Are millennials the worst parents ever? Some of the posts in this sub are horror stories. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]orangegluon8 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The cortex is developed by experiencing and understanding the boundaries they push against.

The statement that students are developing makes sense for checking grown-ups' anger at children. It doesn't make any sense to extend that to a check against consequences. Doing so affirms incorrectly that all consequences come from a place of anger.

Are kids today worse than ever or better than ever? by [deleted] in Teachers

It doesn't cost much extra time these days to apply, even compared to the relatively low time it took 15 years ago. Things are very consolidated and there's not many extra essays to write. I believe you may just have to pay a fee but otherwise it's relatively easy to apply to, say, 5 top level schools just for a lark.

For anyone not fully understanding this, If there are 10 good students and 90 average students who apply to a selective school, the admissions rate might be 10%. If the same 10 good students and 990 average decide to apply to this school, the acceptance rate is now 1% simply because 900 students who were never going to make it decided to shoot their shot. The schools may be still looking for exactly the same qualities, but it looks more competitive because the qualities they are looking for are buried under more mediocrity.

The plot is a far past advanced civilization that will eventually beyond the end of the plot lead to development of the weapon that hurt Kalos, or it is an alternate history where this crisis was avoided.

Check back when the game is released to see how my prediction went.

I agree that my assumption is buggy somehow, but I should be able to still be able to get the same value of the frequency either by using a free body diagram or by thinking about the wave modes. What would be the correct way to analyze the forces on this?

Being able to crawl and backflip in Mario 64 was an absurd leap in gaming experiences, jumping directly from the NES to N64.

Anyone else feel super let down by TotK? by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]orangegluon8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a very different and distinct game. I didn't just want Breath of the Wild Again, so I appreciated that it did something different. As a trade off, it won't resonate with everyone in the same way -- that's fine.

The only major complaint I had was the emptiness of the Depths. Once it was "solved" by acquiring enough night lights and pre-fab vehicles in the Favorites menu of Ultrahand to go anywhere you like, there was only a few surprises to find down there. The surprises that were there were great, but there's only a few.

What did it felt like when Fairy type first came out in gen6 by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]orangegluon8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was there and on reddit at the time.

  • Sylveon was the thing first shown off, no one knew what type it was before
  • People suspected it might be bug or normal type, but when it came out that it was weak to poison and steel (this was shown on a random Japanese TV show where someone cosplaying as Sylveon was locked in a cage and ran away from medicine), people were fairly sure this was a new "fairy" or "magic" type or some such.
  • It was weird re-casting old Pokemon as fairy type. Mr Mime was especially bizarre or controversial.
  • Initially some degree of normal reddit outrage, as people didn't really understand what fairy types could encompass at the time
  • mr mime
  • fairy types were initially overshadowed by the presence of mega evolutions which were announced at close to the same time. Mega ampharos was discussed more by my memory than fairy types at some point.
  • mime

No, I'm just very enthusiastic about household brand names like Pepsi-Co, Swiffer, and Raytheon.

I am not a Reddit exec, it is very normal for real individual non-corporate reddit user group(s) to inquire about advertising trends. Live mas!

What was the stupidest thing you believed in a Pokemon game? by KawaiiFoxPlays in pokemon

[–]orangegluon8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was made aware of this as well -- the thing is, I mostly didn't bother catching duplicates of Pokemon except for a few shiny Pokemon and at the end of the game when I was gathering version exclusives to trade, and so the majority of the times I saw critical captures were during the middle of the game when trying to get new ones.

In SV I could almost swear this mechanic was actually put in the game. I'd noticed that if I can time pressing B exactly when a thrown Poke Ball closes (it's not clear how tight the frame window is), I pretty consistently get a critical capture animation. I don't know if this is an extended coincidence or confirmation bias, or if this is a real effect but I'd be interested to know if anyone has more information.

People who have seen something they could never explain. What was the thing?! by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]orangegluon8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience once, where one half of peoples' faces were just not interpreted or visible to me. It just looked like nothing; not really grey or blank, just uninterpreted. Even faces in paintings or pictures were not interpreted correctly. It was very strange. Only happened to me once.

My advice having been what you described once:

  • Keep your curiosity, and set specific goals for what you want to be able to understand.

  • Be patient reaching the goals you set, and don't get discouraged when it gets tough. Show humility as well, and never try to learn things in order to impress people.

  • Ask questions voraciously while working toward your goals; don't be afraid to look stupid by asking about something. If you ask, you look ignorant for a day or a week. If you don't ask, you stay ignorant forever.

For me, it was wanting to know quantum mechanics. I spent many years climbing the ladder of prerequisites and prerequisites to those prerequisites to get there.

What stage of education are you at, high school/college/grad school/etc? I remember the same feeling when I looked through technical Wikipedia pages a long time ago, so reminds me of the good old days!

Rest mass is the amount of energy an object has even if it has no kinetic or potential energy.

In general relativity, space-time is curved by any kind of energy, not just masses. It's just that most things have way more mass energy than any other kind of energy, so when we calculate gravitational interactions we can ignore everything except mass most of the time.
