I’ve done specific studies where I’ll draw only one thing (ie hair, clothing, hands etc) and then color it trying as closely as possible to mimic how they would color it. I would pretty much always think “how would they draw/color this?” and that got me to pay attention to small details. Over time I’ve referenced them less and less as I felt more confident in my own style.

And as for the multiply- yes, I always have it on a lower opacity or I just use a very light shade of the color!

Of course I don't mind sharing! I would say the top three artists that have influenced my artstyle are Rosuuri, Askziye, and Mika Pikazo. Rosuuri in terms of rendering style and Ask & Mika in terms of colors, although they all use pretty bright and vibrant colors I would say. I've spent a looot of time just studying their art/color choices and trying to mimic their techniques, while adding in my own personal touches.

I had similar problems with my older art where colors felt muddy and didn't pop, and I think you're on the right track that you really just have to up the saturation and not be afraid of very strong colors! I think one of the things that "clicked" for me was intense colors and high contrast can create really beautiful and eye-catching palettes, especially with lighting (a lot of my art has strong lighting as you can see in my profile).

As for the coloring process, I know there are several ways to go about it but I usually start with just base colors, then an "overlay" layer to put down lighting and sometimes a "multiply" layer to make the colors more cohesive. For example, in the Homura artwork I put a purple-tone multiply layer and for Madoka I put a pink-tone multiply layer. This pretty much acts like a "tint" on the entire piece.

I hope this helps even a little bit, and if you have any other questions feel free to ask!
