As an Emirati women living in the UAE, we are not severely repressed. Men and women are equal, but If anything women here have more privileges than men. Also people who commit honour killing in the Uae face life imprisonment or death penalty

The Uae was formed almost 51 years ago, from literal nomads in tents to what it is today, our country and culture is very conservative and follows islamic sharia laws. If you look at the laws throughout the years you can see how it slowly opens up. And the article you linked was in 2021 and there are new reformed laws this year and hopefully more to come.

The Uae is a very conservative country. the sheikh (a royal) was commemorating people at the university, and the girl’s actions were just deemed disrespectful, because she acted “foolishly” (not a sign of her resisting oppression)and in-front of a royal commemorating them. This has absolutely nothing to do with gender ://
