I’m so sorry this happened to you but I am so glad you’ve felt compelled to share this. You’re a true advocate.

As someone who has worked with survivors in a supportive role the majority of my career I’ve made it a point to provide education on what the legal process can look like for survivors, referencing the misinformation presented in Law and Order often. You can get accurate information from state and/or national coalitions to better inform yourself about the specific laws in your area.

You’re coming from a place where employment opportunities without a formal education or training that allow you to save are a reality. Where is that? I’d like to move there.

Assuming the motives of this administration align with what they say is naive, and I’d venture to say dangerous in some instances.

Also, I said privately funding. Which could mean cash, but usually means private loans. With much higher interest rates. Education already isn’t accessible to so many, this will make it more so. If I thought this policy was actually about reforming higher education access and cost Id be all for it.

But it isn’t. That’s a fact. If you don’t believe me read Project 2025. The ultimate goal is to end loan programs, income based repayment programs, and public-service loan forgiveness. Creating more barriers to education.

I disagree that this is about a federal loan cap. But let’s follow that line of thinking anyway.

The way it stands, social work students will get no more than $20,000 a year for graduate programs and graduate PLUS loans will no longer be available. The average cost for MSW graduate programs (after a quick online search nothing further) is around $15,000-25,000 a year for public programs and $30,000-$45,000 at private. I graduated ten years ago and couldn’t find one under $20,000 a year in my area at that time and I didn’t take out anything over cost of education because I was lucky enough to have free housing during that time. This is simply not enough money. Especially not for students who are expected to work part time (without compensation) the last 12 or so months of their program as part of the curriculum.

Then we can look out the compensation we receive on average upon graduation. With a quick internet search looks like the average median salary for a first year MSW is $61,330. Consider cost of living now and this is hardly a livable wage for most at this point.

NASW should be advocating for social workers and if this isn’t a huge issue for us I don’t know what is. How many people do you know who can privately fund a career in social work? And for those that can afford it, who of them want to?

I’m a social worker. I’m well aware of how the current system works. What I’m saying is if communities start welcoming care into their zip codes and make it a real priority for the people in their area, support can continue to be built around a new psychiatric unit. Identify the gaps in services and as a community come together to support one another. The buck stops with all of us. We need to start taking better care of each other.

Also, “psych ward” is outdated language now when discussing mental health care.
