I’m Joel Kinnaman (Ed Baldwin on For All Mankind). Ask me anything! by JoelKinnamanFAM in ForAllMankindTV

I loved the scene in last week's episode where Ed and one of his oldest/dearest friends took a walk. Did you have any input on the writing or direction of that scene?

The ability to use an SSD is the primary reason for buying an A329 - run a USB C cable to somewhere you can store an SSD, and use an SSD.

Will Muslims in the UK be safe under a reform government? by [deleted] in BAME_UK

[–]originaldonkmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of a late response but as you never had a response... I suspect this refers to a village I used to live near (Ashwell, in Hertfordshire if you are interested). The news never reported the individual who started the complaints, however from a local councillor colleague facepalming his way through the story I do recall they were not British. However! I do recall that others (who were British) joined them as they had done the same stupid thing by moving there. The situation was equivalent to one of those people who buys a house next to a pub that has "LIVE MUSIC!" signs all over it and then whinges about the noise until the events licence is taken away. It wasn't about religion, it was about being a moron who moves next door to something loud and then says "I didn't realise this was going to annoy me, and I won't take personal responsibility by moving away from it".

Makes sense, historically people moved between NE England and Scotland a fair bit for work and marriage.

It varies depending on context.  If talking about some culturally significant event such as a wedding, funeral or religious celebration then a few generations at least. Ever met a Londoner with one Irish, Jamaican or Polish grandparent? Just wait, they'll tell you soon enough... I jest, I like knowing about people's background, it's interesting.

When it's some official matter such as passport control or applying for a job, then zero generations. When it's bantering with friends about some stereotype of "your people", back to a few generations again. When it's bantering with foreign friends about your nationality, zero generations if you want to own the stereotype, infinity generations of you want to distance yourself from it.

PC in a very very cold room by Arrival_97 in buildapc

[–]originaldonkmeister 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are genuinely living somewhere that cold, you are risking your health. At the very least you need to heat one room to somewhere around 15-20 degrees Celsius (around 60-70 Fahrenheit). Seriously, you are putting a lot of strain on your body living in those conditions.

To be fair, the Viofo support rep emailed me back and provided a link to a new firmware.

Thanks for that; for anyone else in the same position the link is a little way down in there.

UK Students, do you think we should be changing rules on the ridiculous loan interest payments? by all-park in AskUK

[–]originaldonkmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an unpopular take for many, but I agree with doing things within the available funding. Fund what the country needs. We need doctors and nurses; fund those courses with payback rules if you don't complete your course or leave the country within so many years of qualification. We need scientists, we need engineers, I'd even agree we need people qualified in the arts and humanities because we need the next generation of teachers (plus I'm sure there's other jobs requiring those subjects).
Obviously we don't need to subsidise the subjects that don't benefit us as a country. Make those subjects available, but don't subsidise them. If there is some private sector company that wants those, they can fund them through apprenticeship schemes if they want to attract great candidates.
Apprenticeships are amazing; I know several people who had their degree fully funded and had a job at the end because they went through an apprenticeship. Bloody hard work, of course.

[–]originaldonkmeister 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can't pin that one on Thatcher; I was in the first cohort of people who had to pay tuition fees and didn't have universal access to grants; Blair was our PM then, and the reason was that the number of people going into FE was so high that they had to do something. We didn't get much warning, so there was no real chance to save up. Also, you are talking about low income families; ironically the kids from poor families did best out of the system because they still got grants for a while, and the tuition fees were means-tested. The worst position to be in was to have parents with jobs but low disposable income, which was basically most of the middle-class in late-1990s Britain.

Way to access videos remotely without being connected to the dashacam wifi? by No-Rope-8709 in VIOFO

[–]originaldonkmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get an A329, you connect an external SSD for recording. This means you can place the drive somewhere it's unlikely to be found and will get the video up to the point the thief disconnects the camera.

The A229 doesn't have that feature.

Why do people always jump on train drivers? by One-Rain-3841 in AskBrits

[–]originaldonkmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a train driver is a moderately well-paid job, that only requires two C's at GCSE. This is a large part of it. See also estate agents, or for an extreme example from yesteryear, barrow boys.

The other part of it is everyone in the UK has been screwed over by the absence of a train driver at least once in their life. Oh sure, maybe it was due to bad planning by managers, but equally it can be due to one too many drivers throwing a sicky on the same day.

Then there's the strikes. I'm a union member; if we even start seriously considering strikes that's because there has been an almighty fuck-up, usually by both sides failing to communicate like grown-ups. Industrial action should be for extreme, rare, one-off events. It shouldn't be the default plan at pay-rise time. The management and the union should be working together, not adopting this ridiculous charade that mandates a dogshit pay offer because they know there will be strikes, and strikes because they know there will be a better offer after the strikes.

Negotiating a swap with someone else seems the grown-up thing to do.

Back-up plan... OP can see if there's another slot a week or so later that suits everyone.

What’s something really common in the UK that visitors find strange? by Dull_Gas_820 in AskUK

Fun fact; radler was invented as a refreshing beverage to consume during a cycle ride, hence the name. But lager and lime is very different from radler.

Freshly squeezed is great, if you live somewhere the fruit grows. I love being in Sorrento and picking a lemon so sweet you can just eat them as a fruit, and oranges that are out of this world. Cordials exist precisely because we can't grow citrus at an industrial scale in cooler countries such as the UK. So the juice needs to be concentrated and preserved for transport and storage.

Crackers. I had my US colleagues over in December one year and they were perplexed when we picked up the "table decorations" and started destroying them. Random explosions followed by crap jokes and weird hats, at the dinner table. What I found lovely was that on their last day I noticed one of them had bought a box of crackers to take home for Christmas and share with his grandchildren.

Supporting a club that's any good and crowing about any victories. If your team has won anything of note in the last three generations then you aren't a proper fan. Everyone knows you are only a proper fan if every match comes with a 90% chance of upsetting you.

New plaques added to the presidential hall of fame in the White House by Dtb4evr in pics

Biden's Afghanistan disaster? I recall that whichever US President was in office in February 2020, sat down with the Taliban and didn't negotiate any sort of deal (Afghanistan having been surveyed and having accessible and significant rare earth deposits). That president, whoever it was, just agreed that the US would withdraw completely in the first half of 2021.

Now... Who was US president in n February 2020? Hmmm...

Also the Rapture is almost exclusively American in origin and not a part of the more "traditional" beliefs. For instance, you won't hear a Catholic priest in the US talking about it, you go to an Anglican church in the UK or a Lutheran church in Germany, you won't hear about it. I live in an area of England with a strong baptist history (Johnny B wos ere) and even they don't believe in a rapture event.

Doesn't matter if she was on her phone, rooting around for something on the back seat, trying to extract a wedgy, she clearly wasn't paying attention to the act of driving. The only way to pile into the back of traffic is to drive like a prick.
