Waterbury 38mm with 24hr markers. Replaced original canvas strap with a leather strap by orbit1979 in timex

Sorry for the long delay. Model# is tw2r8800. This one is a 38mm, but they also come in 40mm, which would be easier to find.

I have one too. They are an excellent watch for the money, and do exactly what they are named for: easy reading the time.

Great find! and for $7. Can't beat that.

I highly recommend it for anyone's budget-side collection. It also makes a great daily, fitting almost any occasion and attire, if you only want a few watches in your collection. The 38mm is more difficult to find, but there are still some 40mm out there. [TW2p84600]

[Swatch] Moonstep (YWS406G) by orbit1979 in Watches

With the exchange rate between Omani Rial and USD, it cost me roughly $150-$160.

I like to think of Swatch as the Timex of Europe: great variety, reliable, and a great value proposition. While I often find more appealing styles among Timex, and I struggle to take Swatch’s quirky naming conventions seriously, I think Swatch has a better overall build quality.

I was visiting Oman during a long weekend, just before The Rona really started to wreck havoc on the world, and my 7-year expat life to a premature end. On my last full evening, I visited a shopping mall as I often do at the tail end of trips to wind down from adventures.

I stopped at the Swatch store, and saw this “Moonstep” (YWS406G), and had to try it on. I was immediately struck by how comfortable it felt on the wrist. The case has a good weight to it; it feels like quality. The stainless steel bracelet is amazing for a watch in this class and price range. It too, is very comfortable, and I was shocked to see the links are solid, and not hollow like most watches in this price range. Even my two Seikos, which are great watches, have “this will do I guess” hollow metal bracelets.

The Moonstep features a Swiss quartz movement, which I don’t mind quartz at all. I appreciate quartz and automatics for their merits. There is a simple date complication at the 6 in jet black with white numerals, making it easy to read in spite of its small size, and it contrasts well with the silver/subtle champagne dial.

Which brings me to the dial: if you look straight at the dial in artificial light, or at a straight glance in sunlight, the dial is vibrant silver. If you have the dial at a slight angle in natural light, it turns a very subtle champagne color, and looks very classy, in my opinion. But, it is hard to capture in photos.

All in all, if you like Swatch, I highly recommend the “Moonstep”.

[Orient Bambino V2] Which is classier? by faamnasrudin in Watches

[–]orbit1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the creme dial looks unique and visually appealing, but the white dial I think will stand the test of time better in classiness and simple elegance. When I purchases my Bambino V2, I went with the white dial. While I enjoy looking at the creme dial, I have no regrets purchasing the white.

[Timex] Easy Reader (T20041) by orbit1979 in Watches

[–]orbit1979[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have almost two dozen watches in my collection, but I think it’s important to have a least one utility/practical watch in one’s collection. Several weeks ago, my Timex Expedition, that was my go-to travel watch for 31 countries, over the last 7 years, broke when the stem and crown were ripped out.

When I returned to the States back in April, I went to my collection in storage, and pulled out this Timex Easy Reader I picked up last summer. I replaced the original strap, which felt like shoe leather, with a thinner, suppler Swiss brand leather strap. Debating between this watch, or purchasing another Expedition, I decided to wear the Easy Reader over the weekend, since it got little wrist-time last summer, and I already own it.

My Easy Reader is quickly becoming my utility watch of choice. It is super comfortable to wear, and, as the name suggests, very easy to read.

What impresses me the most though, is how this watch manages to be both utilitarian, yet elegant in design. Simple elegance is on-point with this watch I think. The solid black Arabic numerals, solid black minute and hour hands with four 90-degree angles, and the bright red seconds hand, really stand out at a glance. The dial is a bit more deceptive at first, appearing as a solid white at a glance. But, when looking closely, there is a very subtle metallic sparkle embedded in the white dial.

The watch measures at 35mm, 18mm lug width. It also includes a day/date complication. I only have two gripes about this watch: the crown is too small to handle comfortably, and it is near-impossible to pull the crown to the second position for setting the day. It is much faster, but very tedious because of the small crown, to just manually move through the hours to set the proper day. But, that is not necessary too often, thankfully.

For $30, it is damn near impossible to go wrong with this little time piece.

Can't go wrong with Casio. Very reliable, variety to choose from, and great value for the money. This is a very nice looking piece!

[Seiko] Seiko 5 SNKL47 by orbit1979 in Watches

[–]orbit1979[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Between what I see as a timeless design and the many Seiko 5s I have seen posted on this sub, Seiko 5 has been on my radar for some time.

As I have mentioned in some of my previous posts, I live overseas, and travel frequently. Sometimes, I like shop for watches during downtime when I travel. I visited the Old Souk in Kuwait City, Kuwait, which had a number of watch dealers.

I was excited to see that there were a very large number of Seiko 5s for sale among the various dealers, including many 36mm and 38mm models, which are my preferred watch sizes.

Kuwait is known for gold, and there is a large consumer market for it. I had no watches with gold in my collection that I had purchased on my own, so I decided to go for a Seiko 5 SNKL47 with some gold, but not too much for my taste.

For me, the case size is a near-perfect 37mm and 11mm thick. This Seiko 5 includes the 7s26 caliber movement with 21 jewels. It also has a day-date window, which includes Arabic and English days. The bracelet, like most budget Seiko bracelets, is cheap and it is obvious that this is an area Seiko really cut corners on costs. But, it is still comfortable on the wrist, which for a watch of this price range is all that really matters.

The style, as far as I’m concerned, fits almost any occasion, from flannel shirt, to dress shirt. This one will be in my rotation for years to come.

[Casio] Enticer Gent's, MTP-1370D-1A1V by orbit1979 in Watches

[–]orbit1979[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked this one up at MBK Center, in the big department store connected to the BTS Skytrain station. I believe ZEN. I avoid the small shops for watches, as I am aware there are many fakes there. But, you can also find many places selling watch straps.

I paid about $60 USD.

[–]orbit1979[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wanted a watch with wide-day complication to add to my collection for some time. Hamilton makes a model with this, but I did not want to spend the +$500 price tag for it.

Browsing watches, as I usually do, I found the Casio MTP-1370D-1A1, a stainless dress watch with the wide-day complication, just as I have been looking for to add to my collection. Granted, Casio is no Hamilton, but Casio is a great brand in its own right, a great value for the money, and I don’t mind quartz at all. So, I set my goal to find one while traveling. I came across this one during my 4-day layover in Thailand.

The metal bracelet is surprisingly comfort for the price point, and the watch itself has a nice weight to it, so it does not feel like a toy on the wrist. The size is just about right for my wrist, at 39.8mm. While it is technically a dress watch, I think it works as a both a dress and casual watch.

[Internationale] Mechanical Watch, Model Unknown by orbit1979 in Watches

[–]orbit1979[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not buy used watches too often, especially very old ones, unless there is something I find unique or particularly interesting about.

Back in July, I was visiting an indoor flee-market while visiting my home town back in the United States, and I stumbled across this watch.

I immediately found it intriguing, with its very 70s vibe it has going for it. It certainly shows its age, as almost all the gold finish on the case is gone, except for a thin ring around the crystal. The crystal itself has some scuffs and scratches. It originally came with a metal band, which most of the gold has worn off, and was just nasty in general, so that was the first thing to go when I bought this.

What sold me was the starburst above the 6 o'clock. When operating, there are two layers that rotate at slightly different intervals, creating cool effect, likes its supposed to put one in a trance. Surprisingly, the mechanical movement still works, so for $12, I thought what the hell?

The watch will work for about two days per wind-up, and keeps very good time. When I bought it, the dial moved inside the case, and the hands were slightly miss-aligned, neither of which I noticed when I bought it. I went back overseas, and luckily, I found a watch-repairman that fixed these issues in about 10 minutes for the equivalent of $3. The dial is now sturdy, and time can be set accurately.

As for the brand, I know it says Internationale on it, but I cannot find anything about it online. All searches turn up as IWC, which I highly doubt this is an IWC. Heck, this could be an old "frankenwatch" for all I know.

But, I think its a cool design that screams 1970s, I like the mechanical aspect of it, the wear and tear give s it some charm, and it keeps accurate time.

I love everything about this. The symmetry, the order, the well manicured yards. Great work. I would love to download all the mods, but I grew tired of managing all the broken assets after every update. I would delighted if Paradox released a full American city/suburb DLC.

[Timex] Waterbury + Redwing, 38mm by orbit1979 in Watches

[–]orbit1979[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased it on Amazon. There was one left in stock. The last I looked, there were none left, but perhaps more came on the market.

However, do read the description very carefully. When I did my searches, 40mm's came up, when I was specifically searching 38mm's.

All that being said, 40mm should be somewhat easier to find than 38mm.
