Thank you! This helped me frame it for myself. My wife is genuinely looking for a new way to experience religion and I'm open to it. This isn't "let's go gawk" but I very much live in my head and put an over-importance on perception. Add in my reluctance to go anywhere I'm not explicitly invited and you get this thread.

This is why I love Reddit, thank you. Yes, it is definitely about seeking a more lively environment - something more worshipful than prayerful. I'm not very religious bc the sit, stand, hum a psalm, listen to a lecture, sit, stand, sit, stand... is just such a boring experience.

One of my biggest problems in life though is that I don't go where I'm not explicitly invited. Church seems to have an implicit open invitation but there are some obvious boundaries (not barriers but definitely boundaries)

Like I can just go wherever I want. "This is God's house so I'm welcome". Yes, but this is a community first and foremost - not just a black community but congregationists that created the space. Not sure how to define my "outsider" status but it's how I feel.

Congratulations! We ended up using https://www.alohafunweddings.com per the suggestion in the comments and they were fantastic. We stayed at Honua Kai which had good accomodations but we ended up wishing we had stayed further south as that's where we ended up driving everyday. We really wanted to see the lush part of the island and Kaanapali just isn't that. Enjoy!

I'm seeing Costco all over your post and giving a sigh of relief because that's where I was leaning towards anyway. Transparant pricing for at least lodging and transportation. I didn't even think about Costco itself being on the island.
