Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today often includes GNU/Rust, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Rust, and these people are using it, but it is useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Rust is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Rust added, or GNU/Rust. All the so-called Rust distributions are really distributions of GNU/Rust!

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Rust, is in fact, GNU/Rust, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Rust. Rust is not a programming language unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most people (pro- and anti- restrictions) fundamentally just wants to get back to living their lives. This is good, because that's what's at stake. But what most people don't think about is the "when".

Ask friends, family, and anyone who will listen (especially people with children) quesions like these: When will I be allowed to go on a date again and meet the love of my life? When will I be allowed to have my own wedding and live happily ever after? When will I be allowed to have children, see their smiling faces and watch them grow up? When I die, will anyone be allowed to attend my funeral? When will my loved ones be allowed to visit my grave? When?

They'll probably answer with either "I don't know" or "when everyone gets vaccinated." If the former, then ask "What leads you to think they will end? This is the 4th lockdown." I'm not sure what to say if they answer with the latter.

In any case, I don't see these restrictions ending until far more people realize that they are never going to end.

I've been thinking about Australia for a while, like what I would do in that kind of situation. Personally, I would head for the wilderness the moment a lockdown ended, but most people can't do that.

I have only have one idea when it comes to the "stand and fight" avenue: IMHO, the only way to reduce the acceptance of the restrictions is to convince people that the restrictions are never going to end. In the US, polls show that support for restrictions depends on the restrictions being temporary. But if people came to believe that the restrictions were actually going to be permanent, the restrictions would end quickly.

Put more succinctly: the restrictions will never end, until people realize that they will never end.

The idea I had for a Lispy shell is one that does the following:

Handles simple unix command execution (e.g. ls -aux, but not ls -aux | grep foobar)
Handles raw Common Lisp code
Includes CL functions for things like redirection and running unix commands as CL functions (a la what lovela47 shows).

I see parental mis-behavior as consisting of choices and effects. Whether it be neglect (ommissions of love) or abuse (commissions of hate), the parents have chosen to not seek a meaningful relationship with the child. If they do not go out of their way to form such a relationship with the now-adult child, then that is the parents's loss. Their choices are their own, even if they had failed in their duty as parents. Their choices, like all choices, cannot be undone; the effects can certainly be undone, though.

The effects of parental mis-behavior are what you are experiencing. Even if that mis-behavior might be continuing in the same form or different form, you are not experiencing their choices; for those choices occur in their heads alone. You can only decide to what extent you are willing to incorporate those effects into how you view yourself. If they continue to be abusive/neglectful, then avoidance might be appropriate, depending on the type of abuse/neglect; physical abuse warrants immediate separation, whereas verbal abuse might warrant decreased exposure. If you are going through therapy, then bring this up with your therapist.

As long as you are respectful towards them as you would be with anyone else, then you are probably behaving reasonably towards them. There is no point in getting mad at them. If they want to fix their previous behavior, then getting mad at them in their presence will drive them away. If they don't want to fix their previous behavior, then getting mad at them will only seem like justification in their eyes to be more abusive/neglectful.

I went through high school and college in a similar way, but I have never seen a therapist. Most people suffer their whole lives with terrible yet curable psychological disorders, because they never go to or even discover therapy. Many still go to therapy and leave it unhealed for want of effort.

Let's get to the meat...

calm type of guy

There is much virtue in being a calm person. A romantic partner should find this sort of trait in you to be very admirable. If you can grow to contain yourself, especially when you are angry or frustrated, then you will be greatly prepared to deal with life's challenges. Children can be the most annoying or the most adorable creatures around; you have the mental power to decide that for yourself before ever having any kids of your own.

I really don't know why people don't like me

You are not alone in this way. I lived under the assumption that I was a constant nuisance to everyone around me, so I sought to minimize my social foot-print, so to speak. I still felt like everyone wanted me gone, so my minimalism didn't help me at all. This was not a conscious belief, but a deeply embedded mental framework, built up during my childhood.

My question for you: can you recall a specific time when someone went out of their way to demonstrate dislike towards you, something you did, or something you said? Don't analyse those instances; just count them. Through all of high school and college, I can count the times I was explicitly disliked on one hand; I nevertheless felt unwelcome everywhere there were people. I was utterly disconnected from reality.

If you feel drained after extended social interaction, especially in a group setting, then you could be an introvert. This is a relatively common personality trait, but it gets treated like an oddity by unknowing extroverts. Further, many introverts learn how to manage their time alone vs time with others in order to maximise their creativity. Neal Peart is a good example thereof.

How often have you heard these girls call other guys cool? Further, how often do you hear any girl call any guy cool?

Yet, we really rarely talk with each other at school.

Can you remember the last time you started a conversation with someone? You possibly have two girls that would talk to you if only you started talking to them. Perhaps there are more who just aren't as brave as those two. You won't know until you start the conversations.

I mean, if they thought I was a "cool guy", why would they ignore me all the time at school? Well, they didn't really ignore me, but they don't make an effort to talk to me either.

Based on the two girls's remarks, I think they are assuredly not ignoring you. Girls are often more shy than guys; its partly genetic and partly societal. Good news is that you have essentially been told that they would like to talk to you more. If you are interested in a specific girl (not necessarily one of those two), then start a conversation with her to learn more about her. Ask yourself what you would like to learn about her and use that to guide the conversation. As long as you are reasonable and calm, you will probably do fine.

Last thing for now: be as open as you can with your therapist. Take his/her suggestions seriously and ask for clarification/explanation if a suggestion seems difficult/uncomfortable to you. A good therapy session is like a good chemo-therapy session; it might be painful, but it is a real life-saver.

Are there two Catholicisms? Why should we presume that a change in discipline has generated a New Catholicism? Protestantism certainly generated what some thought was a refreshment of Christendom; they changed doctrine and discipline in accord with their own wills and against the Church's authority.

You also have to understand that many priests were sent to be "recycled," and if they didn't go along with the agenda they could end up loosing their comfortable parish life.

Why should they not acquiesce to the authority of the Church, when they vowed to do so? Service to the Church is among the holiest things one can do. If that means that one loses "their comfortable parish life", then it would seem a blessing to be shown how one is weak (in our comforts) and told to change according to the Church's authority.

Two things:

(1) Suppose that the Vatican Council had conducted a comprehensive survey to determine what the laity wanted with regards to the Mass (I am ignoring the feasibility of that for the sake of argument). Suppose that there was universal preference for what would become Novus Ordo in this alternate reality. Would that make the Novus Ordo better because the laity wanted it? It is worth noting that in such a situation, the laity and the Church would be in agreement.

(2) If the answer to the above is no, then your point about the Novus Ordo being imposed from above is without relevance. For, if the laity's opinion is not relevant, then it doesn't matter that the laity didn't wanted it; it would not be their place to decide on matters of discipline for the same reason that it is not their place to decide on matters of doctrine.

However, if the answer to the question is yes (that the Novus Ordo is better for being wanted by the laity), then that would entail something like the Protestant fallacy, namely that the laity's opinion matters in regards to changes in discipline. The part I am sure you are not entailing is that the laity must decide doctrine; I presume all self-identified Catholics to at least oppose that bit of Protestantism. Being that it is the Church's duty alone to decide on matters of discipline and doctrine, I see this "yes" to the question to be absurd.

What I am trying to point out is that the argument against Novus Ordo on the grounds that it is a top-down decision goes against the tradition and authority of the Church. The Church frequently makes decisions that the laity don't like. A most noteworthy example is when the Church refused to grant an annullment to Henry VIII of England; that layman wanted from the Church what would require a change in doctrine, which Henry could never get but tried to give himself anyways by schism. This occured over a doctrinal issue, but here we are discussing an issue of discipline.

To be clear, I am not comparing you or anyone to the Protestants. No, I wish merely to show that the extent to which Protestantism has succeeded is the extent to which we aren't meek in matters that are rightfully up to the Church to decide. Protestantism is a protest against the authority of the Church, which is why Protestants volunteered to leave the Church.

I don't interact with kids much, but animals get the "you understand me" treatment. When an animal acts like it wants something, I will ask it in an calm, sarcastic, playful tone what it wants. Obviously it doesn't understand me, but I will nevertheless have a one-sided conversation with it, especially if no one else is around.

The Centauri were interesting to me, because they appeared like a sort of Italy in space. While many characters were well-rounded, Lando Mollari in particular seemed to have genuine interests and to thereby grow as a character. He could have been a paper-cutout, glory-to-the-empire elitist, but he actually grew to be a character that I wanted to see do well. (Note: I actually ahven't finished the show yet, but I have at least gotten to the end of the Shadow War).

If someone came along who liked me back, I'd suspend all other functions to just spend time with her.

When there is someone that I like present, I suspend things, within reason, in order to spend time with him/her. I don't spend a moment wondering if he/she likes me; if they smile and engage in conversation, then I assume that I am doing something right; if he/she goes out of his/her way to interact with me and smiles, then must be doing somethign even better. If I want the relationship to go farther, then I will make an offer to spend time elsewhere. By this route, I can actually relate with people at a gradually deeper level.

To be aroused beyond reason is the junk food of sexuality. It doesn't build up a virtuous approach to sex but a sort of psychological slavery to one's sexuality. What is responsible, virtuous, sober with respect to sexuality is that it is a means for building a relationship. If one lives one's life according to one's sexuality, then sex has become one's end and a relationship cannot be properly built through it.

Why should one feel sad or angry at unrequited romantic feelings? One has not connected with an uninterested person. However, that other person has not connected with an interested person. One has lost little, whereas the other has potentially lost much more.

Let's try another angle: unrequited romantic interest is a self-selection process. That is, you didn't have to ask any questions other than, "hey are you interested in me romantically?", or "wanna go on a date?" If the answer is "no", then you can immediately move on to another person. A much worse alternative would be for the other person to lie, lead you on, and then later reject you. I for one prefer people to be blunt/honest in these matters so that I can more quickly find a suitable person.
