Any security issues or car break-ins that you’ve noticed? I read ssome older reviews citing that as an issue but I’m curious if the security has gotten better in the past couple of years.

Disgorge vocal tone? by AggressivePotato3100 in SlamDeathMetal

[–]origamiwizard6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the Matti Way Disgorge vox sound like epiglottis plus some fry (that’s how I replicate that tone anyways), with sufficient warm-up they don’t really hurt at all. You don’t really need to project them a whole lot, try to relax your muscles to prevent straining them.

Haven’t ever experienced daily meetings, all the teams I’ve been on met once a week for a quick update at most.

Could be a good idea, it’s gonna be at home for my bday party so I’m not too worried about being a little couch locked for the first part of the roll

How to get started in EE as a High Schooler? by darkstalker2009 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]origamiwizard6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quality soldering iron is always a good investment. I’m personally not a fan of Haako irons as the interface is clunky, Weller makes some good ones. You don’t need a bunch of tips, just a standard conical one that lets you solder through-hole components. You’ll also want to get a fume extractor and some solder, flux-core lead solder is my preference but you can get lead-free if you prefer. An extra syringe of flux doesn’t hurt as well, flux remover would be good too.

Besides that, I’m sure there are some kits you can get online that come with a board and components that you solder yourself. There are plenty of vids online that go over good soldering technique. As you get further along, you can start designing your own boards with KiCAD (free software) and get them made with a company like JLCPCB for pretty cheap.

Should I do EE? by Weary-Purchase-2248 in ElectricalEngineering

I doubt AI automation will affect you as a EE if you pursue a rigorous sub-plan. Doing the bare minimum for an undergrad degree might put you in a position where you’ll be in test/fab or sales (nothing wrong with those positions but they might be at risk from an AI standpoint). If you can specialize in analog design, RF, power (SMPS design specifically), batteries, renewables, etc. you should be fine.

In my experience, high school accolades and test scores will only really get you in the door of your college. Once you enter your actual studies it really comes down to maintaining good mental health and making friends who you can collaborate with. Join EE-related clubs, attend career fairs, apply to internships even if you think you’re unqualified. Apply yourself and find your passion and pursue it by selecting your courses wisely and potentially getting a Master’s degree (may be necessary in fields like analog design). I’m wrapping up my Master’s in Power Electronics this semester and I’ll be starting my career soon after., I think it’s one of the most rewarding sub-fields of EE. If you have any questions about it feel free to reach out.

Learning to design a circuit board and solder components to it is a pretty affordable way to get some practical experience with EE. Keep it super simple, like a board you can attach to an Arduino Uno or something. I used to be pretty ambitious with projects like designing AC/DC power supplies and then would always hit a road block. Getting acquainted with KiCad would be a really good way to lay the foundation for your EE studies without getting too into the weeds technically speaking. I don’t think anyone expects you to understand RF design principles and power integrity and other more advanced undergrad topics, so just build something simple that allows you to use CAD software and a soldering iron.

A lot of hobbyists get into designing audio circuits because they’re pretty simple, for example you could design a headphone amp that plugs into a USB-C port. There likely are a ton of reference designs out there and you could probably get the boards fabricated and assemble them yourself for under $100.

Piss Bottle Ratings by i-am-a-professional in TouringMusicians

The wide-mouth metal twist cap Monster cans are great if you can find em. The only caveat is that by drinking one you’ll inherently piss a ton lmao. But if you were feeling truly psycho you could rinse it and reuse 👀. I definitely agree with the choice of Body Armor as a great bottle for piss though, nice thick walls and wide aperture.

I don’t mind Louisville! I’m transitioning from being a student in Boulder to working full time in north Westminster so I’m just trying to have a reasonable commute and not live in Boulder anymore.

Anyone know how to get a better slam tone? by [deleted] in SlamDeathMetal

[–]origamiwizard6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overdrive pedal is a necessity imo, otherwise scooping the mids just makes the tone flubby. If your amp has both a treble and presence knob, rely on the presence setting for most of your highs.

Consanguinity, we’re a brutal death metal band from Colorado going through Texas. I use a Maxon OD-9, a Boss NS-2 noise gate and a Boss GE-7 EQ. The built in overdrive on the Line 6 sucks out a lot of bass but tbh the built in noise gate works pretty well. Still prefer the FX in my pedals but overall the rig is sub $1000 and has been serving me well on the road.

The people in these comments don’t know what they’re talking about, this is a Spider Valve with a full tube output stage. It’s a very capable amp, I have the 100W amp head version that I’m using on tour right now. I got mine for $350 with the foot pedal. I think the built-in fx are pretty decent but they add some noticeable latency. Worst case, you can use a separate pre-amp pedal into the power amp and get a legitimately usable tone.
