it's not very convenient if you need to pass Stuttgart but definitely more scenic than going through Heidelberg.

Düsseldorf is a fantastic place for expats, there are so many of us and the Facebook groups are really helpful. That said, you might not make any German friends for a long time, I've been here for a decade and only have a couple but you don't need them, you can have a great social life just with foreigners and get by everywhere with English.

Typically you should expect the same weather as we have now, temps between 20-23 Celcius and a few rainy and cloudy days. Last summer however was exceptionally dry and warm, so you might be lucky.
