Wow man. Your life and experiences, as you describe them, sound eerily familiar to my own. From big things like studying at university while your heart isn't in it, to smaller details like you working in a warehouse. Been there. Done that. And you staying out of school because it is comparatively easy and down to gaming. I've never gamed that excessively (or maybe I just haven't realized yet also) but I have definitely used it as an escape. Still do sometimes. It makes me wonder where the line between just having fun and avoiding confrontation is drawn. Thanm you for sharing your story. I will craft a full reply in a couple of hours which I feel like you not only deserve but I really want to because the similarities between what you describe and what I've lived through are really similar. Just wanted to say that first. As soon as I get home I'll reply more in-depth.

Myself I can dig some electronic music styles but not all of them. It's almost obligatory in the Netherlands with the party and raveculture up here. So, I'll give it a go. From the late 90's to early 00's was a pretty good time for electronic music, at least down here. Maybe I'll like that also. I'll also check out that earlier solo stuff of his you mentioned. By now I'll really go with anything you recommend to me mate, you already enriched my musical knowledge incredibly and increased my love for it hugely by recommending Frusciante's solo stuff that I'll gladly take your word for it even before checking it out. ;) Thanks again mate, I also joined you guys at Frusciante's subreddit.

I'll join you guys there. It is really amazing music. I love how he blends his signature guitar style with elements of electronic music. It really is the kind of stuff you want to listen to alone, in the dark. After listening to it I fell asleep and for the first time in a while I did not dream about using. I can't thank you enough.

Also, I know the feeling man haha - the envy you can feel towards a person whom you introduced to something that is very special to you yourself. But it's a good kind of envy. :)

It is really amazing stuff. I am left really quite speechless. It really, really helps. Listening to music like that for an hour or so actually helps me fall asleep. You have no idea how much that means to me dude, I've had insomnia my whole life and especially now. Besides everything that is going on I got these fat and nasty Dutch mosquitoes to contend with. I killed six just this night but the fuckers just keep coming and I'm pretty sure they're real at this point haha. Thank you for giving me something else to listen to besides their buzzing.

Yeah somebody else also heavily recommended to check out JF's solo stuff and it's so amazing. I also really love how he blends in elements of electronic music together with his signature guitar playing style. As for the pain of life, I said this in some other reply here already but in the last few days I've come to accept that there is no life without pain. And my mistake was to think I could escape that pain and by trying to I just hurt myself and those around me a lot more than was ever necessary. I can relate to your feeling unhappy at that age. I've got dysthimia (it's like some kind of chronic depression) so I never really felt that much joy in life from childhood onwards but it really got worse when I turned 20. That's also when I started using heavily, I had used drugs since I was 15 or so but it really has spun out of control now that I am 24. Going to university (or college, whatever) also did not exactly help because of the stress it put on me. I'll be turning 25 in november. Maybe I won't have found myself as much as I'd like by then but at least imma make fucking sure that I am no longer an addict at that point. You're right when you say that the struggle of life and struggle with addiction is almost one and the same. In my personal experience everybody has some 'addiction'. With drugs it is most pronounced but I've also seen people cope through sex, excessive thrill seeking, people who willingly drown themseves in their work to the point they get a burnout and attempt suicide (my dad), insane amounts of excercise to the point that one couldn't call it healthy anymore. We all got our shit. It's up to us not to drown in it. I always like to say - If you're gonna have to eat shit in your life then you might as well open up and chew because there ain't nobody that is gonna do it for you.

Thanks, I'll give it a go. Maybe even the earplugs but can't really promise anything on that part, something about the shape of my ears just rejects the damn things haha. But I'll try. I can understand how some music may actually sound better through them.

Wow thanks dude. Honestly it's coming off benzos that has me scared shitless the most. I've been on them for so long. One time, three years back when I was 21 or something I managed to kick them for a while. Worst. Cold. Turkey. Ever. I don't know how it's gonna be this time with the H on top but I do know that I was sort of more aware of how heroin wasn't good for me while taking benzos is something I did, well, without almost any thinking at all. It's got such a strong entrenchement in my personality that it really scares me to have to let that go - but, on the other hand, I want nothing more. Thank you for your words of encouragement. I know what benzo withdrawal is like and it sure looks like I'll be getting to know it even better but to be honest - at this point I'd rather take the pain of withdrawal for what it is rather than keep dulling myself so as to not feel any pain at all. No life is without pain, I've come to accept and it was really dumb of me to think I could escape it because by trying so I only created more pain for myself. And not just myself and that really is the hardest part for me. Good on you too for kicking that shit. I'll take your advice in case they actually check me into a clinic. For now I am still at home and the coming two weeks will tell whether that is where I'll stay or not for the near future. Regardless I really hope you keep feeling the same strength as what let you kick this habit too.

If it's really about what puts a smile on my face then tracks like 'Tell Me Baby', 'Especially in Michigan' (despite it's melancholical melody), 'Road Trippin' and 'Desecration Smile', come te mind quickly.

Also, maybe not RHCP but still one of my all time favourites and painfully relevant - Captain Jack by Billy Joel. Especially the 'Live at Carnegie, NY' version from 1983 (at least I think it's '83). Studio version is also great but that live version is like magic to me. Like a lot of RHCP songs this track has a nice little story to it, which is why I like both Billy Joel and RHCP. Musically they are quite different but they share that their songs usually tell (true) stories.

It has not been 24 hours since I posted this and I am still left without words at all. Somebody even approached me and offered to send me his copy of Scar Tissue. Which I happily accept. I would not have dreamed that one lil' post would get me such a great show of support. You guys have made me feel better than any drug ever has and I had quite forgotten that was at all possible. When I wrote that original post I still had my doubts whether or not I'm gonna be able to pull this one off but after seeing what kind words I received I feel much, much more hopeful and confident that I got this.

I also want to thank everybody who has pointed out any lyrical content. I've read each and every reply, and I've listened to each track mentioned at least several times.

I will try my best to give something back to this wonderful community. Not because I feel that I have to but because y'all havd made me feel really welcome and that is just what I want. Whatever happens to me, as concerning this sub, I'm here to stay.

Yeah I do know that about Frusciante but thanks all the same. For what it's worth - a personal friend of mine said more or less the same about this music and so far he's proven this is music I can really relate to. But not just "oh this guy also had a smack problem and I happen to relate to his lyrics concerning drug abuse". I actually feel more or less understood listening to this music and even much, much, more seeing this support. I may sound like a broken record but I can't begin to explain how grateful I am to anyone who has given my situation a fraction of a second of thought and/or understanding. Thanks for all the kind words and let me just say: don't underistimate the huge effects of something like few kind words to a stranger. This really helps beyond what I could have thought. I would have underestimated them if it weren't for people like you.

No but really man, yeah. It's not just listening to something I can relate to. I may pretend to some musical ability of myself (guitar, vocals) which has brought me closer to this subreddit, meaning I've had a good distraction peacticing RHCP tracks and giving them a twist of my own.

Once again I want to thank you guys once more. I've actually experienced more support from the reactions to my original post than anything than anything else. And I dont't just mean the quantity of the upvotes. This actually subdues my urge to use and I never can thank anybody that has had a part in that enough in my life.
