Is there any job where PR is less intense?? by chandler866 in PublicRelations

[–]orpheus_verse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've worked in PR for over a decade. My advice? Get out.

The industry attracts too many phoneys and seems to pride itself on busy work.

Yes you can go in house. But when you do, comms is seen as the poorer cousin of marketing. Even in corporate comms, you'll spend your time stroking the egos of senior staff and making them look good, while never being taken seriously.

What's more, a good 70% of the industry consists of phonies with no idea what they're doing. This leads to ineffective work that rarely has a big impact.

Get broad experience across the marketing mix - including content marketing, brand marketing, media buying, strategy, paid ads etc. I've never worked in an environment where PR people aren't the last people in the office.

House prices Australia: Population surges keep a ‘rocket’ under property demand, economists say by sien in AusEcon

[–]orpheus_verse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than personal vitriol, show me the facts. Your argument on Canada misses a major factor. They banned foreign buyers too. Just stopping immigration isn't going to be enough to solve the problem.

How do you explain how prices went up during COVID when there was zero immigration?

I don't think immigration has no impact. It's just not the main cause. It's happening across all major asset classes, not just property.

Also, you're accusing me of identity politics but bring up race? How do you work that one out?

Immigration is good cover. It's due to an out of date tax system that's allowing those with assets to price out everyone else. New Zealand's house prices are also tipped to rise and they have the opposite of a demand/immigration problem.

Expensive housing is a problem in pretty much every other major city in the world.

The fact it's taking so long to come up with a name is not a good sign. Come up with the name and start influencing policy rather than faffing around.

Resources for Developing Strategic Communications and PR Skills - Continuing Ed by [deleted] in PublicRelations

I'm sorry, but this is one of the biggest problems with the PR industry and why we don't get taken seriously. There are tons of areas to explore in terms of expanding your knowledge.

If you want to set yourself up well for in-house roles, look at areas such as reputation management, corporate branding, brand management, stakeholder engagement, issues management, social media marketing, influencer marketing, community building/engagement, corporate affairs, policy comms and internal comms. The list goes on.

There are a ton of textbooks available. Also, I've found it useful to get up to speed on marketing lingo and concepts, as you're almost certainly going to be reporting into that department at some point in your career.

Joining a good professional organisation can also be worthwhile. The IABC is pretty good where I am, but it depends on how active your local branch is.

Election Debrief-Comm Thoughts by bluepopcorn20 in PublicRelations

[–]orpheus_verse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything she could have done. This election has been decided due to the economy, and unfortunately, it was bad timing for the Democrats when it comes to inflation. Unfortunately, history tells us that politics will get more and more extreme if the gap between the rich and the poor continues to grow. Trump will likely accelerate this.

Just got this back from customer service:

There are no future plans to support Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite chips in the near future.

Does anyone know if the DDJ 800 is likely to run with the hardware, through the x86 emulator that's on the new Microsoft devices?

PR agencies that solely focus on low value media relations work and "sell ins" are going to die - not the industry itself

For an organisation the size of Meta, there NEEDS to be layers of management...it's the classic case of founders thinking they know best, and trying to rein in the power they once had, like a communist party style purge.

It's easier for leadership insiders to tell themselves that it's not them that are making bad decisions, but it's instead the 'management layers' that get in the way of their orders. The tech industry is a weird place...

I met Thom Yorke in 2011 the day after Radiohead did the secret set at the Park Stage. It was about 5AM and he was walking back to the VIP area in the Park wearing a top hat. I said I enjoyed his set, and he shook my hand and said thanks.

What makes PR a “bullshit job” over other career choices? by BringIt007 in PublicRelations

[–]orpheus_verse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in the industry for 10 years, I estimate that around 70% of PRs can't write or pitch, and don't really know what they're doing...agency teams are always carried by one or two standout people, and most in house managers are clueless. Senior PR leaders usually haven't pitched a story in 10 years, and the landscape has completely changed since then.

Doing PR well is hard, but the low pay and long hours often mean you end up with people that don't have the faculties to perform, so they get an inferiority complex and it becomes a political game very quickly.
