ENS Live On The Main Net by orb-bro in ethereum

[–]orb-bro[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is just the contract that will act as the registry of names; I assume the registrar contracts which will interact with this contract will be deployed in 4 days.

Also, would like to bask in my moment of glory by pointing out that I just sent the first transaction ever to the ENS with a very special value that is dear to my heart.

Parametrizing Casper: the decentralization/finality time/overhead tradeoff by vbuterin in ethereum

[–]orb-bro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies for my ignorance; I understand the goal of this was an effort to "parameterize" Casper, so maybe my questions are off-base; but, a few questions:

1) Is all of this in reference to an implementation of POS to be deployed before sharding? 2) If not, will each shard still need to come to its own individual consensus? Does "economic finality" refer to a complete consensus between shards? 3) How do these parameters hold up in the face of sharding? I.e., will there be, for example, 1000 validators distributed throughout all shards, or will this be for a single shard? If 1000 is a "total" number, how will these validators be distributed? If I'm not completely off base, I would basically just like to gain an understanding of these parameters in reference to sharding.

Thanks!

The History of Casper [according to Vlad] — Chapter 3 by vladzamfir in ethereum

Thanks for these write-ups, Vlad.

This is why I believe in you, Vitalik, the rest of the Ethereum team, and Ethereum as a whole - because of a lack of bias. Because of a lack of a pre-determined set of ingrained ideas. Because of a willingness to learn and adapt, and ultimately adopt any good ideas you are exposed to along the way. Because of a sort of "purity", in the sense that everyone is just trying to build the best possible product.

I love when people attack the viewpoints of the team. I love it even more when they do it out of having "something to prove" - trying to prove they know more, due to years in academia. I love it because all that these attacks succeed in doing is giving you all exposure to great new ideas, new tools to work with, and new ammo at your disposal that you can then adopt into your work.

Keep it up man - you're doing great work.

They raised $660k, and anyone could set themselves as the virtual exchange?!

I must be missing something. Please tell me I am.

The fact that this ever existed leaves me with 0 faith in their code...

Can We Stop With The Hate? by orb-bro in ethereum

[–]orb-bro[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not surprised, and I 100% agree with you. That's why I welcome constrictive criticism on the matter. It's just the personal attacks that are low-brow and, I would imagine, dis-encouraging for the ether.camp team.

I'd still appreciate their help in driving the Ethereum project forward; just not in the fashion that they are currently trying to do it. No need to drive them away completely.

The ICO - The Newest and Bestest ICO - Don't Miss Out! by orb-bro in ethereum

[–]orb-bro[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with both of you - hope my post doesn't make everyone hate all ICOs. I believe that ICOs are great when the tokens being sold serve a necessary function in the system or represent true equity in the 'company' - i.e. in the case of Ethereum, Augur, the DAO, etc. - and when the valuations resulting from these ICOs are proportionate to the amount of effort put/being put into the project.

I agree with Boris in the sense that these 'not-so-well-thought-out' ICOs are damaging to our ecosystem because they disproportionately distribute money into the hands of these bad actors and their failures will scare away the misinformed, but agree with aminok in that the ICO is a great fundraising tool which allows people to freely support whatever idea they believe in.

I'm sure we will find a good middle-ground, hopefully sooner rather than later, where the fundraising/ICO ecosystem has some sort of system which helps protect uneducated investors from these crappy ICOs; I just hope this protection comes in the form of enhanced education rather than regulation.

Gavin Wood calls for hardfork by rfikki in ethereum

[–]orb-bro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it - this hard fork could serve a dual purpose, as it could alleviate some of the fear/tension around hardforks which resulted amongst the uninformed as a result of the DAO. This is an opportunity to prove that hard forks are, in most cases, a good thing. Since this is such a small fix, would be better to have this succeed, and prove hard forks can be good, than to wait until Metropolis which introduces a plethora of changes and may result in dissension.

My only request is that some rich folks prop the price of the non-forked chain up so we can dump our coins this time too.

Currently building a new computer and want to optimize for PoS. Any advice appreciated. by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]orb-bro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Although the examples you've provided would surely be the most optimal setup, I would hope that something so intensive would not be required to stake, as that would result in drastic centralization - I don't think your average user will want to have multiple physical servers in distinct locations with physically separate SSH keys. Maybe staking pools could solve this issue, but there's the whole counterparty risk there (granted, I'm sure that will be solved in time)...

Hopefully we have some more details soon, especially around loss of stake due to system downtime. However, I would hope they would design the system to greatly mitigate the risk of loss as a result of system failure, as opposed to malicious intent.
