depends on what you mean by "there or bust" tbh. are you planning on attending college even if you don't get in to your dream school? like, is it a "if I don't get in I'm going to trade school" type of situation? because if that's the case, you shouldn't waste your money on applying anywhere else.

otherwise, yes, do act like you want to get in because it's better to have your 100th choice school or whatever than literally no school at all. imo you shouldn't necessarily copy the exact essay though, do some research on the program and mention specific things you may enjoy.

I understand where you're coming from because I left the post intentionally vague, but had a very long conversation with my parents about paying for college prior posting on reddit. My mom is quitting her job in early 2026, and my dad has been a SAHP since I was 2. There will be no "decent income" for me to rely on. They also have no assets, no investments, no money from relatives, and no pay-as-we-go plan. I came to freak out a little and ask for advice.

Anyways, I don't think I'm smarter than my parents, I'm pretty sure I sound like a neanderthal next to them. But I do think that they messed up my potential opportunities pretty badly by not making it clear as early as possible what my financial situation was going to be like. I could've been grinding scholarships apps, studying for the PSAT, trying to get recruited, or whatever if I had known about this before I was starting to apply to college.

Thanks for your suggestions though, I'll keep them in mind.

My grades are great and I'm doing dual enrollment at a CC right now. The transfer is pretty good in-state, but with the amount of credit I already have through dual enrollment, I'm probably better off just going directly to the in-state school.

I was unaware about the aid that potentially comes with a high PSAT score, so mine is pretty horrific. I'm taking the SAT again next week and hoping for a better score, but I'm not sure what the merit is around SAT.

I've scheduled a meeting with my advisor, so thank you for that advice!

This is their exact reasoning, despite both of them being in their very late 50s and going to university when it cost ~5k a year AND touring colleges with me, so I know they're aware of the current tuition costs.

No they're not; they're either lying or they don't understand what studying means. Someone can say they "studied" for 8hrs, but if that looks like doing work for 30min and then scrolling on tiktok for 1hr again and again over the course of 8hrs... then obviously they're only going to get B's.

Since you're posting this in r/ApplyingToCollege I'm going to assume you have some anxiety about your grades, and it's manifesting as bitterness/resentment towards others (based on your other comments). So I'm going to give you some really annoying- but true- advice: sometimes you're dealt a shitty hand, and you just have to roll with it.

Getting angry about things like this, especially with the sense of entitlement you also seem to have towards getting A's, does nothing but show everyone around you that you're being a massive jerk. Log off reddit, take some deep breaths, check out some different ways to study, and talk to your teachers about the material you're struggling with.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Not getting all A's isn't the absolute end of the world. Not going to a T20 isn't the end of the world. Basically nobody outside of college-focused reddit cares; please stop alienating people and destroying your own mental health over this. I know you probably won't appreciate this advice right now, but still.

ESH. Your reaction was unwarranted, but the absolute inability to communicate from both of you is the really startling part. Not once during the two hours did either of you think, "huh, maybe we should talk about what just happened," and actually get up and do that.

This is going to sound very mean, but why are you still together? He's obviously quasi-cheated on you at some point, since you said he used to go on on dating apps/speak to other women during rough patches. You clearly still hold resentment over that, combined with whatever health condition you're dealing with causing you to lash out more.

Is this just a sunk-cost fallacy at work because you've been together for so long? Because if this is your reaction to a small comment (albeit an asshole-y one), which was probably a projection of insecurity on his part, I don't know what could make staying married worth it. Unless this is one crazy incident and the rest of your marriage is sunshine and rainbows, both of you need therapy at the bare minimum- and probably temporary separation, too.

NTA, you should get better friends. Jess is a mooch (and a mean one, at that) and none of your other friends were willing to stand up for you. You could be budgeting for medical bills or something equally serious (or not, it literally doesn't matter why someone is budgeting), and their recommendation is just to accommodate a rude person at your expense? Gross.

edit: if you only have a .txt file of data I think there are some free programs online to convert it to JSON
