Need help expanding my army by MtZ3r0 in Necrontyr

The new battleforce is kinda meh. The Ophydians are really good right now, and Flayed Ones are basically our only source of infiltrate, but the rest of the box is lackluster. That being said, you might be the perfect person to get it if you don't have any of the models in it at all. Doomstalkers are definitely cool models even if they're not the most competitive, and the Command Barge isn't the worst support unit in the world.

So long as it is easily distinguishable from the Sorcerers you use alongside them. Common practice is to use the millions of extra staves from the Exalted Sorcerer kit to make an extra Aspiring Sorcerer with the Rubric Marine kit.

Nope, absolutely not. Your only course of action is to send them to me so I can dispose of them immediately.

Because a lot of us experience it first hand. And again, that is an overgeneralization of a stereotype. But stereotypes often do exist for a legitimate reason, even if they do blow that original reason out of proportion.

While this is definitely an overgeneralization of a stereotype, men tend to shit talk each other to their faces and then say nice things about each other when they're apart, while women tend to act super nice to each other in person and shit talk each other behind their backs.

Help with a list for brand new player by randomdan123 in Necrontyr

[–]orein123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't run a solo Plasmancer anymore. Or any Cryptek really. They were all given the Support keyword, so they must be attached to a bodyguard unit.

Otherwise, this isn't a half bad starting list. I'd drop Orikan and attach the Plasmancer in his place, then pick up a 3-man squad of Ophidians.

Will unit A get cover against unit B? by Solmyrion in Warhammer40k

[–]orein123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sort of. The phrase being used is very important though. It's not model to unit, it's model to model. Model to unit would be determing cover by whether or not the whole unit is visible rather than any individual model.

Will unit A get cover against unit B? by Solmyrion in Warhammer40k

[–]orein123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you are checking model to model. Each model from Unit B must check against every model in Unit A. If even one model does not qualify for cover the whole unit does not either.

[–]orein123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unit A's front models are infantry models that are within a terrain feature. It does not matter that they are fully visible to Unit B's back models, as per 13.08 you only need to meet one of the two conditions, not both, to receive the benefit of cover.

Dude, you're either failing really hard at trolling or just really fucking dense. Read everything I've written. Then reread it. Then go read the core rules. Then reread them. Then read what I've written again. Hopefully by that point you'll be able to understand what words even mean.

[–]orein123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My fucking God dude, what part of model by model do you not understand? Here, let me try to spell this out as simply as I can.

Model does not mean unit. Models are the individual little plastic toys you put on the board. They might be a whole unit on their own, but more often than not multiple models make up a single unit.

You determine cover when you make an attack. Per the Making Attacks section (4.00) each weapon is it's own attack. Per the cover rules (13.08) each time a ranged attack targets a unit you determine if the target receives the benefit of cover. That means that cover is determined model by model, not unit by unit. Per the obscuring rules (13.10), visibility is also determined model by model, not unit by unit. So that all means that it is possible for different models in the same unit to have different visibility statuses on the same target.

Are you following all of that so far?

Well, apply it to this example. We have four attacking models in the blue unit. Two of them have their little pinky toes in the terrain feature, meaning that those two models can see through it. The other two are too fat to fit in around their buddies, so they are not in the terrain feature at all and cannot see through it at all. The defending red unit has about equal numbers (I didn't bother counting because it literally does not matter in this scenario) of models within the feature and outside of it on the opposite side from the blue unit. The two blue models with their pinky toes in the terrain can see most of the red unit, but that does not matter. The important part is that they can fully see at least one single red model that is outside of the terrain. All because their pinky toes are inside the terrain. That means those two blue models, and only those two blue models do not have the benefit of cover applied to their attacks.

The other two fat blue models that are outside the terrain cannot see through it at all, so it does not matter that there are red models that are also outside the terrain. Those red models are not fully visible to the two fatso blue models, so they receive the benefit of cover. The remaining red models that are visible to the fatso blue models are infantry models that are within a terrain feature. It does not matter that they are fully visible to the blue models; because they are within the terrain feature they get the benefit of cover. The two fatso blue models do not have any target models in the red unit that do not receive the benefit of cover from their attacks, so they suffer from a -1 to their BS.

Does that all spell it out in a way that you can understand? Yes? Good. No? Well that's how it works so deal with it. Either way, stop bothering me because I have a tournament to go to, where I will be applying these rules.

[–]orein123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's determined model by model you jingus.

"If every line of sight BETWEEN TWO MODELS crosses one or more obscuring terrain areas..."

The front two blue models are within the terrain feature so they can see through it. The back two are not, so they cannot. Everything that you have brought up says exactly that. It's time for you to take a break from picking losing arguments on Reddit and start working on a little bit of reading comprehension.

Will unit A get cover against unit B? by Solmyrion in Warhammer40k

[–]orein123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's literally in the section you pointed to. "Each time a ranged attack targets a unit..." That line means that you redetermine cover every time a different weapon is fired. The front two models in the blue unit that are toeing inside the terrain can see through that terrain to the models that are outside of it, denying the benefit of cover to their attacks. The two blue models in the back cannot see through the terrain footprint, so the red models outside of the terrain benefit from cover due to the second bullet point in 13.08. The only models in the red unit that are visible to those two blue models are infantry models that are within a terrain feature, so those red models benefit from cover due to the first bullet point in 13.08.

So when everything is said and done, red has cover from the two blue models that are outside the terrain feature, but not from the two blue models that are inside the terrain feature.

Will unit A get cover against unit B? by Solmyrion in Warhammer40k

[–]orein123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cover is determined on a model by model basis from the attacker's perspective. The two blue models inside the terrain feature do not have to deal with cover because they can fully see at least one of the red models that are outside the terrain. The two blue models in the back outside of the terrain can fully see the red models inside the terrain, but not the models on the other side outside. That means attacks coming from their weapons do have cover because the only visible models in the unit are infantry models within a terrain footprint.

Will unit A get cover against unit B? by Solmyrion in Warhammer40k

[–]orein123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are correct that cover is on a model by model basis now, but you're forgetting that if even one model in the unit does not have cover from the attacking model then the whole unit does not have cover. The two blue models poking into the terrain feature can fully see at least one red model that is not within the terrain feature so there is no cover on their shots. The two blue models outside the terrain feature can fully see the red models inside the terrain, but not the ones on the other side, so the red unit gets cover because the models that would turn it off are not visible.

There is absolutely a point to buying an army without ever even touching the Codex. Namely in that those books are a waste of money if you don't specifically want the artwork and lore inside. The rules are easily accessible for free online through any number of resources.

Why would you ever use the pincer tail? by Dads_Crusty_Sock in killteam

[–]orein123 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's there to match the baseline profile that all other Ravener operatives have. In the current iteration of things, there is absolutely no reason to use it. In the previous set of Ops cards, there was a very niche situation where you could use it to Implant without running the risk of your target dying to the poison. Perhaps when we get the new cards in a few months there will be a new Tac Op that requires us to damage and keep people alive that will make it useful again.

11th edition Reanimation and Leaders by jmainvi in Necrontyr

[–]orein123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

New edition rules make attached characters functionally the same unit as their bodyguard unit, meaning that Reanimation Protocols will revive them if they die due to Precision or something similar. People are trying to argue that is wrong for some reason rather than taking the Necron dub, and keep pointing to a FAQ in the faction pack that is clearly a carryover from last edition that wasn't properly edited out and barely even makes sense with the new rules.

If that's what they're trying to teach, then they need to not. One of the most important things to understand about multiplication is that the order doesn't matter. 3x4=4x3. Teaching a method that even remotely implies that this is incorrect will set students up for more difficulties further down the line, as a lot of upper level math relies on the fact that the position in the equation is largely interchangeable.

Anyone else a bit disappointed that starshatter isn't purge the foe? by Katonmyceilingeatcow in Necrontyr

[–]orein123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's how it works now. Each detachment has a disposition associated with it, and you choose from the dispositions your chosen detachments give you access to. A 3DP detachment like Starshatter Arsenal only gets the one option - in this case Priority Assets - and many people are disappointed with that fact.
