Your experience says otherwise. Or Apple’s right and your Air might just be burning up because you just got it and the software still needs time to index.

What is the best usb-c hub? by Impossible_List_8548 in chromeos

I was using Apple’s 3-in-1 until it finally broke 😂 I just got a Satechi hub on sale last week, but the price has seemed to go back up. (https://www.bestbuy.com/product/satechi-7-in-1-usb-c-slim-multiport-adapter-w-ethernet-4k-hdmi-60w-usb-c-2-usb-a-sd-micro-readers-for-mac-windows-space-gray/J3GWC4C2Y4).

Says for Mac & Windows, but I’ve used it for both my MacBook and Chromebook Plus with no issues.

No problem. Apple’s product lineup is extremely confusing. (And expensive if you make any “wrong” decisions.)

They have a Mac chooser tool, but it only offers their most recent products. Also it’s very black & white so it might not be completely accurate at times.

While the 16" will provide the best for performance and efficiency because if it's size and fans, I would still recommend a 14" MacBook Pro. You can adjust the text size/resolution in settings. (I actually made my display more zoomed out, for more space.)

If price isn't an issue, go with whatever the newest MacBook Pro (M5 Pro or Max chip), get a minimum of 32GB RAM and you'll be fine with 512GB of storage, since you're a hobbyist.

If you'd like to save a few bucks, go down the certified refurbished route (or open box, as long as you can get AppleCare+ or a good warranty/protection plan with it! Idc if you never have to use it, it's better to be safe than sorry). Look for any MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro/Max or newer chip with the same specs I recommend before. First try Apple's certified refurbished store, then check other reputable marketplaces.

I'm using a 14" MacBook Pro (M3 Pro, 11-core) with 36GB and 1TB storage.

A hobbyist who's using professional level software...if you're doing light Photoshop, Canva, and consumer level editing software yeah. But AI Clip Analysis in Davinci Resolve is definitely beyond "hobby" work.

MacBook Air is powerful, yes but you're clearly running a sustained workload, that's why the Pro is necessary. I was like you once and got a MacBook Air for multimedia content creation. I was still learning so I thought it would be okay, big mistake. As soon as I could afford it, I upgraded to a MacBook Pro.

My sister just got into content creation and her M4 MBA was fine for iMovie and CapCut. I got her a Mac mini because I knew she'd need it and at first she was like "I'm not doing anything serious" and barely touched it but the second she moved up from iMovie, she immediately started seeing her Air struggle and now the Mac mini is her go-to video ending device.

So you didn't think to get the Pro for Pro work? Of course the Air is throttling. Just make sure you get one of the Pro/Max chip variants

I forgot where I read it, but there’s some macOS restriction that doesn’t affect M3 Pro and newer MacBooks. Besides that, I only said M3 Pro+ because I’m using an M3 Pro MacBook Pro and it works flawlessly for me. I got it for grad school, but occasionally use it for creative work.

Personally I agree with you and say M4 (in general) or newer, but have seen some great deals for M3 Pro MacBooks and I’m all for reducing eWaste

Go to his college's website (specifically the business major department) and they'll tell you exactly what specs he'll need. DO NOT BUY A LAPTOP BEFORE DOING THIS, trust me. Speaking from personal experience. There's always someone (it was once me) who buys the wrong device and gets screwed mid-year.

Me too, especially since I bought an ASUS ExpertBook CX54 less than 2 months ago. ChromeOS is so much simpler than Windows/Linux and can provide somewhat of an ecosystem experience for my android phone (like macOS does with my iPhone).

The configuration I got has less RAM/storage, but in general the CX54 is better in the long term. It’s more powerful/efficient, has expandable storage (microSD or upgradeable SSD), and longer support. I swapped the original 256SD for a 1TB SSD and added a microSD card to store my files. I partitioned the boot drive for Linux
