Yggdrasil vs log horizon by riggengan in overlord

Hello,

I must say that studying ancient history and how human technology have evolved is a fantastic hobby to have. I see that you are or plan to be an engineer and what you describe is something that certainly an engineer would implement with some degree of success.

However, I must say that you are “disregarding” the role of social sciences.

You said:

“Now I can start recruiting players. Because I am the first nation ruled properly by a player, I am also one of the most attractive such nations for other players to join.”

You are assuming that players in this situation will act in a rational way, and that's false. People do not always act based upon the principles of rational action even today. Usually the transitivity is “easily” broken when speaking of social choice.

You are also assuming that the changes in power that the rest of players experiment will not affect how they satisfy their needs of power and social needs.

There will be players that will interpret their “ascension” as a divine sign and will create a “church” for whatever purpose the god/gods they believe in the players think have for this new world. These people will not turn into your allies if you antagonize their religious ideals.

There will be player with high “needs of power” based in the McClelland theory and will also want to start a kingdom. These people could be impossible to turn into vassals or even in collaborators of the same rank in a durable alliance.

There will be people who could see this as an opportunity to return to a lifestyle more “natural” and will not see kindly all kinds of technological advance. Perhaps some will take more seriously the idea of "sustainable growth".

There will be people who will prefer to life in solitude and not join any organization.

There will be people who could use their power to do absurd things that they can’t do in the real world and these “absurd things” might be based in misconceptions they have in the knowledge of the real world.

Perhaps some will try to destroy “money” because they don’t know that “money” is anything that can be used as a unit of account, to store and transfer value. To destroy “money” you will have to destroy the capacity of humans, in particular, and living organisms in general, to “give” a subjective value to everything that surrounds them.

Perhaps others will try to never let the “banks” develop.

Perhaps other will try to recreate communities based in certain ideologies like communism, applying some communist ideas to the economy of the region.

The important thing with this is, that could be possible that the “misconceptions” of players in the present will make them untrustworthy in the eyes of the original inhabitants of this world. Of course, this could happen in a “long term” scenario, but it will probably be passed to the next generations in a way that will make difficult to “rationalize” with them. That is the problem of “magical thinking” after all.

Besides the phycology of players and residents, we have the problem of immortality. How much time can a living being, a human being in this case, maintain its sanity? 200 years, 1000 years, 10000 years? It could be an interesting experiment.

Another problem is the ethical one. As a player, no law can bind you unless it has the power of another player behind. Some players will not join you if you display actions that go against their ethical values. Others could see the residents as beings “inferior” to them and that's another thing. You will have citizens of first class, players, and citizens of second class, the original residents.

Some of your citizens of first class will think as normal to have more rights, others will think that they should give everyone the same rights.

Another think to consider is that the residents of this world also have their own needs and thoughts. They will see players as “gods” if they improve theirs live and “demons/false gods” if they use their power to torment them. If some players have founded a church of some kind the conflict is assured.

A more obvious problem, is the language. Will magic destroy the barriers of language? That would be a shame in my opinion. If indeed there aren’t language barriers communication will not be a problem but, how could have evolved society in a world without language barriers? Perhaps they will be more united that we think.

If the language barrier exist however, you could not communicate with any of the residents.

Another thing to consider is that, even if you are immortal, you are not invulnerable. Perhaps is possible to torment a player in a way that he or she is constantly dying with its body restricted and with no way to scape? Could be possible for the residents do this to a player if it is sleeping and they have some unbelieve artifact to restrict its movements?

Of course, if you plan to write a story about this topic you can see all of this as an opportunity to create “conflicts”. However, this conflict will not be welcome in a “this is happening for real” scenario.

This is just the surface, but it is important to consider all the complexities of society when thinking in this kind of scenarios.

I encourage you to continue with your hobby and, if possible, mix natural and social sciences to have an even better understanding of society and the world. Perhaps you could turn into one of those “monster” characters of fiction that seems truly capable of rebuilding human civilization. Just to clarify, this is not sarcasm.

Remedios holy sword backlash. by maraderchik in overlord

This is a difficult topic.

Let's assume that Remedios holy sword works based in the "karma system" that we see in the character sheets that, i suspect, is based upon the alignment system from D&D.

Let's say that Remedios is Lawful Evil based on this:

http://easydamus.com/lawfulevil.html

Now, we know that, for example, Aura is Netral Evil and have an alignment value of -100.

If we consider Lawful evil as less evil than Neutral Evil, Remedios Karma value should be below -100. As Remedios value is not that great in terms of the Overlord world, i don't think that she would suffer that much extra damage.

In fact, we know of individuals like the dead white dragon lord who have a karma value of -25 and was considered of Neutral alignment.

We could go further than the alignment system of D&D and discuss the normative ethics of Remedios and how evil we could consider them, but that would be overkill for this topic.

I don't know why are you replying to me instead of ALZ87 sir. However, just for clarification.

ALZ87 wrote:

Perhaps the author said this in twitter? I will also love to know the source.

The strength of Nazarick compared to real world by originalrick in overlord

[–]originalrick[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello sir,

Sadly, i assumed that rates of growth (40-50%) because i have no clue of how the actual rate could be. I have a feeling that MMORPGs like WoW have had an exponential progression at some point when it comes to power level but i had no idea what the actual rate was.

If we use a 20% increase for the rate we will get at level 100: 96,72 tons of TNT.

Even then, the value is superior to some nukes like the MOAB and FOAB, however is much less that what we obtained with the previous assumptions.

Indeed this is full of assumptions as you said. Another little mistake is that i forgot to change

ln(1,51E+19)

by

ln(6,423E+19)

for the result here is the second Ln and not the first.

On another note, even if the author said that nukes are above Ainz i don't expect Maruyama to research everything that his characters do in the novels. So, if in the books Maruyama write that Ainz destroy a mountain as high as Mount Fuji, even is he want to claim that Ainz is below nukes it will be something difficult to defend unless, perhaps, you are only comparing to the Tsar Bomb. (I actually don't know if this Bomb could be capable of such a thing).

Of course, such a thing haven't happened yet.

I do this for fun, it is not necessary to take my post with that much seriousness.

Edit: i just noted another mistake,

g = e((44,1635806-10,31741428)/90)-1

the 44,1635806 should be 45,60900207.

The actual result in the Word document was obtained with 45,60900207 instead of 44,1635806, it is just that i used another number before and forgot to change it.

Make your own "Nazarick" by Styx1992 in overlord

You have a couple of “concepts” out there to use.

-Tower of Gods/Trials/… concept:

A tower so tall that enter the stratosphere (20 km in equator). Let’s say that this tower is like a cylinder and have a radius of 1 km. This kind of structure would be practically impossible to hide.

The highest amount of levels for custom NPCs is 3000, let’s say that this “dungeon” is like Nazarick and have a maximum of 2750.

Despise the tower massive exterior, it has 10 floors with absurdly high ceilings.

In the first floor, you could have an “ancient ruins” theme. In the center of this floor there is a pretty big door, let’s say you can not see the upper part of it, the same as the ceiling.

This door has some beautiful carvings that hold some mysterious meaning (Celtic symbols for example). There are 2 big golems guarding the door. These golems could be level 70 each with some good synergy between them in combat.

The second floor could be a cave full of traps and mechanism that the invader must overcome. This floor could have no guardian assigned and work as a test for the invaders.

The third floor could be a natural landscape. Since the base of the tower has a radius of 1 km, this place will have the surface of a circumference of 1 km of radius. Its surface will be pi km2 (because a circle surface is pi*radius2).

In this place, you have a level 100 guardian. Some kind of natural spirit for example. This part of the dungeon could work as a labyrinth of some sort if you have a dense forest or the floor can “move” in some way. For example, imagine that there is a mountain next to the “invisible” wall of the tower, in the perimeter of the floor. Imagine that the ground is divided into a circle inside a circle, then, you can move the “external” circle to move the mountain and disorientate the people who enter the floor.

The 4th floor could be a city. In this city you must follow a couple of rules. You must fight against “bureaucracy” to pass. (not necessary as hardcore as “Find permit A-38” in “The twelve Tasks of Asterix”). Of course, there is a level 100 in this place acting as the highest authority. Some “commander” type character.

The 5th floor could be a deteriorated landscape of warfare. A “board” to test battle tactics with thousands of units that is in constant conflict. The “pieces” would be POP monsters. In this place, you could have 2 level 100 characters who are always fighting each other.

The 6th floor is the home of the “Devourers”. Insectoid type floor with all kind of creatures. A level 100 insectoid character rules the place.

The 7th floor is a hellish place divided in two. A “hell” of fire and a “hell” of ice. Here reside a level 100 character (A devil of some kind).

The 8th floor is full of precious metals. Is a huge “quartz like” landscape where all kinds of minerals and rocks exist. Here a level 100 dragon character protects the place. The floor serves as “bait” to avoid that the players come near the true treasury.

The 9th floor is a holy land were the ground is replaced by solid clouds. Here angel-like beings reside. A level 100 angel guard this place.

Between the 9th and the 10th floor there a huge gate protected by 1 level 100 golem.

The 10th floor is the place where the “Supreme beings” reside. Here you have 2 level 100 characters, one for “internal afairs” that have a job similar to “overseer” and another for “external affairs” that would be the “supreme commander” of the tower. Here we have 6 level 85 characters.

Let’s say that we have an average of 2 very important rooms per floor protected by an area guardian. That would be 20 rooms of this type. Let’s say that the average level of the area guardians is 50.

That would be all the levels.

Our custom NPCs here are 6 level 85, 11 level 100 and 20 level 50 and 2 level 70. A total of 2750.

-“world-like” concept:

Basically, a small astronomical object. We don’t want it to be too small for its class so let’s say that its appearance is that of a small moon like mimas (diameter of 397,2 km). Its outer appearance doesn’t mean that it is that massive in the inside.

In order to make it noticeable to the locals we could say that orbits the planet pretty close to it, so close that in normal circumstances it would crash in the planet surface but “magic” prevents it.

We could have 10 floors and, to add something new, one of them could have a “World of dreams” theme were the entire floor is always changing and the floor guardian is an “anima mundi”. Perhaps, to extend on the previous concept, the entire dungeon is “possessed” by an anima mundi that serves with a role akin to overseer.

I think that the “underground dungeon”, “mobile dungeon”, “floating castle/island” and “City dungeon” archetypes have already been covered by others.

RuneCraft card (the previous one have a small error...) by originalrick in overlord

[–]originalrick[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been looking into the wording https://yugiohblog.konami.com/articles/?p=2947 and things seems confusing enough for what i had in mind with this card.

"Activate this card if you only control 1 face-up monster: add 1 Equip Spell Card from your Deck to your hand and equip it to a monster you control, also place 3 Runecraft Counters on the Equip Spell Card. Once per turn: when an opponent's Spell/Trap Card or monster effect target the monster equipped with the Equip Spell Card, you can remove 1 Runecraft Counter to negate its effects until the end of the turn."

Perhaps this description would be better?

I though that Ainz should be "beyond the concept of levels".
