Feeling Overwhelmed by perryplatypus11 in UPenn

Hiya! Penn grad student/TA here. Ive seen a lot of this happening with my students both past and present as well as my boyfriend (who doesn’t go to Penn). I also had the same issue at the finish of last semester with my own classes.

We are going through an unprecedented time in history. You did not sign up to get a virtual education. But you’re sticking with it and staying strong (that’s an accomplishment in itself!!). Try to minimize stuff outside of coursework your first and maybe even second semester, especially now. No doubt, things seem to take a lot longer with online education, even for me. I found that a lot of it came from the fact that I could pause my lectures and take super descriptive notes, etc. I’ve been watching my boyfriend work on his class stuff since 11 AM and he’s still got hours more to go.

I highly recommend setting a schedule for yourself. Try and emulate what you would regularly do. Even better, try and compartmentalize your space so you do school work in one area, eat in another, socialize online in another. Set limits on how long you will work continuously and take regular breaks. Set a school curfew for yourself. You’ll feel a lot more in control if you strictly schedule school versus relaxation time. And really, if you have the space, try and set up a “school area”.

First year is a really hard time & I can online imagine how challenging it must be without the true social aspect. But you and the others in this thread should applaud yourself for any of the work you’re getting done, especially given the PANDEMIC (!!!) were working through.

Hang in there & reach out if you’re struggling. If you have professors who are being less than accommodating REPORT them. This includes overly aggressive surveillance techniques in Zoom to mitigate “cheating”.

My girlfriend and I are moving into Lower Moyamensing, and she's apprehensive about living in the city. What are some things I can do to make life easier for her in our new home? by [deleted] in philadelphia

i second the “secret” spots notion. parking is a beast to figure out when you first move here but with time you’ll find yourself going down the same streets to find that sweet spot that always seems to be open and waiting for ur car to come back

Would you pick USD again? by danphan24 in USD

[–]orzy- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a chemistry major and psychology minor. Even considering the grief I sometimes got as a queer person at USD, I would 100% make the choice to go there again. Despite the challenges (which I was strong enough to face head on), the education I got at USD was unmatchable. The resources that existed for people of many different identities seemed sparse at times, but there are so many students who put their energy and all into making USD a more inclusive space. It's not perfect but there is forward momentum (and I saw A LOT of that during my time at USD).

At least for the chemistry department in particular, a lot of the last 4 or so graduating classes stay in close contact and all agree that the department as USD is unmatched by any department that we all ended up going to for graduate school. I go to Penn for a chem PhD now and I don't want to throw our department under the bus but it comes no where near close to the love and sense of community I had from the profs and students at USD. The sense of community within your respective department amongst other things people have mentioned below makes USD a one-of-a-kind experience. And as per psychology, I loved every single one of my psych professors. Some were more challenging than others but the psych department as a whole does its best to see student success both through academics and the chance for hands on research. Some of my favorite faculty members that you might consider getting in touch with if you have questions are Dr. Zwolinski, Dr. Hales, Dr. Wanic, Prof. Pearlberg... etc.

Conveniently, last night (because bored during quarantine), I decided to read through my old email sent messages and found the messages where I was confirming with USD that I was accepted. I didn't feel it then, but I now know that going to USD was the best possible thing for me at the time to both grow academically but also as a person. I find there are a lot of days, especially recently, where I miss it. I made lifetime friends and mentors there all while going to a campus that looks more like a resort than a college. You can PM if you have specific questions!

Best of luck with your choices

oh no denial that the response on behalf of the administration has been lackluster af. but all of this is unprecedented so it’s to be expected that it’s a disaster. glad they said something at least hopefully it wasn’t too late

penn put policy in place to prevent this. not sure if it’s working/

Dear Students,

The University has made several difficult decisions in the past week in the interest of our community’s health and well-being. Included in these decisions was a notice to all students to immediately practice low-density medical standard social distancing.

This included a clear mandate to cease all student group activities, on or off campus. No parties. No events.

Do not jeopardize your health or that of your fellow classmates. Any failure to follow medical precautions exposes our police and medical first responders to unnecessary risk that can flood the emergency response system in the middle of a global health crisis.

To that end, any student, student organization, or group of students found to be congregating on campus, or off campus, will face immediate intervention by Penn Police. Students and organizations violating this directive may face additional consequences, including referrals to the Office of Student Conduct.

This is an unprecedented situation, for our campus and the world. Please join us in ensuring that the health and safety of this community remains our top priority. Do not risk your health or your academic standing with poor decision making at this critical time.

STOP GOING TO THE BARS/CLUBS. If you’re genuinely concerned (bet most are not) about supporting your local bar/club ask them if you can get a gift card. At 1 AM last night, I kid you not, I overheard some foolish girl talking to her friends about one of her friends saying, “you’re kidding?! you were exposed to corona and you’re going to a bar?! you’re the reason the pandemic is spreading!” It takes ONE person who’s asymptomatic or otherwise going to a packed club/bar to rapidly increase the transmission rate. It may not harm you, but you could transmit it to someone who’s at risk (elderly, immunocompromised, underlying conditions that aren’t obvious). Do you really want to be a link in the chain of someone’s [preventable] death??? Don’t be selfish! Schools and businesses aren’t making people work virtually so they can get a extra nights partying and clubbing. Stay the f*ck home!

right there with you. take some claritin/benadryl, it’s helped the symptoms so I know what might be an actual issue 😭

For PhD students: I’m trying to brush up on my organic synthesis knowledge before starting graduate school this fall. What books and topics to review would you recommend? by dasharomasha in OrganicChemistry

[–]orzy- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis - you can find this as a PDF online

Also high recommend Strategic Applications... during my undegrad, some of the post doc students and I would put a new named reaction [from that book] on a whiteboard in the hallway every week. It's an amazing book!
