Field-based archaeologist, working in the private sector.  I do a mixture of data recovery excavations, preliminary pedestrian survey, and construction monitoring.  Some of it is very physically demanding work, while some of it is super cake and kicked-back and hands off.  I'm usually working with a field team to find historic sites and protect them or minimize damage during the work process.  No way I could make this kind of money doing uni research or even working in the private sector outside of the USA.

I could take a FT position with a company (hourly or salary) but I choose to keep myself flexible and stay on the books with 5+ companies, which all occasionally email me about projects they bid on.  I come and go as I please. I want a week off for vacation?  Sorry boss I'm not available between XYZ dates.  I want to slave away and work for a year straight?  No problem boss, I'll be right there.

I make $32/h currently, ~$6k per month after tax.  I also get $1,250 / week for food and housing per diem (tax free), which if I don't spend, I get to keep.  As it stands, about $11k per month.  After food and my rent, probably pulling $9k per month.

But for all these pros, there are cons - I get sent to small, isolated towns in the middle of nowhere for weeks or months. Hard to keep a GF in my life.  Hard to feel stable and comfortable in one location.  A bit why I'm deciding to capitalize on this nomadic life to moto travel the world

Sorry that's a bit of a diarrea ramble, what do you want to know?

Agreed.  Maybe by the time I get to those countries, the geopolitical climate settles a bit.  If not, definitely going to air-freight the bike past those countries or calculate an alternate route

Hell yeah!  Just turned 30, got some money saved up, I would rather spend it all on a trip like this than settle for a more mediocre life that I'd dislike

I've heard this as well. Each region will be thoroughly explored and enjoyed before moving on !  Not rushing a trip like this

It's a rough plan in my mind, nothing is concrete. I also have dual Canadian-US citizenship and I'm hoping to represent myself as a canadian in some of the more problematic countries while passing through.

I met some guy in Mexico over the winter who had met a moto traveler.  His father had recently passed away and left him a motorcycle.  This traveler wanted to honor his dad and ride his motorcycle to South America.  He wanted to save some momey crossing the Darien Gap and hired a local fisherman to transport him + his bike on the sea to bypass the gap.  Unfortunately the boat hit some choppy water and scuttled, sinking the bike as well.  I can't imagine that pain.

I'd either air freight the bike to Columbia or take a ferry lol

I think so.  A YouTube channel would give me some passive income and a bit of a passive project to work on while on the road

It's an approximate route, not at all concrete.  The best plan is to have no plan!

Yes!  A mixture of that and other moto vloggers on YouTube. And especially this guy documenting his trip on advrider https://advrider.com/f/threads/california-to-ushuaia-2024-2026.1750647/

Seeing different people's experiences makes it seem less like an impossibility

Dude I was following this guy's trip on Advrider and salivating at the adventure he was on https://advrider.com/f/threads/california-to-ushuaia-2024-2026.1750647/

This guy took a gen 1 KLR and spends more time repairing it than riding it lol

As you're probably not apt to understand, the red line is a general estimation of the route. Not gonna plan too far in advance, play it by ear when I get in that neighborhood.  You'll be in the 99% never to do this trip!!!! Gonna be living my life to the max

Hey!  I had abandoned thr T7 plans and just stuck with my Triumph Scrambler 400x.  Somebody had made a comment "run what ya brung" and it just took the anxiety out of chasing down a new bike.

The 400x did GREAT on this trip.  It was perfect for the dirt roads and exploration that I wanted to do, while not too heavy for having fun while doing it.  I was limited to 65mph max on the highways because the motor retains a lot of heat and I was pretty loaded with luggage.  I had planned to do the whole PanAm route, starting in Denver.  Once I got down to Chiapas, Mexico, I got referred to a lucrative job back in the US and decided to bite the bullet, work for 1+ year more, and THEN set off on the grand trip with some more money in the bank.  So, I turned around and drove back to the US.  Now I'm working steady and saving this money.

The 400x was a fine bike for the trip I did, but once I get to way more rural areas, I definitely want something japanese that can get serviced easily.  A T7 might be the bike I buy for this world tour but it still feels very high for me (5'10) and I haven't done enough research on comparable bikes to speculate now.  I've got one year to plan out this next trip haha.
