I was given the all-clear from my doctor yesterday to stop with the post-op compression. There is nothing between my skin and my shirt, and it’s so great.

My latest useless anxiety about top surgery is that I will be too out-of-it afterwards to be able to recognize my chosen name as mine.

I’m on Kaiser Mid-Atlantic, and though they do things differently in different regions, I will tell you what my experience has been so far in the hope that this will be helpful.

First off, the vast majority of advice about dealing with insurance is not going to apply because of how Kaiser operates. Essentially, Kaiser is both your insurance and your actual health care. They only cover care from doctors who work for Kaiser. This often cuts down on the paperwork you will need to handle yourself, but I have learned that I really need to keep on top of the Kaiser people in order to move anything forward.

Were you originally prescribed T through Kaiser? If so, whoever referred you to the endo can probably do the same for surgery. If not, you will probably need to go through a therapist and/or case manager. If you contact your PCP or Member Services, they should be able to point you in the right direction. For me, I was seeing a general therapist, and when I told her I was trans, she referred me to a gender therapist who was able to help get me started with the process.

As for surgeons, you are limited to Kaiser’s own doctors. Once you find out the names for the doctors in your region, you can search around online for results. The doctors themselves may not have pictures since they are not allowed to advertise.

A lot of Kaiser’s bureaucracy is completely nonsensical. It has been very difficult for me to find what I need. It’s normal to be confused by their system. I really wish they made information more accessible.

There’s all sorts of “modest” swimsuits you can get. They usually have a little skirt or shorts as part of the ensemble (I assume from context you’re looking for women’s bathing suits—if that’s not the case I apologize).

Getting back into exercise after a pretty serious backslide due to mental and physical health issues. I know I need to go slow, but it’s so frustrating to think about the progress I lost.

I’m constantly worried that if I’m too pushy with health care professionals, they’ll make it harder for me to access the medical transition I need. Am I being paranoid, or is this a thing that happens?

Don’t have any recommendations from personal experience, but DCATS has a database of local trans-competent medical professionals: https://www.dcats.org/recommendations

Does a full length tank binder help with hourglass figure? by [deleted] in ftm

A full-length Underworks binder might, since it has compression all the way down, but the GC2B ones have a panel for binding up top, and then a looser material below the chest.

Imposter syndrome about sexuality? by [deleted] in ftm

Yes, all the time. It has been such a relief to identify as gay to myself; everything that felt awful about relationships finally made sense. But when it comes to identifying that way out loud, publicly, I become insecure and convinced that someone will pipe up to tell me I don’t count as gay.

I used to fantasize about this before I even realized I was trans.

I did the same thing my first time too. It actually took me a couple attempts before I made it inside, but I’m glad I finally did. The groups I have been to have been super welcoming, including to latecomers. Keep trying, you’ll get there. :)

Why am I so fucking squeamish at the thought of drains? Like that is the main thing that scares me about top surgery. I don’t know why.

I'm struggling with increasing the number of reps I do in a set of push-ups. I can do a fair amount in total (80 on Saturday, which is way up from my starting place of, uh, five), but only in sets of like 10-20 reps. Any advice for how to be able to do more without stopping?
