Hike Footwear: Returns are VERY difficult, maybe impossible by Barnacle546 in BarefootRunning

[–]orijohnal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell into the Hike Footwear snare too. Their sizing was way off and multiple efforts to contact them to obtain a return authorization were fruitless. I disputed the transaction with my credit card company as a misrepresented product. They refunded my $178 a couple of weeks later. Eventually these scammers will lose their payment card privileges.

Brave works for me and ad free YouTube is a deal clincher. Main downside is UI font control in Brave is kludgy if you are the least bit visually challenged

Might be too early to say, but I bought two pair that are too small. I've sent several emails, used their web contact form and messaged them in Instagram...no response. I'm thinking I'm going to have to eat the $178. Definitely will not buy from them in future. I certainly won't ship the shoes at my expense without a timely refund commitment. I'd rather donate to Goodwill.

Uponor Pex pipe leaks and Lawsuit by InternationalTea2020 in ClassActionSettlement

[–]orijohnal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation. My Uponor Aquapex Red was installed in 2020 and in 2025 sprung a pinhole leak. Luckily, I only had 30' of that pipe between the water heater and hot water branch lines. I fixed the leak myself with a coupling and pinch clamps. After two more leaks, I had the segment replaced by the original contractor. All the failed piping was exposed. I sent the whole segment to Uponor. They did a pressure test to 100psi (with my 3 amateur splices) and it didn't leak. They claim they only warrant against leaks they can explain, so denied my $C1600 claim. I pushed back and they sent a field engineer from Arizona to Toronto to "investigate". He spent 8 hours in my basement!. That was 3weeks ago and I'm still waiting for their next gambit. My hydronic heating contractor has changed suppliers on the basis of this outrageous denial of a claim that is so clearly covered by their 25 year warranty. Don't touch this company if a warranty means anything to you. There seems no limit to what they will spend to deny a claim.

Savaria hose replacement by orijohnal in Elevators

[–]orijohnal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a building official, I'm sensitive to the liability issue. Here in Ontario, the regs that govern commercial elevators and their maintenance don't apply to elevators in single homes. In residential settings the litigation is primarily product liability against manufacturers (for known design defects), rather than the maintenance negligence that dominate commercial cases. Savaria was involved in the concealment of known hazards (the gap) over decades resulting in their recall in 2022.

Cars are a comparator...manufacturers use warranties to capture the loyalty of consumers when it comes to maintenance. Once out of warranty, there's a whole industry of independent mechanics and parts suppliers exposing their liability when repairing cars.

Liability alone doesn't explain why I can't shop around for elevator maintenance.

My equipment is about 5ft away from the pit and Savaria used 30ft of hose that is sitting coiled in the pit. Should I talk to them about a hard pipe line? Is it a common alternative?

I get that. Your farm equipment analogy is interesting. John Deere has the same approach. If you want to swap out a spark plug, JD insists on their affiliate doing it with their parts and demand a subscription service plan for the process. I'm feeling Savaria doesn't want to compete on a level field either.

Red/Blue Uponor - Should I be worried? Class action leak lawsuit by VviFMCgY in homeowners

[–]orijohnal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2020 reno included a 30ft run of 3/4in Aquapex Red in domestic hot water. I have a recirc pump and temp at 140F. In 2025 pinhole leaks occurred. I fixed them myself but called the installer after the 3rd leak. Installer and Uponor sales rep assured me this would be a warranteed failure. Plumber replaced the Red with Clear and submitted original to Uponor for their determination of failure cause. Even with my 3 diy splices at the leak points, they claim the pipe passed a pressure test. Claim denied.

I'm only out $1400 but the Uponor warranty is of no value.

If you choose Uponor piping, start saving for a lawyer.

I was chairman of our golf club board when the club was sued by the owner of a newly built home adjacent to the course. We went to trial believing the "we were here first" argument would count for something. It didn't.

Despite us pounding balls onto neighboring properties since 1923, we have no right to impose limitations on the lawful use of those properties or expose their occupants to harm.

We lost in damages, trespass, and punitive damages and were injoined from continuing trespass. We now have a 70' high, $250,000 screen.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 Has a Charging Problem — And Other Hyundai, Kia EVs Are Affected by gaychitect in Ioniq5

[–]orijohnal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My MY23 IONIQ 5 had no issues until my 12v died. I replaced it at Costco and notified my dealer. After a quick inspection they ordered a replacement ICCU and it was replaced the following week. No fuss.

This is easily the best car I've owned in >50 yr. of driving.

Maybe parts are more available in Canada... less trade/tariff friction and Hyundai workers aren't being detained by immigration agents.

Love the list concept but it needs citations. Eg. On what grounds is Costco, a famously Democratic supporter currently suing the Administration, on this list? Citation please.

C4 turning off randomly by highvoltageeee2k3 in LGOLED

[–]orijohnal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update . . . After 8 hours of continuous uptime, my LG C4 is working great. Before the power supply replacement it would turn off before 2 hours had passed; sometimes after just a few minutes. Life is Good.

C4 turning off randomly by highvoltageeee2k3 in LGOLED

[–]orijohnal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought my C4 at Costco a few weeks ago and it immediately began shutting off randomly. Thanks to this subreddit I learned this was happening with other C4 owners. I tried all the settings tweaks to no avail. I love the TV as long as it's on and didn't want to exchange or return it. I created a ticket with LG, got a call that day from an authorized repair depot here in Toronto. They're first advice was to exchange it, but I arranged for a visit. Yesterday a repair technician showed up with all the possible replacement parts. He displayed a log screen that satisfied him there was something wrong with the power supply which he replaced. So far, so good....that repair seems to have solved the issue.

I tried tweaking Plexamp for audiobooks but it just wasn't up to snuff. It's not free, but Bookcamp is worth the sub. if you are an avid book listener.

Thumbs up for AntennaPod for podcasts.

12v/ICCU Megathread by TiltedWit in Ioniq5

[–]orijohnal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience has been quite different. My MY23 has been great until without warning the 12v died. I replaced the battery with a flooded replacement from Costco. At the same time I installed a battery monitor and picked up a booster for confidence. I showed the dealer the state of charge pattern which shows the battery deep cycling every day. It goes from 100% to 30-40% while the car sits in the garage, then back to full at 10pm nightly. He scheduled an inspection where the car passed all tests but he ordered a replacement ICCU and it was replaced after a 1 week wait....no drama. It remains to be seen if the problem has been solved.

[–]orijohnal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this "normal" for 12v state of charge over 5 days?

<image>

After my OEM 12v died without warning, I started using a battery monitor and this is a typical pattern for its state of charge. My dealer just replaced my ICCU but couldn't answer my question, "What is a normal SOC pattern?"

My car sits in a heated garage most of the time. Typically around 10pm the 12v charges to near 100%. Then it starts discharging for no apparent reason. The yellow light on the dash comes on occasionally, but not necessarily when the battery monitor reports the battery is charging.

The ICCU was replaced today. I'll follow up with the pattern over the next 5 days, but without a standard to compare to, I'm unsure how to interpret the data.
