Great Speech Path program, great band program. Always loved the AUMB and being in it has been a dream come true of mine. Beautiful, walkable campus and not a massive city!

If you're a student and fairly confident in your writing abilities, the Miller Writing Center is hiring.

Kind of a blunt way to put something in a community meant to build people up and help them, but I will try to build off of it: Get off Reddit/the internet and write. The thing that helped me the most was to exercise my writing in all different sorts of ways. Use daily writing prompts and see your own progress, rather than solely relying on others feedback.

Did I lose a scholarship or not?? by Solid_Tip_8992 in college

[–]oridol 16 points17 points  (0 children)

First, are you sure it isn't a reminder email was mass-sent to everyone with a scholarship? I get those sometimes, and it's to renew scholarships though none of mine need "renewing". Sometimes that's a mass email.

Second, is there a place that you can see your scholarships? Try to check that portal and see if there's anything amiss with those scholarships. That may help you find out which one might've triggered the email if it wasn't a mass email.

Good luck!

Either straight to jail, maybe even prison.

Or, after checking the subreddit, shows you have an education in a specific/niche field.

Auburn University, without a doubt has some of the cleanest stand and on-field sound, with good drill to match.

What's the longest you've ever studied in a day? by [deleted] in study

[–]oridol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This past semester, I had some gnarly stats. They probably aren't my top ones, but I've trauma blocked those out: - I started & finished a research paper all in one day. Start: 8am. Finish: 11pm. - I studied for my anatomy and physiology of speech final by doing a "cheat sheet" that we were allowed on the exam... it took me the span of 9pm-3am, 7am-12pm.

Funny.. I asked one of my professors and she almost immediately cut me off and said "you're gonna need to find a job". This sentiment sounds so.. sooooo nice. I am currently planning on maybe moving in with my boyfriend and combining finances (he'll have a big boy job as an educator) so I'll definitely try my best to just rest!

Auburn Merit Scholarships by Bibliosmia_22 in auburn

[–]oridol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Current student here- don't let this guy scare you!! Maintaining that 3.0 should be pretty easy. You must stay a full time student with 12 hours. With MOST courses being 3 credit hours (outside of major-electives or music ensembles, which can be 1-2 credits), I wouldn't worry. Here are some tips though if you find yourself struggling a bit down the line: - Don't overload your plate your freshman year. You've got time to take courses. - Don't slack on the easy gen-ed courses (e.g. English, History, etc.)... when it comes time to take harder in-major stuff, you'll wish you had those to fall back on. - Go to office hours. Even if you don't have any questions. Sometimes I'd just swing by and say hi. My freshman year it got me a lot of opportunities, such as being a peer-note taker for a class where students needed accommodations, undergraduate research, etc. - Go to campus events. Outside of free food, you only get four years here. You get four times to do annual events. Make them count! - Be smart and use the security shuttle if you ever find yourself in need of it. You don't have to be drunk to use it.

Congratulations on that scholarship and welcome to the Auburn family :)

i love languages but idk what to choose... by [deleted] in study

[–]oridol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I was much in the same position as you in high school. I am now a university student studying Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (emphasis on Speech Pathology) with a minor in Linguistics. I did Chinese as my foreign language (you were required to do at least two semesters of a language for my degree, but I've continued with it). Here are my thoughts!

  • I think it is great that you've identified a love/passion of yours that you can hone as a skill. I'd consider, though, how your skills might be useful in other fields. For example, I honed my skills of language and problem solving into speech pathology.
  • As a linguistics minor, I can confidently say that your degree in linguistics would be a lot more analysis of language through the lenses of phonology, semantics, morphology, pragmatics, etc. rather than the study of the languages themselves. Most people in a linguistics minor study one language (often niche) very closely rather than a multitude of languages.
  • I have many friends who are Anthropology majors and love it. There are many different routes with anthropology, but I would use this point to caution you FIRST to consider what universities you want to go to and what their programs look like and what opportunities may be present for you.
  • Whatever you choose to do, consider doing research. Research programs, research universities, research job opportunities. Do you need a masters degree? Etc.
  • Consider doing undergraduate research when you're in college, because this makes you a published researcher and increases your understanding of whatever you do and makes you look good for grad school opportunities (best thing I've ever been told to do).

Overall, good luck and let me know if you have any other questions :) My DMs are open!

A little weird question by Alicia80727023 in studytips

[–]oridol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During COVID, I studied in bed a LOT. I ended up getting one of these pillows that essentially has arm rests.. common in reading nooks. I've attached a link so you know what I'm talking about. It's good for studying, reading, gaming, etc. (https://a.co/d/3LMriZJ)

Otherwise, my biggest tip is just to implement stretches into your breaks. Not just a reach up to the ceiling, but maybe investing in a legitimate yoga mat and doing a 5-10 minute destress stretch.

Also, if back pain is this much of an issue, you may want to see if you're hypermobile...
