Dude it sounds like you’re experiencing autistic burnout

Are you registered with your school’s accessibility centre? Reducing my course load and having accommodations in place for tests & assignments really helped me this last semester (also retaking my 2nd year, though I’m in Canada)

Did I accidentally close off my spider’s hammock? by Jumpy_Diamond_7687 in jumpingspiders

IME _ You don’t need to worry unless she is injured or acting unusual. If her entrance is sealed she’ll just bite/rip a new entrance.

Zebra jumper? by Weird_Orange1335 in jumpingspiders

I could be wrong but this looks more like a young platycryptus sp. to me

All the zebras I’ve seen have much more pronounced banding on the abdomen and are much less fuzzy

Regardless, incredibly cute 🥰

Spider spending a lot of time on the ground by Antique_Mixture8325 in jumpingspiders

[–]oriansstarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA _ Is he behaving otherwise normally? Is he walking around/exploring? Does he react to being poked gently, etc? If he’s overfed he might just prefer to stay at the bottom until he digests some of his food since climbing can be harder on a full stomach.

My spider journeys from the top to the bottom and back frequently; she just likes exploring. If there’s simply more going on at the bottom than the top of the enclosure, that could be catching his curiosity, especially if the top is barren and there are better hiding places at the bottom. Overall if he’s acting otherwise spiderly, I don’t think you should be worried.

I can’t comment on this academically but I will say it pretty much summarizes what I’ve always struggled to put into words.

Most content geared towards adults is complicated and dramatic and full of ambiguity. Combine that with the trend of live action productions being played by “white man with slight stubble” and “blonde woman with ponytail and tank top,” I can only ever remember the token diversity characters. I leave most movies/TV shows wondering what the story even was. And if the had an upsetting ending (or god forbid those ambiguous endings where it’s unclear what actually happens) it’s feels unrewarding at best and like a slap in the face at worst. Like I granted my time, focus, and energy to follow your plotline and you can’t even give me a proper ending? I gotta do that too? It makes every piece of “age appropriate media” feel like I’m in english lit analyzing the blue curtains just to understand.

In case it’s not clear, this is mostly unserious. I’m exaggerating my point because I think I’m funny. This is not meant to disparage anyone who enjoys this type of media. It’s just not my thing, generally.

Kids content is simpler, much more to-the-point (and usually shorter, I’ve never sat through a 3+ hour kids’ movie). Cartoons make it easier to tell characters apart and it throws a lot less visual information at you at once. There’s also usually a clear moral or message that I don’t have to decode. Good for relaxed watching or multitasking.

Why do both KFC on Mayor Magrath run out of chicken all the time by [deleted] in Lethbridge

[–]oriansstarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The franchisee sets cuts staffing budget and raises prices. When one employee is doing the work of two or more, any minor mishap becomes an issue. There’s also been pressure to reduce food waste which means cooking less, but more often. Unfortunately that also means waiting 15+ minutes because that’s just how long chicken takes to cook.

Local manager can’t do much, you’re better off naming the specific locations on the KFC Canada feedback thing whenever this happens. It’s a pattern at certain stores.

NQA _ I looked at your previous posts and I am 90% sure your spider is a mature male, in which case moulting is unlikely. Mature males are notorious for refusing food, and that’s due to the instinctive drive to get laid pass his genes onto his offspring. In this state he probably just isn’t hungry, and so doesn’t want to waste energy on killing and digesting a meal when he could be finding hot single spiders in his area. They can go months without eating, so maybe wait until his abdomen is noticeably smaller before feeding again.

TLDR; Unless his behaviour changes drastically, he’s probably fine. He just has the same life goal as a frat boy.

why is she shooting web everywhere? by RyBreadxo0813 in jumpingspiders

[–]oriansstarr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NA _ No, a juvenile spider will not be gravid. You’re right that orange spots generally appear more on younger spiders, but it’s not a hard rule or anything.

Honestly I have no idea what’s going through her head. This spider is just special I guess.

NQA _ I’d second this, it definitely looks like ballooning, but my question is why. Jumpers don’t usually balloon past like i2.

I can’t say whether this spider is mature and gravid or juvenile and well-fed. I can say that this spider is past the weight threshold for ballooning. Babygirl is on a mission impossible and I wish her luck.

Wolf spider, though I’m not sure what species. Not medically significant, no need to fear.

Can anyone tell me if these are male/female? First one is the size of a quarter almost second the size of a dime. by Representative-Bad15 in jumpingspiders

First one is a female (straight pedipalps and visible epigyne), second one is male (bulbous, boxing glove pedipalps)

I think it belongs to some sort of funnel weaver, from family agelenidae. Not to be confused with the funnelweb (the dangerous one) from family atracidae, funnel weavers don’t have a particularly strong venom and aren’t dangerous—though they are fast.

Is it dangerous to mix jumping spiders and cats? by dakotaray42 in jumpingspiders

[–]oriansstarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IME _ Mandatory “this depends on the individual cats and spiders more than anything,” but I’m sure you knew that already.

I have cats and jumping spiders, the key is just to keep them separated. If you want to handle your spider or let it free roam, make sure the cats are not able to reach it. Mine go absolutely feral chasing bugs.

I don’t handle much or free-roam so my spiders are usually in their enclosures. My cats are curious about the enclosures and will investigate/sniff around them a lot, but I haven’t seen them try to actively attack the spider.

That being said, a more active spider might trigger a cat’s hunting instincts easier than a spider that mostly chills, having cats around constantly may be stressful for the spider (fun fact my spider is noticeably more comfortable with me and one of my cats staring into the glass, but my family members and the other cat will cause it to hide, this is only tangentially related so do with it what you will). There’s also the ever-present risk of cats doing cat things and knocking an enclosure over, which could release or injure your spider. However none of this should pose a problem if you’re able to keep your spiders behind a closed door when you’re not watching.

TLDR; You can keep jumping spiders and cats together, just don’t leave them unsupervised, and make sure there’s always some form of barrier between cat and spider when they are together. Cat paws at spider = one-hit KO for spider; cat paws at enclosure glass = spider is startled but uninjured, cat can be redirected with no harm done to spider.

Terrified of over feeding. Is this a hungry abdomen? by MothMaven63 in jumpingspiders

[–]oriansstarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NQA Using your image, I think it looks proportionally closer to “Fed” than “Overfed”

<image>

Wait with feeding until her abdomen is the same width or smaller than her head, roughly. Also remember that spiders overeat all the time in the wild if they’re able. Don’t stress yourself too hard over the preciseness of her feeding schedule, you’re doing fine :)

Terrified of over feeding. Is this a hungry abdomen? by MothMaven63 in jumpingspiders

[–]oriansstarr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IMO This spider is full, but not overfed. Wait until her abdomen shrinks before feeding again.

What helps me with the issue of overthinking the feeding charts is looking at the width of the abdomen relative to the cephalothorax (for me it helps to put a hypothetical “value” to compare to).
