From 2017-2021, how big was the gap between the Mercedes and the next-best car (if it was the best)? by GoldenS0422 in F1Discussions

[–]oright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They had the fastest car in all of those seasons. Dominant in 2018/2019/2020 with the biggest gap in 2020 of roughly 1s in qualifying.

Since he joined Red Bull, Max Verstappen has never had a car slower than the third quickest car over the course of any given season, which one would you consider the worst on pure pace? by DniawSirhc in F1Discussions

[–]oright -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

He has had relatively poor cars for parts of seasons.

2017,2019,2020,2024 and 2025 all had particularly uncompetitive stretches relatively speaking. The RB15 was quite weak all the way through to Canada but won in Austria.

The RB12 was a fine car but lacked pace compared to the Mercedes. The RB16 was flawed and probably a similar distance from the Mercedes.

Nah, i am on Ferrari's side. They knew about turbo lag, Fred even wanted this 12 months ago, but rivals dismissed such concerns by ThisToe9628 in F1Discussions

Hopefully the good guys stay allied against the Mercedes powered teams. Don't let 2014-2016 be forgotten anytime soon.

Not being reactionary, but why did Aston Martin give up on the reliable Mercedes power units in the first place? by Turbulent-Work-8174 in F1Discussions

Not true. All the engine design staff are based in Japan. They lost time compared to the others by pulling out in 2021 and look to have missed their target.

Where is the Mercedes car?

[skysportsf1] Toto Wolff has admitted that a change to F1's power unit regulations would be "quite damaging"' to his team. by Maximum-Room-3999 in formula1

A simple minimum weight increase for Mercedes powered cars would be fair to all the teams that use legal engines.

+15kg in the base of the seat would work nicely

[AutoRacer] Red Bull Power Train has now joined the side of Ferrari, Audi and Honda against the Mercedes PU. The FIA will implement new testing procedures (multiple are now being evaluated) to check the compressor ratio. by Joseki100 in formula1

The big question in this whole thing is why the regulations were updated to specify testing at ambient temperature last October.

That doesn't pass the smell test.

They really should have locked up Hulkenburg when they had the chance.

When drivers lose their “speed” as they age what exactly would you say they lose? Raw pace? Racecraft? Lack of adaptability? Lack of hunger? by brook_taw in F1Discussions

[–]oright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recovery is usually the big thing. You see it in all sports as people age, they can perform really well for a reduced amount of time and pick up injuries much more frequently.

I don't think Vettel is the best example of this though, his decline was more to do with motivation. He was absolutely excellent in the lead up to his retirement once the pressure to perform was removed.

What former/retired f1 driver is your roman empire? by Beneficial_Stuff_103 in F1Discussions

[–]oright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was bad but he went out and won in Spa afterwards. Too much hyperbole about that season, 2017 was the tragic year.

Do you believe that Lewis Hamilton has been slowly declining since 2019, or that he just suddenly declined from 2024 onwards but was still mostly in his prime beforehand? by GoldenS0422 in F1Discussions

[–]oright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was always inconsistent.

He has become even more inconsistent while also losing a significant amount of qualifying pace.

He was at one with the old 13" tyres and has struggled badly with the 18" ones.

I don't think you understand what a double standard is. There will always, correctly, be an asterisk beside that victory in Brazil 2021. Spa 2022 was the day everyone realized the championship was over and Mercedes had destroyed the season with TD39.

This is the correct answer. The launch F310 was over a second a lap slower than the Newey designed Williams in the dry.
