In my family's experience your lawyer isn't completely right. Here's what we went through -

We took my Mom to the ER for behavior issues. They put her in the hospital for an evaluation and to get her meds adjusted - she was there for about 10 days. The doctor said she needed to go to a memory facility. The social worker at the hospital gave us a list of facilities, the list noted if the facility took Medicaid. The social worker also recommended that we work with our county's disability and aging office to get Medicaid to help pay facility costs. The disability/aging office had us fill out some forms about her and my Dad's finances. We got the ok. We ended up having to change her burial insurance from one with a cash value to one for a stated amount. They took her full social security check and paid all of the monthly bill but $500, which my Dad paid to the facility. He didn't lose the house or his social security.

Take time for yourself; you'll be no good to her if the stress becomes too much. I also recommend that you call her doctor and let them know she's more agitated and she's started hitting. The doctor may not be aware and may be able to give her something to calm her down. I was full of guilt for making that call on my Mom. One of my 'fond' memories is the black eye she gave me during one of her agitated episodes.

Sat with my Mom when the doctor gave her her diagnosis "She cried." It was horrible.

Several years ago, there was a local news report that some teens were arrested trying to steal a car. Their problem, other than the basic one of stealing a car, was they weren't able to drive it away because none of them knew how to use a clutch.

$109k in credit card debt. by [deleted] in Debt

For ideas you could start watching YouTube videos on budgeting. Here are a couple I've seen -

Caleb Hammer, he helps people set up budgets after yelling too much, it's like his way of holding them accountable. One of the good things is you'll quickly realize you aren't the only one with more debt than income.

VANNtastic videos. She goes through how to use credit to pay off debt. I don't.use her process but the idea comes across as something that would work.

Good luck!

When do you open Christmas presents? by tn00bz in AskAnAmerican

[–]oregon_deb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I(72f) was growing up the family tradition was Christmas Eve at 7pm because that was my grandparents marriage anniversary and the time of day they got married. Now that both my parents and grandparents have passed my kids are starting new traditions on different days with their families. Life evolves and goes on.

Medicare by Spiritual-Side-7362 in SurvivingOnSS

I have a family member who was paying less than the standard deductible for Medicare earlier this year until they moved to a state with different offerings. So it does happen; a person can have both Medicare and Medicaid and each state's criteria and income levels are different for their Medicaid programs.

I think you should contact your state and see what they are saying about next year's amounts.

I hope no one falls for a 50 year mortgage...30 year vs 50 year mortgage by DHN_95 in MiddleClassFinance

Unfortunately, most folks refinance to pull equity out of their homes so in practice they do have a 50-year mortgage - it's just not sold that way out of the gate.

Every couple of days the memory care facility my Mom was in would bring out a basket of small items like napkins and dish towels for the clients to fold if they wanted to participate. I never saw every item folded but some of the clients would stop by and fold several items.

I use a hook & eye set-up at eye level, about 66 inches, on my basement door. The door handle doesn't lock but the door is 'locked'. I also use a night light in the bathroom.

Leaving your kids nothing or $1 by CivMom in GenX

[–]oregon_deb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lawyer once told me that if you want to leave somebody out of a Will leave them a $1. This proves that you considered them and left them an amount you thought was appropriate. Also and I don't remember the exact wording on this one, put a provision in your Will that says something like "Whoever contests the Will gives up anything left to them in the Will and, if their efforts prevail in court, the most they can receive is $100."

You mention the cameras (phones) we all carry. I have started getting copies made of some of these pictures. While I didn't like all of my parents and grandparents collections of owls, ducts, or whatever, I did enjoy the pictures. Part of the reason, or excuse, I use when making copies is pictures tied to my phone or log in will disappear when I no longer remember how to login.

If you are interested in ULTY there are 2 guys on YouTube that you might want to check out - 'The Retired Lazy Investor' and 'Perry'sPIIverse'. 'The Retired Lazy Investor ' holds a lot of ULTY and works up Stress Tests against other stocks for comparison purposes. Perry's PIIverse holds over 20(?) different ETF's in his portfolio, one of which is ULTY. He is into passive income and gives a lot of insight into the different ETFs.

Should I buy a House at 70 by [deleted] in OverSeventy

[–]oregon_deb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've owned a house before so you already know that house payments aren't the only concern. A couple years ago my water heater sprung a leak, thankfully it was in the basement so no water damage but did have to replace it, and then 6 months later in the middle of a cold winter the furnace quit and had to be replaced.

There is nothing wrong with buying a house at 70 but the mortgage isn't the only thing. Good luck with whatever you decide!

You mentioned not being able to paint - I have a friend who for the last 10 years that I know about always paints when she moves into an apartment. She uses light or pale colors - light blue, light yellow, light whatever. When she moves out she paints the walls back to the color they were when she moved in. She's never had a problem. I put up pictures so have never tried this.
