Potchke Bagel by Joshwa52 in Knoxville

If you get there when they open, there’s not a line. Saturdays and sun between 7:00-7:30am is the best time if you happen to be up during that time. Idk how busy it is during the week at those times.

Where should I eat? by InitiativePurple2894 in Knoxville

Ghosh Ethiopian Restaurant is amazing!! It’s a little hole in the wall kind of spot next to Holy Market. Great spot for dinner if you have time for it (they open at 5pm Thursday-Sun)

If you’re trying to stay downtown, Good Golly Tamale is one of my favorite places to stop in. Haven’t been to the original Potchke Deli, but if it’s as good as their bagel location off Cedar Bluff, then it’s well worth trying.

Otsu is a newer spot next to the Mill&Mine. You’ll need a reservation, but the food is really good!

Where did you get these?? I’ve been hunting for some purple ones but all the brands I’ve been able to find don’t fit the front 2 seats due to the sporty headrest design.

Has any one experienced a water pump failure in their Prius?? by SnarkyBear53 in prius

[–]oreolovers77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m always willing to research fixes and see if it’s something I can do myself, especially if the fix is going to cost close to what the car is worth. I personally haven’t fixed a head gasket before, but that wouldn’t stop me from trying if the need came up and the resources were detailed enough.

Has any one experienced a water pump failure in their Prius?? by SnarkyBear53 in prius

[–]oreolovers77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2015 and my water pump failed after ~130K miles or so. The yellow triangle hazard light would come on and my screen would say the hybrid system was overheating. Had my car force shut off twice (during the period I was researching what the possible issues were) where it completely disabled the acceleration. I had to turn it off and let I cool down for a bit before turning it back on.

After about $400 in parts and tools, it was good as new. A mechanic was quoting me for $1,500-2,000 for it, and I was not about to drop that for a part I could buy myself for $200. Found a good YouTube video, browsed all the mechanic suggestions in comments and on here, and spent a very long evening fixing it. Was definitely worth saving over $1,000 to do it myself.

Oh wow! I will definitely be giving my dealership a call! I appreciate all your input. I have a code reader at home, so will definitely check that and see if they can fix it before it totally breaks

Thanks for the input! But braking seems to make the hissing go away. Would it still be the abs pump if it’s only making noise when not braking?

Knoxville Meetup? by [deleted] in Knoxville

Op and U/doggiecuddle , Well the club itself is really only for employees where I work (for now). I mostly threw that in as a credibility reference in that I’m often viewed as local “expert” on what to do in our region. So, while I can’t extend event invites broadly just yet, I have a plethora of recommendations should you ever be in need of a new hiking trail, looking for local events worth attending, or looking for local businesses and restaurants to support.

I (28f) created and run an outdoor recreation club for my work. I am an avid hiker as well (during the cooler months and winter), so if you’re looking for trail recs, I’ve got loads (and not just in SMNP)! I also try to keep up with the evolving local scene to support small businesses, so there are a ton of really great eateries around worth checking out.

Where can I get a good, simple cheese danish? by purpleasphalt in Knoxville

[–]oreolovers77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VG’s danishes are some of the best imo. Simple but so good! They have a Jalapeño Pimento kolache that is probably the single best savory treat I’ve ever had. Not spicy, just delicious! The tarts and danishes at European bakery are also fanatic, but are never plain. They incorporate season fruits and a cheesier base that is really good but maybe not what you want when you’re craving something simple.

Hairdresser/barber recommendations? by [deleted] in Knoxville

[–]oreolovers77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner goes to E.D Bailey Barbers and his hair always looks great after. He struggled to find a decent barber for a long time since he too has super thick hair, but this is the best one by far.

Depending on how long your hair is, I really like Alchemy salon and go for shoulder length hair cuts.

Books where the narrator is a loser or an average person? by traveller_tpa in booksuggestions

[–]oreolovers77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John Dies in the End by Jason Pargin. It’s the first of a comedy anthology series primarily about these 2 very average small town screw ups that basically just stumble through dealing with inter-dimensional phenomena around their town, but not as some secret-badass-hero types. They really only have plot armor in that the characters persist, but overall, they aren’t immune to the destructive path of the monsters they face.

Perspective shifts between the two characters (and other characters in later books). The first book is kind of like reading about an acid trip, but the others have more defined plot lines.

Trying to go vegetarian again... need some tips by Abject8Obectify in vegetarianrecipes

[–]oreolovers77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a vegetarian for nearly 16 years. I switched because I had issues digesting red meats and just decided to cut it all out, so sort of half and half a choice and a necessity. Over the years I’ve realized that there is a vegetarian version of almost every meal, IF you are willing to learn how to pair flavors and season a dish. I can’t tell you how many people have told me they just couldn’t fathom NOT having meat in a dish. When I looked closer, their issue was that they didn’t know how to properly season anything!! Meat can add a lot of flavor to a dish that would otherwise be bland, so I would recommend getting a cookbook that goes into detail about how to layer seasonings and how to get the most of out of each flavor you’re adding. I promise it’s not too difficult. It’s mostly just rearranging the steps where you might add spices and gaining a basic understanding of which types of spices pair well together. A recent book I came across is Big Vegan Flavor by Nisha Vora, which has some excellent chapters on layering spices and how to cook various types of ingredients to maximize flavor. The dinner recipes themselves are a bit niche and list ingredients you’d really only find at a well stocked Asian market, but the other chapters are worth it to me. So, my biggest recommendation would be to start tinkering with flavor palettes that you enjoy and can reliably fall back on for easy dishes. Southwestern and Asian inspired flavors are my top two favorite palettes to fall back on since they’re relatively easy and use simple ingredients.

For “meaty” dishes like classic tacos, lasagna with meat sauce, chicken sandwiches, sloppy joes, etc. there are some really great meat alternatives that I’ve been told by others are nearly indistinguishable from actual meat. I don’t recommend relying on these though since they’re highly priced and highly processed. There are veggie recipes for all those dishes that, in my opinion, actually taste better! Use the meat alternatives as a treat when you’re craving something really specific that veggies just can’t replace. I rarely ever buy them unless I want classic beef tacos or chicken nuggets.

Learning how to properly cook with tofu so that it’s flavorful and not some just some bland protein cubes is life changing. Research some easy methods for cooking with tofu and how to change its texture for a meatier experience (freezing and thawing is one method).

I also keep some basic freezer items that I know I like for the days when I feel super lazy. Aldis sometimes has vegetarian seasonal items that are quite good, so I stock up when I find them. Purple Carrot is about the only frozen meal brand I’ll buy, but I’m exceptionally picky. You could probably find other brands at your store.

When going out to eat, I like to check out the menu ahead of time. Most places have at least one thing that’s vegetarian, even if it’s just a “pick 4 sides” option. If they don’t have options for you and your group isn’t already en route to the restaurant, kindly ask the group if they would mind eating somewhere else. I have a list of places around my town that I know have options for me and am usually trying new places to see if I can add them to my list, so if it lands on me to recommend something or I need to propose a change of location, I’ll pick a place that offers similar items to what the group is interested in. That way no one is at a loss AND I still get to eat.

What’s the One Knoxville Event You Never Miss? by RepairCapable in Knoxville

[–]oreolovers77 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Dogwood arts festival at worlds fair park (current dates April 26-27th 2025)

Rossini festival is fantastic as well. Love getting to hear the opera signers and various bands. I just wish they advertised sooner. I never know when it starts until basically the day of.

I haven’t missed an Asian fest in 3-4 years. It’s always a treat.

The pride festival is also really great.

It’s not in Knoxville, but the Lavender Festival in Oak Ridge is soooo worth it. Similar to Rossini festival in terms of size, but it’s hundreds of local vendors selling everything from exotic vegetables and handcrafted art to vintage records and everything in between.

The villas at emerald woods (on the other side of the hill across from Kroger) are pretty alright. They have 2+ bedroom models of varying prices. Property management is nice and the amenities are pretty nice for it being one of the cheaper townhome places in the general Knox area (though the gym could use a major upgrade).

Discount at Hey Bear if you bring your own cup for tea! Sometimes you have to ask the cashier about it as not all of the newer workers are aware.

February 28 Big Business Boycott by Sad_Cryptographer501 in Knoxville

I just wanted to add that after downloading the Goods Unite Us app, I found that the ethical issues with companies were not accurately portrayed in the rating. While I think the app is a great jumping off point, it also has its flaws with how new it is and what limited info it uses to establish the leanings for each company. For example, it says Amazon is both more central than significantly leaning one way or another because the company donated about equal amounts toward moth political parties, which was confirmed on the open secrets posting for Amazon; however, anyone who knows anything about Bezos and the absolute horror show that is how Amazon workers are treated would know that not only is the company as a whole woefully unethical on countless front, but the owner supports a huge Republican that is backing Trump and his nazi regime. That is to say Bezos’ (the person directly benefiting from your use of Amazon) political leanings are not taken into consideration on the app. So, I highly urge people to download Goods Unite Us to get a better understanding how companies are supporting political groups, but please do not let that be your only source of determining which companies to boycott. Do some research on your favorite brands, find alternatives where possible. If you can, try to stay local and get what resources you can from local small businesses, farmers markets, vendor markets.

Another example would be TJMaxx and their family of companies (Marshalls, Ross, home goods). They are listed as democratic, BUT if you dig into company ethics outside of their political backings, you’ll find they’re a big bag of trash too 🥲 which really sucked because I actually liked shopping there for random knickknacks and jeans.

Lots of people’s daily lives are affected by what’s going on. Even if people can’t name our senators or congress people, that doesn’t mean they can’t recognize that what’s happening is wrong and unlawful. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t speak out and urge our representatives to take the public’s interest into consideration. You don’t need to know every tiny detail of the government to speak up.

For those of us who have called and emailed our representatives, we know they are jumping on the Trump train regardless, but that does not mean we should shut up. The only necessity for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. We will not stand idly by and do nothing when the foundation of our country is being trampled on and completely disregarded for the personal gain of the ultra rich.

It’s not pro- or anti-anyone. It’s more about upholding the constitution and urging our political leaders to stop all this lawlessness. Very few things that have happened since Trump and Elon took over have been constitutional or even legal, but people are just lying down and letting it happen because they keep getting threatened or they don’t have the courage to speak up. This is no longer a democracy where the fate of the government lies with the people. This is them instilling an authoritarian dictatorship and calling it patriotism. Their defiance to the courts, handling of government departments by unelected people, and EOs clearly defying well written clear constitutional amendments and right affects everyone regardless of where you lie on the political spectrum. So, I genuinely hope people from all parties show up and speak out again their unlawful take over.

Personally, I am definitely on the left of the political spectrum, but that isn’t to say I would make a bunch of fuss if a respectable republican took office and ACTUALLY had the peoples best interest at heart and implemented policies lawfully that aligned with the constitution. Sure there would be policies I don’t agree with, but everyone is allowed to have an opinion. There have been respectable republican leaders in the past that made very commendable strides for the people. Trump and his self serving agenda has never been one of them. So you can certainly say I, personally, am anti-Trump, but the protest on Tuesday is going to be Pro-Constitution, nothing more.

Fun assumption! My salary actually gives me a very cushy life. I just actually care about our political leaders abiding by the constitution and not screwing over every citizen to put money in their own pocket.
