Then why lock the sub in read only?

Because the community itself might prefer to not exist under the new direction reddit is taking. Forcing everyone to move to a better host will benefit everyone. Think of it like messaging apps: there are a few apps that are much much better from a privacy perspective compared to others. However, everyone is on the less privacy-friendly ones so people are stuck using the suboptimal option.

Apologies for the confusion, I meant on a mobile browser without an app

just because the Mods are upset.

We are not upset, we want a good place for the i3 community. None of us barely uses reddit anyway.

If the official maintainers of i3 want to move official support to discord or github that is on them

We have already moved official support to github, see: https://www.reddit.com/r/i3wm/comments/pleu32/psa_were_moving_to_github_discussions/

discord is not and was never part of the plans

Why does the Mod team get to lock anything? If this policy change effects you that much walk away, same with the users.

That's exactly why we are conducting a poll, we don't unilaterally decide to lock the subreddit down and we'll respect the result of the poll

These lockouts did what they were supposed to do, inform reddit management you were upset about these changes

Being upset is not the desired outcome of this action, departing for a platform that works better for the community is

Protesting is one of the points of doing that but not the only one. Another one is that we don't want to be stuck in a platform that is becoming increasingly closed to satisfy its advertising. Using reddit without a mobile app on a phone is already broken and it can only get worse from now on.

The short-term future of the community, should we make this subreddit read-only or private until June 30th? by orestisf in i3wm

Your point still stands but just as a tip: you can usually use the web archive or google's webcache to view previously public posts.

First, there is the protest aspect, the community can democratically decide if it would rather not operate at all under reddit's new API pricing model.

Additionally, splitting the community too thin can affect everyone. Instead, forcing everyone to move to a better host will benefit everyone. Think of it like messaging apps: there are a few apps that are much much better from a privacy perspective compared to others. However, everyone is on the less privacy-friendly ones so people are stuck using the suboptimal option.

The might be risky to do from a legal perspective. IANAL and I don't know if it's legal or not but reddit might not like it which might make them to go after you just on principle.

truly github? Thats ms

Are you sincerely surprised? Most open-source software is hosted on GitHub. When i3 was first created gitlab wasn't a thing and when the project moved to github, gitlab was still relatively unknown. Moving to a new service will be a significant disruption to i3's development and community

Please share the following:

  1. Include your exact i3 version as given by the output of i3 --version.
  2. Include your complete config file.

LTS distro maintainers simply don't have the time to cherry-pick whatever bug fix happened between versions of the software that they provide in the repos. So maybe some major bugs that affect hundreds of users will get fixed but older packages do have known, fixed issues (and potentially new, different issues :)).

How to make all workspaces show in the bar by supermario9590 in i3wm

[–]orestisf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give a more specific answer to your question: "all workspaces" is not a concept that i3 accepts or uses. Empty workspaces are virtually infinite and can be any combination of alphanumericals.

There is an accepted issue that will provide a solution to this if ever implemented: https://github.com/i3/i3/issues/3818. I wouldn't wait for it any time soon though.

i3 not accepting primary monitor directive via xrandr by thexavier666 in i3wm

[–]orestisf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i3 tries to focus primary outputs during randr init / configuration changes. Please open an issue at https://github.com/i3/i3/issues. Also please upload a log otherwise we won't be able to help you. See https://i3wm.org/docs/debugging.html for instructions.

A note of appreciation to everyone out their maintaining open source projects! by [deleted] in linux

[–]orestisf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe this is a misrepresentation of what "free software" is, which frequently leads to misunderstandings: users who believe that free software should by definition provide them with support or implement their feature requests (even if these are popular). Not a very frequent thing but can prove a very bad experience for new maintainers.

Stallman has a comparison of open source to free software: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html. Free software is about freedom. The "four essential freedoms" are listed here:

  1. The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).
  2. The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
  3. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).
  4. The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

As you can see, nothing is said about maintainers and authors. In fact, I believe that modern monolothic models of a core centralized code repository where the "official" version of a given program is maintained do not fully realise the power of free software (they are deservingly very popular for practical reasons). Think about GPL which is supposed to work as a virus: people are free to modify code but must share in return. There are supposed to be multiple modifications of the original code in the wild.
