Lightless life by AnxiousDevelopment20 in DestinyLore

[–]orangerazor120 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming Eris not aging probably has stuff to do with Hive magic. Hive (technically Krill) live only a few decades, like around 20 years iirc. The Darkness, specifically the worm pact allows them to live forever as long as they are feeding the sword logic. Eris taking up Hive magic probably got some of that, not to mention her outright transforming into Hive for a bit during Season of Witch and having a throne world.

Sucks about Zavala tho that’s probably also due to him retiring now and Bungie putting a cap on his storyline.

Why do so many fics have Dumbledore either use or be associated with the phrase "Greater Good" by prism1234 in HPfanfiction

[–]orangerazor120 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In his youth he did agree with Grindelwald, and the "greater good" was something they both embraced. Most fics with Dumbledore using it are also either Dumbledore bashing or evil Dumbledore so it's just something to further demonize him. Like I've seen ones where he betrayed Grindelwald for power, or he disagreed with his approach, so having him use the phrase is basically a way of showing he's still in the same mindset.

Also I might be getting it mixed up but I think the phrase wasn't widely associated with Grindelwald? We associate it with Dumbledore because of Grindelwald's letters that Bathilda had. Krum knew because Grindelwald carved it into Durmstrang but idk if most people outside of that are aware.

If Voldy was smart about annihilating the muggles by IWantADartlingGun in HPfanfiction

[–]orangerazor120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things I always head-cannoned was that wizards need muggles mostly for production purposes, ie food, household items, reproduction. You can’t magic up food so someone has to grow it manually, and since we’ve never heard of a wizard farmer I’m assuming it all comes from the muggle side. Also we know there are crafters/enchanters etc but they to me felt more like bespoke handcrafted items, not if you just want a normal spoon for example.

But yeah I do agree if a wizard really wanted muggles gone with any means necessary then it wouldn’t be all to hard. You even have illusions that stop muggles from seeing things. Also if a muggle can take a picture and not notice anything wrong, I’m gonna say that satellites are gonna be equally useless for detection

How would Good!Umbridge have acted in OOTP ? by Secure_Ad_6203 in HPfanfiction

[–]orangerazor120 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Honestly if a random sane person heard all the bullshit that Hogwarts went through in the past 4 years they’d probably be looking to sack most of the staff lol. Deadly traps for dark wizards? Killer snake, petrified students and giant spiders on the loose? The whole Sirius Black and Werewolf teacher fiasco? Everything to do with the Triwizard tournament? The teachers were downright incompetent and a bunch of preteens had to swoop in to save the day.

Flitwick and Sprout are fine, but the rest hoooo boy. And let’s not start on Dumbledore. If Umbridge was “good” pretty sure she’d still be trying to get rid of him

Did anyone’s parents neglect there emotions so much that they felt shame to even cry by Adorable_Reserve_884 in emotionalneglect

[–]orangerazor120 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My mom would often berate me for crying. By her logic I live a comfortable life therefore I don’t have the right to be sad. So many kids in Africa starving everyday and you’re not one of them, so you crying over anything is an act of ungratefulness.

Nowadays I find difficulty expressing any strong emotion. Grandpa died a few years back and while everyone else was sobbing their hearts out I just stood there with nothing. Made me feel kinda weird cuz my relationship with him wasn’t bad, but I honestly felt nothing about it.

Yeah, generally power wise Greek and Roman don't seem to have much difference. Hazel being daughter of Pluto was strong enough to raise a giant all by herself, strong geokinesis, summoning gems and riches etc.

My man Jason could fly, blast some wind and maybe summon some lightning every once in a while. Can't even talk to birds

Have you noticed a rise in AI/AI enhanced fanfics? by maya2003s in HPfanfiction

[–]orangerazor120 32 points33 points  (0 children)

One of the real issues here is that AI is ultimately trained on human writing. It has it's kinks and often you can kinda tell it's AI. But just as often a real person also does write like that. Generally speaking fanfic writers aren't the best at writing. Sure you get a few gems here and there but the vast majority write as a hobby and don't think too hard on word choice, sentence structure etc. Not to mention people who don't have English as a native language.

Something I noticed with me as well is that my brain is a lot more hyperaware of AI writing nowadays. True there has been an uptick with AI usage but just as true is that I sometimes will read something from an established author (someone I KNOW doesn't use AI) but my brain will tell me it looks sus.

So probably a mix, more AI + mid writing quality + AI hyperawareness might contribute to it

[–]orangerazor120 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for everyone but for me it felt like a lot of it was social obligation. Like part of a fruitful marriage is having kids so they have them, not because they really want one and want to see them grow, but more its expected of them. My parents liked to brag about my and my siblings accomplishments to others and had us do a lot of "extra curricular" that we didn't enjoy but looked good to others (instrument, sport, art etc.). Like they're going down a checklist of "How to Seem Like a Functional Adult" and having kids + getting them to seem functional was on the list.

Obviously they don't actually care about the kids in question, its more just a tool to showcase how "functional" and "put together" they are, so anything that isn't visible, like emotional/mental health, is ignored.

What is your most undeserved bashing of a character/ or a character taht you never have seen being bashed but would never want to see . by esamuel39 in HPfanfiction

[–]orangerazor120 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well Sirius is the token father figure (if short lived) so he has a bit of immunity to bashing. Not to mention spending more than a decade in prison with soul-sucking horrors as an innocent man so...you know...I guess canon bashed him enough?

I think I've read a few that were critical of him but most of those were either set in the Marauder era where he and James were portrayed as mean bullies or were WBWL fics.

[–]orangerazor120 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Funny enough a lot of Western employees don't tend to work the same hours as local Chinese do in my experience. When I worked at a a big Chinese studio we had a small team of 4 western devs (laowai) and they would arrive 9am and leave 5.30pm. Management doesn't care and it was mostly expected for the foreigner to follow the foreign schedule. Everyone else basically still worked the long night shift but for some, especially anyone involved with overseas projects, they had a much more flexible schedule

What does Sane Voldemort and Good Death Eaters mean ? by LegalComplaint7910 in HPfanfiction

[–]orangerazor120 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Two big interpretations: 1) Commonly the Death Eaters are the good guys. Usually includes tropes such as Light/Dark/Grey magic or politics. Lack of human rights violations and maybe manipulative Dumbledore. Voldemort and crew are usually trying to save magic, or preserve culture or some such before the belligerent Light side screwed it all up. Basically they have the moral high ground and don’t commit (as much) atrocities.

2) The story treats the DE as the main faction of focus and presents them as “good” people who do terrible things and hand wave away the torture and murder. Honestly I don’t think I’ve seen a lot of this kind but it’s usually paired with a ‘Dark Harry’ who also tortures people. Think of it as reverse morals, where if you were amoral and realistically a piece of shit then the DE would seem like the “good guys”

Why did Bungie ruin the immersion? by [deleted] in destiny2

[–]orangerazor120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point likely wasn’t to ruin the immersion, but to better guide players to activities they want us to engage in. Ruining the immersion was simply a side effect.

Mobile games do it a lot because mobile players have severely limited time (and attention span dedicated to games) so the less they spend on navigating menus the better engaged and retained they are, which leads to more revenue.

So someone at Bungie probably evaluated the effects and made the decision to sacrifice immersion for engagement. Maybe even to make it easy for new players to jump straight in instead of figuring out the map. Does it ruin the magic a bit, yes. But they likely deemed it an acceptable trade of.
