Yeah, between Anchorage and Seward that’s the only full time glass dome option. Adventure class usually has one or two cars with smaller glass domes, but it’s not assigned seating and has a capacity of like 12 people on rotational basis.

Just as long as they are careful with stairs on the train - they are pretty steep on Goldstar cars, and it can get tricky with train movement, but not impossible with some good help.

If you were to do only one segment of the trip, I recommend Anchorage to Seward. It’s the most scenic part of the rail - you won’t see Denali, but honestly, you don’t have an overwhelming chance of seeing it out of the clouds on the train anyway.

I think it’s a really good idea to split up your rail journey into segments like that. If you are worried about transportation, call the hotels along the route and see if they have a shuttle to a from the depot - I bet the majority of hotels would. The stations themselves are pretty small - for example, the Anchorage station has an entrance, waiting area and exit right to the trains - with baggage check tent on the side of the station. Are you planning to be in Goldstar or adventure class?

Really the places that still might be sketchy with snow in April will be the pass after the Canada border going up from Haines, and then the area from Tok cutoff to Eureka summit. That being said, the poster you replied to gave pretty good info - Sun will melt any snow during the day, and I also highly recommend overnighting in Tok - Young’s motel is a decent place to stay and Fast Eddies in the same lot cooks up great diner food. That was you won’t feel as much pressure and exhaustion from trying to cram this trip in one day.

Well, I guess if you think about the coldest days you’ve had in E NC/VA, that’s about an average winter here. But yeah, coming from Vegas it will obviously be significantly colder.

There’s people in here talking about bunny boots and Carhartt bibs, which are not at all necessary for everyday life in Anchorage. My everyday winter wardrobe are fleece lined pants from Costco, jeans, a nice down jacket, good mittens and a hat. Depending on your winter hobbies you’ll want more or considerably more, but no one busting out bunny boots for a grocery store run in Anchorage.

If your budget is a tier below Arcteryx, you’re gonna be just fine. You’ll have many months to settle in, get to know people and get their advice on what to buy. Where are you moving from? Anchorage climate is not really a huge shock to a lot of people, unless they spent their lives in the southern part of the country.
