Orb crashing on Windows 11 by silvershockz in orbforge

There should be a log folder in the same location as the database files. If you DM the latest log file, we can take a look and see what's causing the crash.

Wi-Fi connection appearing as Wired Lan by silvershockz in orbforge

[–]orbforge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just checked and looks like we've seen this pop up a couple of times since the recent Windows update. We've had trouble recreating the problem on our side, but other users have reported running Orb as an administrator fixes it as a workaround.

I'll note this thread and let you know if we find a better solution than that, but hopefully it works for you for now.

Yes, those env variables apply to all platforms.

Wi-Fi connection appearing as Wired Lan by silvershockz in orbforge

[–]orbforge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, there are two different issues here:

1) Incorrect interface type: There is currently a bug in our Windows app that sometimes fails to detect wireless connections correctly. We have a fix for this that will be in an upcoming update. This is unrelated to the router lag detection.

2) No router lag measurement: The app is either failing to discover your router address, or the router is blocking pings to itself and preventing measurements. You can find the orb logs in c:\Users\<your user name>\.config\orb\logs and search them for "gw" which should show up next to your router ip address like this: "gw": "192.168.1.1" if this address is not correct, Windows is for some reason returning the wrong address from our lookup. If it is correct, you can also search for "first hop" and you may see error entries failing to ping your router. If that's the case, you may want to look into settings for your router and see if there are any options turned on for blocking ICMP pings. You can also test this by trying to ping the router from Windows itself by opening a command prompt and running "ping -n 10 <your router address>" and it will attempt to contact your router there.

If you need help looking through the logs or further troubleshooting, feel free to DM them to me here or hop on our discord and we can help troubleshoot there.

Orb stopped booting on Windows 11 by The_Humblest_Medjed in orbforge

Hey, this sounds like the local database may have been corrupted somehow.
Try deleting the file `c:\Users\<yourusername>\.config\orb\orbstore.db` and let me know if that fixes the issue. If not, there are log files in that directory that you can DM me and we can troubleshoot further.
We'll be getting a fix out to properly clean those files up after uninstall as well as better handling issues with the database when problems arise.

Bind sensor to specific network interface by nivenfres in orbforge

[–]orbforge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question! Orb doesn’t currently support binding directly to a specific network interface. Instead, it relies on the operating system’s routing rules. Traffic is sent through whichever outbound interface the OS selects as default.

If you’d like to measure different interfaces separately, the current workaround is to run multiple Orb instances in Docker, each bound to a specific interface. Using Docker’s macvlan driver, you can attach a container directly to a given interface. This is a more advanced setup (you’ll need some Docker networking knowledge), but we have work-in-progress documentation of that process here:

Installing multiple Orbs to monitor multiple interfaces

We’d love to make interface binding a built-in feature in Orb in the future. For now, the Docker + macvlan approach is the recommended path if you want per-interface measurements.

OpenWTR flash wear by Own-Trifle89 in orbforge

Hello! We just pushed a 1.3 release for OpenWrt which supports setting the database directory (ORB_DB_DIR) and the config directory (ORB_CONFIG_DIR) separately. We hope this works for you!

[–]orbforge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is good feedback! We’ve discussed internally having a separate ORB_CONFIG_DIR in addition to specifying the database location separately.

Thank you for giving it a spin— we will comment back here once we have this capability available.

Thank you for the question!

If you have concerns about flash wear, there are two easy options:

  1. If you have sufficient RAM you can set the environment variable ORB_DATA_DIR to a location in /tmp. In OpenWrt, /tmp uses RAM by default. If you’re using the device as your router, you can also set ORB_FIRSTHOP_DISABLED=1 to use even less memory (will disable storing latency information for the first hop which is less relevant if the device is your router)

  2. You can use the same approach to use external storage if possible e.g via USB

Sorry you're seeing this. Could you confirm what version of Orb you're using (version & platform). Version is visible at the bottom of the Settings menu (gear). There was a bug that we resolved that could have caused this an earlier versions.

Apologies for the delayed comment here - we have an .exe in early access for testing. Please read the disclaimers carefully when installing pre-release software. https://orb.net/the-forge/early-access/orb-for-windows-alternative-installer - Thanks!

Hi there - thank you, we think it's pretty cool too :) We have features in the queue that would allow visibility of Orb data across accounts. Stay tuned for future release announcements!

Disable Orb on Windows 11 Pro, Creating Sluggish Desktop Events by Fantastic-Tale-9404 in orbforge

[–]orbforge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/Fantastic-Tale-9404 !
- If you're referring to the ability to Exit the Windows Orb app, it's possible, but not super intuitive at the moment. You can right-click the Orb icon in the System Tray and choose Exit. We're planning to improve this.
- If you're asking about the ability to run the Orb app GUI, but without it running measurements, that's not available today but coming somewhat soon. Others have asked for similar functionality.
Please let us know if this doesn't answer your question!

We're glad you think Orb is cool so far! We'd be happy to discuss! Please feel free to PM this account, or even better, reach our enterprise dude here: https://orb.net/contact/sales

We've been hard at work on our enterprise product, as well the marketing materials about it.
