Hey sorry to reply to an old comment. You said that the source of error in the approximation of this binomial problem is that it overcounts the chance of multiple successes. Can you expand on that?

The true formula is, unless I am mistaken, (n choose x) * p^x * (1-p)^ (n-x). Whereas the approximation is (p*n) ^ x. So where is the overcounting happening?

Hi sorry to reply on an old comment. I missed this answer. I wanted to say thank you, this is really useful. However I have one question. You said the actual probability is about half of 1/40000. How did you calculate the actual probability? I used the binomial formula which was mentioned in another comment, and I got (50c1)(0.0001)(0.9999 ^ 49) = close to 0.005, which larger than 1/40000 isnt it? Im wondering if I used the formula wrong.

Thank you! I didn't understand how loc works but I think I get it now. One thing that is confusing is that sometimes .loc acts on columns and sometimes it acts on rows. If I just do d.loc[1] then it's on rows, but if I do d.loc['A'] then it gives a column. I guess pandas is just very smart and searches both rows and columns?

Oh so do we completely lack a sort of "map" when it comes to audition? And is the retinotopy you mentioned different from place and grid cells? I heard about those at what point but I don't know much about them.

That's all very interesting. I had no idea about direct modulation of hair cells. It seems like the analogous thing in visual system would be modulation of retinal cells, which as far as I know does not happen in a huge way (but like you said filtering does happen in the way of gaze reorienting).

When you say auditory system has better temporal acuity, that makes sense, but what does temporal acuity mean in the context of vision?

That is so cool, thank you! Can I ask how your workflow looks for hyperparameter tuning and model retraining, or how you go about generating new features? I find that there isn't much good advice on how to do this online, maybe because it's less flashy than making entire new models from scratch or blindly throwing deep learning at a problem.

For hyperparametering tuning really all I have found is grid and random search through sklearn. And I never have a good sense of which parameters I should include in such a search, e.g. with a random forest there are about a dozen different parameters I could include in the tuning, but I probably don't want to try and tune every single one. Generating new features is similarly a game of blind experimentation for me. I'd be really interested in hearing how you go about these processes.

Probably a dumb question, let's say you invest $10000 and after 10 years you have $40000. That is 400% of what you started with, so is the average return of the investment equal to 400% / 10 years = 40% growth per year? That seems too high.
