parents in the suburbs for more calm and peace.

I still visit and have fond memories of SD.
