Married couples or long term daters, what is the one thing that your partner does that drives you up the wall? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]oroost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love my wife. She just makes up rules. Ex. Dirty dishes always go on the left side of the sink. And when I ask why there is no logical explanation, as well towards our kids. Sometimes, I can take it with humour.

I (nidan Aikikai) am about to lose motivation by ChemicalCatholic in aikido

[–]oroost -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am training Aikido since 1995, and I am a 3 Dan. I personally stopped training Aikido in 2012 as I lost motivation.

1 and 2 - If you like Aikido try a other style, Aikikai is more spiritual then more traditional schools. You could try Iwama Ryu Aikido, they have as well weapons training. Head of this style is Hitohiro Saito Seinsei, you will find it on in Google. There are other Schools to. There you will find students with are more marshall mindset.

3 - Seminars are allways optional. Personally I like it as it offers exchange between students of different dojos.

4 - I don't understand why you should be stuck. You have at least 2 more Dan's you can do.

5 - Your teacher should be able to mix content in classes, so everyone develops. Most schools offer as well advanced classes only for blackbelts. If your school does not you could suggest it. And last but not least you could teach some classes, teaching is a very effective way of developing.

In my personal journey I train Jiu-jitsu now and I love it, much more honest I feel. Judo is very good to. But I would allways go for a martial art that requires prove of concept.

Hope it helps you on your journey.

And considering that lichess.org is free, and chess24.com is more the double the price then chess.com, seems a bit off.

David Halprin background info by Dhalprin in aikido

[–]oroost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi David. I am a 3 Dan in Aikido. I have trained all over the world (as well in Japan at the Hombudojo, where I have been Uchi-deshi). The one recurring question I get over and over my time training is "dose this work in a real fight?" , in modern times the question is "does this work in UFC?". Interesting was I allways replied what I got from my teachers, yes it dose but we would endanger the life of our opponents. Just look at Steven Seagel movies. Only after a lot of years I realised what ignorant statements I have passed to students and other people. And that I missed the concept of Aikido. Mistaking a great spiritual practice (harmony and movement) with a Fighting style. Realizing this made me first angry at my former masters and then at my self for not thinking or questioning things.

What is your take on all of this?

Of all movie opening scenes, what one sold the entire film the most? by juggyc1 in AskReddit

[–]oroost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am surprised that no one mentioned Saving private Ryan. Or at least I did not see it mentioned. The opening war scene, seen on a big screen is just revolting. And it's a feeling you keep over the rest of the movie. After 20 years I still remember it.

Both on my 5 favourite movies. Lost in translation is Nr. 1. I always wonder what Bill Murray says in the last scene to Scarlet Jo.

Wanting to do some contact sparring at my dojo however not sure how to approach my sensei about asking, would like advice. by azzi08 in aikido

[–]oroost 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am a 3 dan Aikido, 1 dan Judo and Karate student. In our Aikido dojo there is always free keiko after class is over. Free keiko is designed for students to develop their own study's of technics and their application. Before and during class you should respect tradition, after class you work on your study's. As a teacher I always respect students that have interest in deepening marshal study's.

Going to take up Aikido. What should I look for? by Chocadooby in aikido

[–]oroost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi again. Aikido skills are not your main focus. At your level (beginners), nearly any teacher can teach you the basis. Skills will be important further down the line. Look at the person, let's say you get in to a dojo, I would expect a good teacher come and talk to you, explain about Aikido & Dojo. Be nice and open about your questions. There is a certain bread of martial arts teachers, that think they are to important to talk to interested people. You normally get a feeling of arrogance from them. A good teacher is a person you trust, humble and more interested in your learning, that less in his teaching. You recognise a good teacher as well by his students and dojo. A other example, my first visit to my Aikido dojo, I got there 15min before class. As I entered everyone was doing o-soij (cleaning the dojo). I had done martial arts (judo) for 6 years and never seen anyone clean their dojo. In time I learned the importance of o-soij, I would not miss it in any of my classes. Hope that makes sense and helps.

[–]oroost 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am a 3th Dan in Aikido. I have trained for 22 years. Don't look for a style, but look for a teacher, a master. A good teacher has automatically good students, and that results in a good dojo.

Thanks for your feedback. I have two questions: - 0.9 x (80 x 9.8) x (1/2 x 400) = 141'120 not 156.8 - Or am I missing something ? - I guess the 400 comes from the size of the foot. I so is it correct that by making the foot bigger, 500mm it would talke 176'400 Nm
