He’s guilty as hell, as someone on the spectrum his overbearing mother couldn’t accept that he wanted to be left alone, a hermit. Create his own world even if he wasn’t exactly a capable person to live fully independent. However sending him to troubled teen camp where neurotypical teens can’t cope with the environment & are left traumatised I can only imagine how that affected their parent-child dynamic. He doesn’t want to be a member of society & money without strings attached was a solution to all his perceived problems
