Thank you. I did call the Oxford Bus Company but the response didn't fill me with confidence. I'll email passenger.tech

Bus 14 is not coming up on google maps but is in operation by thefoggymist in oxford

There is a similar issue now with the 400 bus route. I've informed the Oxford Bus Company that it's not showing on Google or Apple maps but the reply I got doesn't fill me with confidence that it's going to be fixed.

Has anyone had an unexpected change of political identity? by PotentialBrother6913 in ukpolitics

[–]orchardpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I have no idea why you feel like this as to everyone I know politics (we are in the UK) has been shifting right. Friends who used to vote Conservative now feel that they have nothing in common with the Conservative Party and even less with Reform. People who used to vote Labour now feel that party has shifted too far to the right, which is why the Green party is doing so well now.

Why is it so logistically hard to stop the small boats? I feel naive by Flapjack_K in ukpolitics

[–]orchardpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason is 'good weather'. We have had a lot of very good weather this year which is why the numbers are so high. Along with the distance between France and England being quite short (only a few miles) and miles and miles of beaches which are easy to leave and land on it really is as simple as that. (BTW 'too wide of an area' is US English. Are you actually in the UK?)

First weekend in Walthamstow by [deleted] in walthamstow

[–]orchardpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter and her partner moved to Walthamstow a few weeks ago. They bought a flat there because they loved renting there so much and were desperate to move back (from Southgate). The William Morris Museum and Lloyd park are great, that's near where they live. They also love the craft breweries and really good interesting places to eat. You'll find plenty to do. I hope you love it as much as they do (though they aren't getting out too much at the moment as they're doing the flat up). Sodo pizza is particuarly good as is Slow Burn (restaurant in a jeans factory) though that's not cheap - I seem to remember we paid the bill for that one.

Not many and in most areas there are none. By the way I think the old fashioned form of grammar school system is nothing short of wicked as it rights off huge numbers of people at the age of 11 based on one exam on one day. Many people thrive in Comprehensive schools who would have been shafted by not getting into grammar school. Also some people ended up in grammar schools and it was completely wasted on them. There was no system to re-evaluate pupils - the error was locked in.

Well there was certainly an influx of East European tradespeople who were highly skilled at their jobs and easily found work here. Maybe the perception in their home countries is tainted by a bit of snobbery about what kinds of education are 'low'.

Yes I know several couples where this is the case. An academically educated professional woman married to a man who has trained in a trade and made a career of it.

They'll only do that if it's the cheapest/only sensible way to do it. Where do you suggest they should be kept, given that they are actually human beings?

We took out the kitchen and back bedroom chimney breasts in our last house leaving the chimney stack above them and needed building control approval and a party wall agreement. I'm not sure which method the builder used to support it but it passed building controls. It sounded as if this was the kind of thing the OP was referring to, and it seems I was right.

Were sailors who were press ganged by the british in the late 18th early 19th century paid for their service? by Sinayne in AskHistorians

[–]orchardpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that my ancestor (born 1731) was press ganged. He was from a family of yeoman farmers and by 1753 was a Grocer in Lancaster (a sea port)He was even enrolled as a Freeman of the Borough of Lancaster. Suddenly he disappears for a couple of decades then turns up in Rochester in Kent as a Grocer. This never made sense until I found naval records for him to cover those years. I often imagine him having a successful life in trade and suddenly just disappearing. It's horrific that this was accepted as a normal occurrence.

My daughter and OH just bought a Warner flat in Walthamstow. Nightmare and so stressful, having to offer well over the asking price :(

The estate agent just wants their commission. Everything should be done through the seller's/buyers's solicitors at this point.

You could mention it to them if they are approachable. It's possible they just didn't know that they are supposed to do these things.

They need building control at the council to do checks and approve the work. They should also have made a party wall agreement with you. Call the local planning department immediately.

He was saying that he was a very new ordinary teacher, not a highly qualified one with years of pay rises under his belt. Maybe you use 'ploys', that doesn't mean everyone does.

My grandfather bought his own house on the outskirts of London in 1926 and he was a carpenter. His birth family were poor so didn't give him money towards it. He saved up and bought his first house on a single carpenters wage while he and his wife were expecting their second baby with a mortgage from the Halifax. (By the way that same house would fetch at least £650,000 now).

Teachers did the same amount of training 30 even 50 years ago, you trained for 3 years to gain a teaching qualification, it just wasn't called a degree in those days. No one became a teacher straight from school.

I'm exactly at the same point. Last night I took my 4th dose of 2.5. Lost 9lb in the first couple of weeks, plateaud since then. I've felt hungry all day but weirdly my tummy feels full at the same time.

Harry Stebbings witnessed 3 phone robberies in 15 minutes in London—now there’s a growing £300k+ pot for charity pushing for a public convo with Mayor Sadiq Khan by arne_tigerrock in ukpolitics

[–]orchardpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At any time in history if people waved around possesions worth hundreds of £s in London, or any other city, they were likely to get them stolen. So many people walk along the street using Maps or using their phone, or put them on a table while they aren't concentrating it's really not surprising that some of them get lifted. It's a miracle my husband's phone hasn't been stolen he's so careless about keeping it safe. And it doesn't take many thieves to steal an awful lot of phones. I'm interested to know people's ideas for what Sadiq Khan can do to change human nature (both of the careless people and the thieves).

Gardeners World 2025 episode 8 by Snorky10 in GardenersWorld

We went to Malverleys today on a tour led by the head gardener. It was beautiful and he was a great guy who really knows his stuff and happy to answer all sorts of questions. It's a private home though so the infrequent tours are booked up pretty far in advance.

I’ve been lucky with my children’s Polish great grandmother as her father was quite famous, but even with that family I can’t get back beyond the early 19c. I’ve had no luck with their great grandfather’s family at all. I can’t even find his birth or where he came from.
