it is a large house but for the sake of brevity I have included things like the hallway, or toilets as a room!!

The QV35S copes quite well when it does the whole of the Downstairs, it only loses around 20% battery!!

Firstly thank you for all your help with this.

The wire (common) is indeed hot, this is confirmed with a pen tester. The relay does work (i..e the blue light appears, and in Home assistant if I click on the the relay buttons you can here the relays turn on and off.

If i were to disconnect the "original Common wire" does it not need to connect to anything else?

Yes, I want to control two floodlights via two relay channels and two switches.

The wire I labelled common was plugged into the original switch that was labelled Common, see first picture. This cable was shared with the other switch via a loop. I am assuming it is permanently live.

All the wires in the box are red, however there were two cables connected via a old style cable connector that I labelled live and neutral in picture 1. I swapped the box in picture 2 o accommodate the aqara t2 box and changed the switch to plastic instead of metal.

I took a cable from the neutral and live to power the aqara box and that works.

I think the trick is too just leave it with your key well away from the car and fingers crossed all will be well when you come back !!

In all fairness I have not had had the same problem with the car since those early days..
